OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No idea on numbers, but I have never heard of someone wanting to do a urban core (Tulsa/OKC) end up a rural core (i.e. Durant). However, rural cores have limited slot and the reverse does happen occasionally. OKC has limited slots so it is a luck of the draw thing, but Tulsa generally is never an issue. I am staying local since my first child will be born this May/June and I want to be home as much as possible.

Thanks again Phlame! I would like to do at least one elective rotation in a rural area (aside from the mandatory rural rotation), but I would really love to stay at OSUMC for my rotations.

Congrats on your upcoming first child! It must be a really exciting time for you!

BTW, I'll be creating a facebook group and SDN class thread soon. Most likely sometime late December as more and more people decide to go here. Lemme know if anyone wants to help with the fb group!

I can help just so you get enough people to start it up but its purely up to you

The facebook page is extremely important. You will use it constantly during school to exchange study tips, plan class activities, or just to be friends. There are dozens of posts every day in our classes group.

Does anyone know if they reviewed the December 1st and 2nd interview dates together? I was in the Friday (December 2nd) interview and have not received a call. Thanks!
I'm not positive that everyone has been contacted, but I interviewed on December 2, and received a call on the 9th.

Phone calls go out on the same day majority of the time, if not the next. Be on the watch for a snail mail letter.

I have a question about financial aid: Some of the students I talked to said they went ahead and used their financial aid (whatever they took out additionally) for a downpayment on a house. When do these funds usually become available? Is it at the beginning of the semester or several weeks into it??

They're usually quick about it. Its been somewhere between the day before class begins up to a week after.

Accepted! Got the call Friday while on vacation in NYC! What an awesome way to celebrate!! Good luck to those who are still playing the "waiting" game, I feel your pain!

Interviewed 10/27, Wait-listed 11/15, Accepted 12/16 (phone call) Accepted 12/19 (snail mail)

So I'm an out of state applicant that just found when I called the admissions office that I was contacted for an interview back in October. I scheduled the earliest interview date that they had available on January 19. Do anybody else have an interview scheduled for the 19th? Seems like a little late in the year, otherwise I wouldn't be as worried. Let me know what you think.? Sounds like a great place and I can't wait to see the campus.

Ok so I am a little confused. I was waitlisted earlier this year and in the letter that came it said that if anything changed they would contact me through the mail service, but according to bretski47 they call if you get taken off the waitlist. Which one is the real way it works?

How much time do MS2s get to study for boards after finals? I think some schools give a month to a month and a half

Any change other than acceptance typically is communicated via snail mail. Acceptance whether off of the list or post interview is always a call.

Its up to you. Boards have to be taken by July when rotations start. You can schedule them anytime you want from the end of finals (typically the First week of May) till the end of June. Poppie (Dr. Goljan) gives a short board review after finals and then its up to you to do your thing until you take your boards.

No worries on the interview, plenty of time.

Is my application suppose to be complete before hearing from them? They've got my secondary, all my transcripts, my mcat, probably all the letters, but I'm still waiting for any sign of communication from them. What am I suppose to expect atm? Don't know what to do.

Just call and ask Sarah the status of your file.

I interview on the 8th of February. Got the call from Sarah today.

congrats! be confident and you will do well.

Does anyone know how full the class is? I applied a while ago and every time I call they tall me that my application is still under review. Is anyone in the same boat?

Ahh I was really hoping to go here but due to personal reasons, I will have to stay in CA. Best of luck to everyone!

Same here. I have been complete since like October

I was told a couple of times that it was still under review as well over the past months. I got a call earlier this month offering and interview. My interview was today. No talks of how full the class was. It was said that 50% of the final class spends some time on the wait list at some point. So who knows how full it is. But even if it was full at this point, there would be a lot of people that have accepted spots that end up giving them up for one reason or another.

Well got a letter in the mail Friday, wait list it is..I was really hoping to avoid the wait list but trying to stay positive. Anyone have insight on how the wait list works? Is it ranked, do they review the wait list after all interviews are finished or do they periodically review the wait list?

The initial wait list is not ranked. They review all wait-listers periodically and pull from the list. They pull from the wait list while interviews are still going on, as well as periodically after they are all done. At the end of May/start of June the wait list is cut to a "final wait list". The final wait list may be ranked, but I'm not sure. I was wait listed last year and didn't make the final cut. I saw people who were wait listed make it off before and after my interview (which wasn't until mid-March). As much as 50% of the class spends some time on the wait list, so its not always doom and gloom. My interview was last week this time around. I'm hoping I don't have to go to the wait list, but if I do, I'm hoping that I don't spend a whole lot of time there. Good luck.

Call Lindsay or Dr. Cunningham and ask. I spent a week on the waiting list because they needed my most recent transcript.

Interviewed last week and got the call yesterday! So excited!!!

I interviewed on the 27th... i thought everything went great but now i'm on the wait list.. hopefully i hear something soon!! Any tips of what i could do next to help my situation??

Yep, mine was on the 26th. Went great I thought. Waitlisted yet again. And now we play the waiting game...

Anyone on the wait list I encourage you to call and ask. It could be grades, it could be certain ECs, test scores, or it could just be a waiting game!

Don't get discouraged, I know there are reapplicants on here but the wait list is not a bad place to be.

Do you know when they will contact us if we applied for the DO/MS program ( the four year track)? I told them I was interested after my interview

If we contact to ask why we got waitlisted should we talk to Lindsay or Sarah anyone know who the best person to talk to is?

is this you're second year applying to osu? @longroad59

Yeah. I didn't make it off of the wait list last year. My interview was mid-March last year. Interview was Jan. 26 this time. Since my last interview, I finished my MPH and had a 4.0 in my last semester, got some more shadowing, and improved my biological score on the MCAT a tad. And my interview was night and day better than last year's interview. I don't have anything missing from my app. I don't know. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Any advice on the interview? I would love any guidance 🙂

still going crazy on the waitlist.... it sucks being in limbo!!

I know the feeling...I was on the waitlist at my state school last year and now OSU this year....it's probably the worst feeling not knowing...

does anyone know the average amount of time people spend on the waitlist... i mean i know it is possible to find out you are offered a spot like a week before class starts but im sure that doesnt happen that often!

Interviewing on the 24th. Got the call last week from Sarah. Looking forward to it, yet again. Hopefully this year pans out.

At the interview day, Dr. Stewart tells everyone that 50% of the class spends some time on the wait list during the application cycle.

Well I'll say this guy is ready to get off that waitlist train....agony is an understatement...
