OSU Deferred List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The large number of board failures is definitely a concern. I'm sure changes will be made, but again - is it in time for the current students to see them? Probably not. Keeping in mind that the final tally for board scores for that class wasn't complete until sometime in the fall, the current academic year was already underway. So, too late for substantial changes to be made for this academic year. I guarantee you, though, that changes are and will be made. Most students don't realize it, but a curriculum review for both pathways is currently in progress.

Yes, that must be why the director of the IP program came in on the first day of med 2 classes this year, and announced that his committee had found "nothing wrong with the IP cirriculum", conveniently absolving himself of all responsibility in the process. According to him, there was too much distraction on account of TV and video gaming happening in the world responsible for the atrocious performance of the class of 2007 on the board exams, which he could not be held responsible for. The only thing they've changed as a token gesture are the passing rates, which - for your class - sucks. They haven't made any useful changes like giving the class more time to study for the board exam... Or an end of year review course that - unlike Capstone - is actually useful.

As to whether or not it was the students or the curriculum . . . well - who knows. Suffice it to say that the administration was NOT happy with the results and IS looking into what needs to be done so that it doesn't happen again. I have talked with professors who have taught at OSU for many, many years who said that that particular class was one of the least academically inclined classes they had ever taught (didn't come to class, didn't study, didn't do well on class tests, etc). The more convincing evidence for me was talking to some of the STUDENTS in this class who said that most of the people that they knew who failed the boards didn't study hardly at all (for class OR the boards) and partied all the time.

Yes, if this was such a loser class they wouldn't have had such high MCAT scores and GPAs. What you think these people decided at the age of 23-25 to suddenly become irresponsible party youth? Or start playing video games 40 hours a week as Hitchcock claimed? Whatever. More of the administration shrugging responsibility off itself.

I have to agree with what many people have said about this being the worst statement about OSU I have heard. While at OSU interviewing I spoke with quite a few students and none of them had any serious complaints. In fact, all of them were very enthusiastic about the school (quite different than several of the other schools I interviewed at).

Having reviewed the match list for OSU the past couple of years I have a very difficult time believing their curriculum is subpar. It makes me ask if perhaps you are one of the failures or if something has happened to make you take it personally. If so, I am sorry. I appreciate your opinion; however, I don't think it wise to fault a school completely off of a single opinion (including my own--which is probably biased since I was accepted at OSU).

Definitely, people have their unique needs and a school that meets those needs for one individual may be severely lacking in areas needed by another individual. In my opinion, the trick to being happy in med school is successfully identifying the aspects important to you as a person/student, finding and school that addresses those aspects, and getting in that school (The last part is kind of the most frustrating part....). If you don't get the right fit--you probably won't be completely happy. 😀

You do realize that when you interview here, they rope in a handful of highly perky brown nosers to show you around. Most of the medical students will not approach those being interviewed, unless they themselves also happen to be perky interviewers, off-duty on that day. I've never had any of the candidates who sit around in the lounges outside the lecture halls approach me and ask me my opinion on the school, which isn't entirely negative, but it has stuff they don't tell you about when spend all of 5 hours here on interview day talking to a carefully selected group of medical students.

Hmm...after interviews I loved OSU so much more than UCinn, and currently I'm accepted at UCinn but only waitlisted at OSU. I always said I'd definitely go to OSU over UCinn if I get in, but having waited so long (therefore getting a little used to the idea of having to attending UCinn) and reading comments like this about OSU does make me a bit confused and unsure about what I would do if OSU did offer me a spot off the waitlist...at this point I'd still probably take it, but it's still food for thought.

Messerschmitts- I am in EXACTLY the same boat. As of right now I am going to Cinci and am actually heading down there on Tuesday to look at apartments. I keep wondering when I will say it is "too late" to accept a spot from OSU if it were offered to me, and I have a hard time committing to an apartment or anything right now... I wish this process were conducted more like in the past- it'd be nice to have an idea of where on the waitlist we are in order to make better decisions about what to do with other acceptances...

Amen Buckeyebee and Messerschmitts. I'm accepted at Toledo, getting pumped about going there (I truly loved it there when I visited)...but a part of me thinks...when would I really say no to OSU if they actually called? I just want to start getting ready for school...is that so wrong?! Come on OSU...we are all hanging on like sloopy here...

Just dropping a quick note here: the waitlist is still moving. I got a call friday offering a spot, but unfortunately they weren't offering aid, so I declined today. Hopefully, that spot goes to one of you guys! 🙂
