OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

OOS, got an interview for Nov 3rd.

Phlame is the 6k for books/supplies a real number? OSU seems to have the highest cost for books and supplies out of all the schools I've looked at so far, 15k over 4 years.

vast majority of the books are optional when you get down to it.

The 6k for first semester includes money for a laptop, your 2nd semester equipment (stethascope, otoscope, etc), and then books too. First semester, the only books you need are the Histology (required in lab for use as an atlas, otherwise you are kicked out), Biochem if you want it (one of the biochem professors tests 1-2 questions out of reading assignments), and then a few Atlasses for anatomy (ie netters, rohens, some embryology books).

All in all, I spent about $200 on books this semester.

ALSO, don't buy books too early! Some 2nd year mentors will pass their books on to you (but in my case, mine didn't pass on jack...).

Idaho...spent some time in the Air Force and have fond memories of Oklahoma.

Sounds good, were you stationed at Tinker? Also what days did they offer you for your interview.

I have an interview too! OOS as well..

November 5th!

Hey guys, long time no see. Got my application in early (june) this time instead of february. I also got a lot of volunteer hours and finished my MPH. Didn't make the final waitlist cut last time. I hope I do better this time!

Best of luck, let me know if you have any questions or how things go for you!

My stats may not be competitive. 29Q and a 3.4 combined undegrad/masters gpa. Do you know if OSU favors reapplicants in any way?

If you don't mind me asking, what was your science GPA?

My legal residence is New Jersey, but I've been in school in Colorado for the past 3 1/2 years

Sounds good, seems like there is a lot of OOS in the first couple rounds this year. Congrats again.

They look highly upon re-apps that show progress, ie improved GPA, More advanced classes, finishing degree, shadowing / job experience, whatnot. Just need to show improvement and the desire that you truly want in.

I finished my MPH with a 3.76 and volunteered 160 hours at my local health dept. Good?

Stationed at Sheppard in Texas but OKC was the playground of choice on the weekends

How many interviewers per interviewee?
1 to 1? 2 to 1? 3 to 1?

Congrats Denco!

Would you mind sharing your stats? Thanks.

cGPA: 3.5
sGPA: 3.65
MCAT: 28S

I have a lot of research hours, volunteer activities, and I am also a student-athlete. I would say something that helps me out a lot is that I had some special circumstances my first year and a half of school and since then my GPA has been pretty close to a 4.0. I'm not sure if that helps or not!

They look at everything, as in the WHOLE applicant profile to make a decision. The exact method is not known (to me) but after talking with applicants that were in my groups and other groups around mine, we had wide test score range, wide gpa range, but everyone was balanced by level of degree, activity, etc.

good luck to everyone interviewing! let us know how it goes!

Ok, here's my stats.

Undergrad GPA 3.2 Microbiology
Grad GPA 3.76 Master Publich Health
Combined GPA about 3.4
Science 3.2
MCAT 29q in 2007, 28n in 2008
Reapplicant, interviewed and pre-cut waitlisted

Changes since last cycle:

160 volunteer hours at health dept
Became a registered environmental health specialist
Job as health inspector
Finished MPH

Do you think I have decent chances? I really want to go to OSU, Its my first choice.

are you in state or out of state?

In state. I actually live in Tulsa, too.

I would say your stats look pretty close to the average, especially for in-state! When did you submit? Also, I guess all I can say is that I have heard from some graduates of OSU that they really take into account everything.... They look at the whole person and not just the numbers!

I hope that helps

Last year I applied very late (february) so I was lucky I even got an interview. This year I applied in June. I hope and pray I get an early-ish interview this year.

Do you know how they do the interviews?

I know this week is the first round and I have an interview November 5th, so is that the second round?

I'm out of state and was surprised to even get an interview. Especially one this early. I really like this school from what I have heard about it. I am going in early November.

I'm out of state as well and so was I. I added OSU really late too. What day?

