OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Even if it is full right now, there's always some wait list movement as people get multiple acceptances and eventually have to decide where they're actually going. The last person in my class was pulled off the waitlist the day before orientation started.

Wow! What an awesome surprise for that person!!! "By the way, your White Coat Ceremony is tomorrow!" I wonder how that worked out...

Does anyone know if the committee has already met for February to reassess the waitlist?

Anyone heard of any recent acceptances off of the waitlist? I read in the thread from last year that the class is normally full by the end of February, is it full this year already?

I interviewed on February 24 and they told us it was probably about 80% full. They added a few more seats and this might be why they haven't filled up yet.

He lived out of a hotel for the first few weeks. 🙂 White coat ceremony was after orientation.

Our white coat ceremony (so excited by the way) is our 2nd day of orientation week. Glad it worked out for him!

I got accepted February 16th from the waitlist. I interviewed January 20th. I think they review waitlist applicants every time they have interviews... Maybe not...

The class size went from 96 (last year) to 115 (this year)!

I have a question. I applied to the 4-year DO/MS program. When do I hear back about that? Also, do I need to write an additional essay for that or something?

Hey folks, I have a few questions for the OSU-COM people that surf this forum; current, future, interviewing, etc.

I am a non-trad student with the hopes of applying next cycle or maybe even the '14 cycle. A brief background of myself (hopefully not to lengthy) is that I initially attended college in Minnesota after graduating high school in Broken Arrow. I met my to-be wife and mother of my two kids in high school then we married 2 years after graduation. I was paying for college out of my own pocket and found I wasn't able to afford school after a year at a private university, so I joined the Army. I am still serving in the Army after 6 and 1/2 years, and set to get out in August. I have since lived in several states, mobilized on deployment, received a Purple Heart, served in the Infantry, combat trauma centers overseas, and have been finishing my contract in Washington DC as part of The Old Guard laying to rest our heros with honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

I never knew I wanted to go into medicine, or even finish college for that matter until I got "volunteered" (told) to receive my EMT-I as an infantryman to assist our combat paramedics. Once that training started I fell in love with anatomy, trauma, and realized I actually liked sciences. Once my deployments ended in 2010 I started taking courses at a local community college here in VA.

Like I said earlier, I am moving back in August and will be attending TU to finish my degree. I guess my questions really begin here...
I am confident in my GPA from my CC courses ive taken, but I hear a lot of schools dont like to see CC pre-reqs. I took an prep course for the MCAT but my practice tests were not shaping up to where i was comfortable so I decided to wait to take it until I had some more upper division courses from TU.

From those of you that have been in similar situations as myself, have you felt that things like 'working full time, while going to school full time, with a spouse and kids' has been a difficult task to juggle with the aspirations of going to med school? Does OSU look at CC pre-reqs unfavorably? I try to stay off the forums mostly because I find it easy to compare myself to others and get discouraged, but being that my home is Tulsa, all our family is in Tulsa, and OSU is really the only school I truly can place at the top of my list, I look for a little respite and advice in this thread. I came home for this past thanksgiving and took a tour of the school and afterwards found myself standing in the parking lot just staring at the building...here I am a year or 2 from even applying and it already feels like 'home.'

Thanks so much for reading this, I know it was long. And my up-most congratulations to all of those on here that have gotten accepted and to those who have interviewed; not enough people realize what truly is put into this process physically and emotionally, only seeing the academic achievement. My heart goes out to all of you and shares in your excitement and celebration in the hopes that someday mine dream will also be realized.

Gods speed to all ya'll.

First, let me say thank you for your service to our country. Personally, I wouldn't let what anyone tells you in any blog or anything what you can and cannot do. You will see when you apply that every school gives you essays where you can write about circumstances such as the ones you described above. Make sure you include all of these circumstances in essays and maybe even in your personal statement. Just make sure you get a decent GPA (I'd say 3.3+) and MCAT (24+) and I think you will get noticed by the admissions committee. As far as pre-recs go obviously non-CC classes are better but if that is the only option you have then you really have no choice.

