Hi all,
I know this question may sound out of place but I guess this is the best place to find graduated physicians. I was wondering does the osteopathic diploma specifically state: Osteopathic medicine and surgery? I need to know for international lisensure in (Jordan) which I was informed that a valid medical degree to practice over there has to have the word surgery on it! I don't know why are they so technical but I guess because they aren't familiar with osteopathic medicine in the US.

Thank you for your time!

DO's are not common outside the US, although I heard that Germany and UK may have some licensed DO's there..not sure. This isn't a slight against DO's, but DO is a US thing, and the rest of the world does not know much about it. I would verify carefully the guidelines of your country you want to practice to make sure you will qualify. GL

It doesn't say it on a M.D. degree either.

I'm not sure how you'd be valid in Jordan????

Why the hell would you want to practice in Jordan if you're educated in the US? They should be lucky to get a US trained physician. Most DO degrees read: DOCTOR OF OSTEOPATHY or DOCTOR OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE just like most MD degrees read DOCTOR OF MEDICINE. You never see the word surgery anywhere on the diploma.

I think when you get a license it says licensed to practice medicine and surgery, but a diploma just states the degree you've earned ("Doctor of Medicine").

I think this confusion lies in the fact that pretty much everywhere in the world outside of the US and some countires in euroupe. Everyone else follows the british system of medical education and their graduates from medical school recieve the british degree MBBS (bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery) which is the exact same as an allopathic MD degree from the US.

These countries for the most part do not accept osteopaths because in the UK and pretty much all commonwealth countries osteopath education is more akin to chiropractic and they are not allowed to practice "medicine and surgery".