Their interviews are very personal and low stress. I was really impressed last time. They treat you really kindly.

11/5. Do you know much about the school? I haven't been able to find much from current students on here about rotations or what the students think of the school.

I interview on the same day 🙂

From what I've heard, everyone loves OSU. I know someone that graduated there and he matched into a very competitive allopathic residency. He said going to OSU was an amazing experience. I also have a friend whose Dad is a DO and he said he LOVED practicing in Oklahoma!

Well, wadja wanna know?

School is awesome, very well rounded education. We're in a transition to making most tests computer based at the moment. Anatomy is fully computer based (both lab and lecture tests) and histology is somewhat computer based on the microscope side (no scopes, all slides are scanned) but tests are still paper based in there. They are talking of moving towards CBT though. Biochem and OMM are also debating it.

Rotations: Official information:
http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/student/incoming/lateryears.cfm
http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/college/clinical/clerkship/calendar.cfm

Outside information: the OSU Teaching hospital just got a huge amount of funding and a large part went into getting it out of debt and the state buying it out, however, a smaller but significant portion went into the residency programs there (the largest portion to radiology getting the whole damn thing revamped, next largest to the cardiology/Cardiothoracic surgery including brand new cath lab, and many other fun things).

We have club meetings quite often and many times residents and/or attendings from the respective clubs (ie Emergency medicine, radiology, gen surgery) and they discuss their job responsibilities, income, experiences to expect as a Med Student, etc.. it all seems very well.

And as for the whole application, match rates are usually high with some variability for those applying DO & MD. DO match is much earlier than MD match, so if you apply both and the MD is your first choice and you get into your DO, you have to forfeit all DO and re-try for MD; if you don't get MD, then you have to scramble and most likely wont get your specialty choice.

anyways... more info needed?

Wow that was super informative. I guess the only thing I can't find is... what are the locations of your clinical rotations?

DISREGARD... found it 🙂

Congrats to all of you who got acceptances 🙂. OSU is an awesome school!

I got an interview invite today (I submitted my secondaries rather late...), and was assigned for a January 31st interview. I'm very happy to get that chance.

I know this is a longshot, but if anyone is canceling on an earlier interview to the school, please PM me. Thanks 🙂

Congrats! I can't believe they are scheduling that far in advance already! I got a call last Friday and it was for November 5th! Wow

Wow.... It is not looking too good for me then if OSU is already scheduling Jan. interviews. 🙁

Yeah same here. Ouch.... Thought my app was better than last year...

They only schedule that far in advance for extenuating circumstances. Don't worry about it! Seriously.

See above, I believe there is still one round left in November and one in December. Then In January/Feb they start the interview blitz and do interviews every week.

Thank you. Do you know if all schools have the osteopathic match in advance like that?

Yes, the National Match via the ERAS occurs at the same time for all schools. In short, DO match results are out mid Feb, and MD match are out mid April. Scramble starts as soon as results are out.

Thanks for your inside information Phlame217! I am just so eager to quit my unrewarding job.

when I was called for interview it was late december the january interviews are not even starting to fill up yet. even then the class will be only around half full so don't start sweating yet. remember osu does rolling admissions and will not fill the class with all first/second round. True it is better for early interview but there will be plenty of spots in the months ahead. Also don't forget about the bridge or masters programs the admissions process for those are different than the regular program. Any questions just shoot me a pm or even better contact the admissions directly they are super

I just got accepted to AZCOM and I really cannot wait to come interview at OSU! They are definitely my top two, but I think Tulsa may be the selling point for me. Here's to hoping these next two weeks go fast =)

Congrats! Tulsa is awesome aside from all the construction, but most of it will be finishing by the spring which is nice. I am a little PO'd today because two of the 8 applicants were no shows atleast last I heard.

Ah thats not fair! I could have been there lol

Yeah, just let me know if OSU wants me to drive up from Edmond to take their spot! I can be there in 90 minutes. 🙂
