Really? I thought you were scared of it too? I remember reading about it in the pharmacy forum. Does it hurt when someone (that does not have experience) practice on you? 😱

It hurts like hell, I had bruise the size of a good apple on my arm after receiving nearly 30 trials, 6 of which hit my bone. It was well worth it though - I got over my fears and felt like I truly made an impact. We have a lot of immunocompromised individuals in this city and it's important that they received their H1N1 immunizations.

30 in ONE day???? 😱 I dropped dental school b/c I didn't want people practice numbing my mouth with needles!!! this might be even more scary!!! I don't know whats worst practice shots in mouth or arms! 🙄

But I am glad you aren't scare to give shots anymore...I am sure with the saturation...anything EXTRA that you can do will help boost your resume when the time comes to search for a job! 🙂

I wouldn't care about giving shots as far as being grossed out, but I would feel awkward if I hurt someone... I think that would make me a little scared of it. In high school I took cosmetology as an elective and we got to do nails in class and get tip money, and sometimes we would cut people or hurt them on accident so I guess it's kind of the same.

Whenever I have to get an IV or blood drawn I get pricked a million times. Apparently I have "deep veins" whatever that means. I don't weigh enough to donate blood though... I'm not that skinny or anything I'm just short. My roommate freshman year donated blood one day, and later on her boyfriend and her were joking around and he sat on her arm and it started gushing blood. It was pretty bad and ruined her sheet.

I feel the same way. Even when I accidentally bump into someone or step on someone's foot people have a way of guilt tripping me. I'd feel bad "hurting" someone but I'm almost positive I couldn't put them into a coma or some kind of deathly state from a little immunization. If you work in certain states pharmacists don't have the ability to even give immunizations! Which is a plus if you don't like immediate patient contact.

I've only gotten blood draw a few times and each time they couldn't find me veins... when I was reallllly young (~4) I had the flu and almost died b/c I was so dehydrated and they couldn't find my veins to give me an IV! I'm glad I can't give blood either... I got dizzy after giving 1 vial!

Practice on oranges first. Once you overcome the fear of orange juice squirt you can move on to squishy humans

Once you get in, you'll see oranges are out of the question. Gluck next year during the training !

Heh, I was just joking because thats what some people I know at USC joked to me about during their first year.. or was it grapefruits?

Do tell, why are oranges out of the question? 🙂

You practice on your classmate during class while the preceptor is watching. It's not 30 times though during class. It's only once. The other times were simply backed by my extraordinary motivation and unparallaled drive to become exceedingly excellent at immunizing people. I strived to be awesome even if it meant experiencing physical people and looking like a zombie.

I remember you saying you have two degrees... did you do one at Stanford first and then one at UCD? Since you already graduated from college did the military send you straight to OCS?

UCD came immediately after I finished my tenure at The Farm. I've basically been in college, in some iteration, since 1998 when I graduated high school at 16. Even in the Army, I spent a year at the Defense Lang. Institute learning Farsi and Arabic, LOL. I just can never escape school. I am convinced I will get my Pharm.D and then dislike it and end up back in school for yet something else. I have 5 AA degrees from my various training programs plus initial college experience. That's got to be some kind of record for useless pieces of paper.

I chose not to go to OCS because, at the advising of my father, officers with no "grunt" experience make terrible leaders, have to work twice as hard for respect, etc. In other words, they're book-learned but not savvy... and I did not want that to be me. So I enlisted.

I agree that accelerating is a lot more useful and fun than actually speeding. Since you can't legally speed, it makes merging on the highway so much better. Toll booths on the entrance ramp are the best... My car isn't that fast or anything but I can definitely tell the difference when driving a V4 versus a V6... I've only driven V8 (heavy) SUVs and trucks though.

Just as a point of clarification - There is no "V" configuration for 4-cylinder engines. They came predominantly in "I" config. (Inline) and some companies put them in "Flat" (transverse) config. 😉

Unfortunately (Fortunately in most cases, but not for me!), the FasTrak electronic toll thing makes accelerating from toll booths pretty much superfluous, as you really only have to slow down to 60-65 mph if you have it. Some toll bridges are still old and you have to slow to ~30, though... their ETC readers are clunky and slow.