I have commented extensively in the non-trad forum on the CC vs 4-year school with a general advice to avoid CC's. However, Tulsa is an exception and OSU understands the situation here (actually, the whole country understands the Tulsa situation. I once talked to an adcom at YALE who said that they understand that Tulsa's public college situation required a CC and they didn't mark Tulsa people down for it). I was challenged on it at Mayo, but OU and OSU understand.

I have most of my prereqs at TCC, a few at TU, and a few at NSU-BA. OSU never blinked at this. It is common. OSU is very, very friendly to non-traditional students. Half the class is non-trad. Even extreme geezers like me (I'm 49) are welcome. One member of our class is even older than I am.

I worked a full-time job most of the way through undergrad. It's hard, but not as hard as medical school will be. I hope that you are saving your VA benefits for grad school, I hear that they are MUCH more valuable that way.

You are in great shape and have a great story. Assuming you do well on the MCAT, you shouldn't have any problems.

There's a lot of people with great advice. You need to talk to Lindsey Kirkpatrick. You have a great story and you sound motivated and passionate. She'll look at where you are and let you know what you need to do. Getting into medical school is definitely a journey to be commended! It's difficult to compare one student to another because on many levels each applicant is unique and is competitive in different ways! OSU-COM really embraces non trad students. You're likely closer than you think in some areas (clinical experience, a story, and preparing for the MCAT). Talk to Lindsey about where you are with your classes and what you need to do or take.

I talked to her about 2 & 1/2 years ago less prepared than you are now, but I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt this is what I'm meant to do, become a DO. Now, two unplanned pregnancies & births later, I am accepted to start in August with the class of 2016. I have two beautiful healthy babies and a wonderful husband to share the experience with and to remind me why I'm doing this!

My husband graduated from BA in 03', and I graduated from BA in 04'. What about you? Maybe we know each other.

Talk to LINDSEY!!!! Her number is 918-561-8468. If this is what you want, NOTHING can stop you!!!!

I just got my call for an interview on the 16th. I know it's late in the cycle, but I was wondering if anybody interviewed recently and would be willing to reveal how the process was and what sort of questions I can expect. I assume that it will be the normal, why do you want to be a do, why OSU, what is your biggest flaw and strength, but any info anybody would be willing to reveal would be much appreciated.

I don't know, but you need to call Lindsey Kirkpatrick. There's a deadline for supplemental application material, so call ASAP! You should always confirm all of your materials are in and check by phone that your file is complete and that they have everything you think they do! There have been several instances when they didn't receive documents I thought they had. If you're in town, give it to them in person.

There is a place on SDN that has a ton of interview questions they've asked in the past. There's a balance between being prepared and sounding prepared! Be confident, passionate, thoughtfully answer questions, and aim to allow the interviewers to feel like they connect with you. Iffy should feel like a conversation more than talking at them or merely a Q&A session. Know- Why medicine? Why DO? Why OSU? Current trends in medicine, and be prepared to talk about anything that's in your application. They may ask situational questions, but just be honest and think "the patient is first!" be clear and concise in your answers, and don't be afraid to pause to think about your answer.

Thanks for your responses to my (concern) questions. Most of my pre-reqs are from CC in Virginia just because taking night courses is all I can or can be allowed to do while still full time active duty. I will finish the last two and take all my upper division courses at TU starting in August.

Its so nice to hear that the non-trad is not out of the ordinary, it definitely makes the "at-ease" level go way up! Im just trying to take one day at a time and enjoy the journey. Currently im not taking classes because I depleted my tuition assistance the Army allots for their soldiers and im about 25 credits over the cap of what i can even transfer. So im just working and running as an EMT for volunteer time and some more experience in the county I live with the fire department. Its good to be out getting hands on experience, helping people, and it really fuels the fire to learn more about medicine, immediate care, and EMS. I love it.

I graduated from BA in '05, however a good amount of my close friends where in the '04 class, perhaps we may have known each other at one time! Such a small world!
Thanks again for the replys

Quick question - I recently was telling a physician from my home town how the process was going (currently) on waitlist..he wasn't one that wrote my letter of recommendation for my
supplemental app, but he offered to write me one now and he would send it in for me...I was just wondering some opinions on whether this would be a good idea or not?

