So Dr. Mom dropped a bomb in the "interviews" thread about the AOA getting stricter this year and denying people with osteopathic programs within 100 miles internship approval. It just so happens that most places I am applying to have osteopathic programs well within that limit. Anyone else have experience with this? Especially current interns? Someone brought up the question of doing residency in the famous 5... Penn and Fla have DO programs nearby (not sure of mileage) would it be better not to have applied since there will likely not be approval?
Thanks,
A

I guess it all depends on whether you want to work in those 5 states or not. Many people don't care about this because there are plenty of other places to live and work.

Also, keep in mind that this approval process is very much in flux. The previous year or so nearly every application was approved. This year it changed, but there may be some moderation between those two endpoints. Also, I'm not convinced that the 90-100 mile deal is set in stone. Just be ready to explain why you went to the program that you did rather than an Osteo one. FYI: my info came from the AOA House of Delegate meetings last July. I received the same information from multiple people involved in some way in the internship approval process.

My way of working around all of this (since I'm from one of the 5 states) is that I'm applying to one Osteo program. If I don't match Osteo, then I have applications in at a number of ACGME programs that aren't near any Osteo programs. Not ideal, but do-able.

DrMom would be more inthe know than I... I got my internship approved two years ago... one of our current PGY-2s got hers approved last year... and we dno't have any DOs in our intern year.

It was easy peasy for me to get approved as well as the other resident.

Just give as many reasons why you applied MD and see what sticks.