I've never been involved in admissions, but I can't see where an unsolicited letter sent directly to the school by a physician can be a bad thing. It shows that a doctor who knows you well believes in you. I believe I would tell him that it would be appreciated.

I agree with Dale... definitely a good thing! Good luck!

Wow! Purple heart! I believe that those who interviewed me would be honored to have you at the school as I am honored that you served with sacrifice. Your assets are far reaching beyond any weakness. You deserve to get in, so relax. The lower level courses don't matter at all. It is the upper division that they look at. There are people who have been accepted with minimal MCAT scores, and I do mean MINIMAL, but a high GPA. Personally, I think that NSU is a good option. Before taking my upper divisions, I asked people in admissions where to take them. I went to NSU and got an interview just after applying. There are very strong ties between OSU and NSU and OU and NSU. It's much less expensive, so your military dollars will extend farther. Your life experience will show them that you are not going to decide that it is too hard and drop out. You have a huge advantage by your experiences and these medical schools count that 50%. MCAT is 25, and gpa is 25.

I got wait listed in mid February, has anybody heard from being on the wait list at that time?

I was waitlisted back in November… Has anybody heard anything lately?

Hey everyone! I interviewed on 2/22 and haven't heard anything back yet 🙁 Sarah told us that we should hear back in no more than two weeks, has anyone that interviewed on the same date as me heard anything? Good luck everyone!!

I interviewed on the 23rd and have also not received any news...🙁

Me too. No phone call, no letter...today anyway. We'll see what tomorrow shows in the mail.

Haven't heard anything here, seems to be quiet lately..I know of some people interviewing this week, but it has to be getting close to the end of interviews now and from what I have heard (rumors) the class is not full

I also interviewed on 2/22, nothing back yet. Sarah said they made the decisions on 3/7, let's hope and pray things work out!

I spoke with Sarah this morning regarding those who interviewed on 2/22, she said calls will be made and letters will be sent out this afternoon!

Got a reply from OSU regarding an email I sent them a month ago....they said the class wasn't full yet and the last interviews are this week or next week...thought everyone would like to know

WOW! That's pretty exciting! Let me know if you hear anything, I'll do the same!

Has anybody received any phone call or letter from the interviews of February 22nd, 23rd, and 24th?

My interview is on Friday, and I think that's the last day that they're interviewing anyone. Good luck to everyone!

Good luck!!! You'll do great =] ^^^ This is to bbryant21

And to everyone that hasn't heard anything yet, I know it sucks waiting but hopefully you all hear good news soon! I'm rooting for you all!:xf::xf:

Hang in there everyone! Know that at this point they'll waitlist more people than they'll accept since the class is closer to full. So, don't be discouraged! Waitlist is more of a good thing since you still have a good chance of getting accepted! Please, communicate with Sarah to make sure they have everything you thought/think they have as far as the classes you're currently taking, letters, shadowing, community service, up to date MCAT, etc. I made sure on a couple things they didn't have in my file, and I got accepted shortly after from the waitlist!

I interviewed the 23rd and got my waitlist letter today...Boo 🙁

Waitlisted too...again. Letter came today as well. Never came off of it last year either. I'm tired of waiting, feel like I've been on hold for three years and it's frustrating that I could almost be done with school by now.

We interviewed the same day.

Has anyone heard anything about Bridge interviews? Will prehistology be online for bridge students? Any idea when Bridge interviews will be held ?
new to SDN... love it so far... excellent community very professional.

Bridge histo is online and in class. Traditional summer histo is online only.

Bridge usually occurs in April I believe, not really sure. Just give the school an call.

Wait list letter today. On the bright side of things, at least we didn't get rejection letters! Best of luck to you all. 🙂

Did they give you any feedback last year as to how you could improve your chances of acceptance? It is a very frustrating situation, but I bet this will be your lucky year :xf:
By the way, My name is Amber. Are you the one whos fiancé is in the program?

Stay positive no matter what, don't give up, and keep in communication with the school!

Thank you! I emailed Sarah, asking if I may have feedback on how to improve my chances of acceptance. Hopefully she can give me a little direction. We all really appreciate the love and support!! This is why I know that OSU is where I'm suppose to be🙂