I used to cheer for a gym in Miami called Top Gun All Stars.

LOL... awesome!

Oh wow... and I thought I was going to be in school forever! If I'm not accepted this year I think I will apply to more accelerated schools. Isn't UoP a 3 year program? I happen to enjoy school a lot, but I can't do this forever.

I kind of figured it would be really hard to get respect if you go straight to OCS. I don't even feel like college would be preparation for something like that... I'd want the experience first.

You're right... I guess I was thinking of the iVTECHs or whatever in the rice burners even though the 4 cylinders are straight. LOL Don't Jeeps have inline 6 cylinders too?

We have this thing called a 'sun pass' in Florida where you normally don't have to slow down, but on the entrance ramps you have to practically stop because it's not wide enough to drive through quickly. They're always on the far right of the toll booth too, so then you have to merge over like 4 lanes just to get on the highway past the people who stopped to physically pay. It's stupid.

I'm suprised you guys practice on each other. We practice on patients:laugh:.

I just ate 6 brownies out of stress and I'm ready to start studying for my exam. :scared:

Got some chicken bits, some beer, and a can of Eagle Brand...

Bring on the snow. 😎

People at my school wouldn't stop talking about the snow the whole day.

I have to drive in that general direction tomorrow anyway, so I might as well hope I can get there in the morning. It would be nice if it snows in the afternoon or something since we'll get to play with the snow once classes are done

Those were regular brownies, right? 🤣

Yeah, 🙁 I wouldn't be able to study if it was the other kind. I'm freaken stressed and food makes me happy. Not being able to fit in my clothes the next day = not so happy. Sweats it is tomorrow.

You don't have to stay extremely skinny all the time to look attractive. I saw one girl in pharmaceutics lab this week, and she was dressed all formally even though we didn't have to dress up that much, but just dress up a little. I thought she was sexy  But really she is 🙂

Don't feel bad... In the past 12 hours I ate an entire box of glazed Pop Ems doughnut holes. I also tried a DNA brand energy drink (gross it tasted like Tang)... drank 3 cups of coffee... and had buffalo chicken fingers with chunky bleu cheese.

When I eat a lot of junk, particularly late at night, I feel like I need to wear gym pants the next day too.

Awww snap, crazy bob stepping up his gaaaaame. 😀

Seems every chick in grad school is married/in a serious relationship.

But, I do hear about how some girls in my class who were in serious relationships broke up with their boyfriends when they met someone or were interested in someone else.

I'm not sure if this girl would be the type to do that though. But, if she does that, then could it also be likely that, if we ended up dating, she might break up with me for someone else?

Perhaps, but that risk is there in any relationship.

I'm not big on dating in your class though. It's much more fun to watch the drama than to be a part of it.

I'm a sharpshooter. I can hit a paper center-mass from 300 meters 6 times in a row with fixed sights on an M4...

For a price, I can make said boyfriend disappear!*

* I never actually said that.

Can you make my classmate disappear ? 🙄

Depends. I prefer the targets not to be women... chivalry and all. That'd be extra.

😛

I haven't discharged a firearm in months... I should probably change that, but the nearest range without exorbitant rates is in Vacaville. And I hate cow town.

Don't worry, it won't be a pretty sweet girl. Just some guy. 🙄 Practice makes perfect, so this would polish your skill.

So serious!

 I know. But I am seriously interested in that girl. There were few times last semester when I thought she was looking at me like she was interested in me, but she hasn't looked at me that way in a while, so I dunno if that was a one-time thing or if something happened.

The hardest decision I ever had to make in the Army was dropping a woman who everyone was screaming had explosives under her hijab.

Maybe it's some genetic thing in the lizard part of my brain but firing at women just seems... wrong. Which would make sense, since for the last X thousands of years that we've all been warring, very few instances exist of women combatants.

Anyway, on a lighter note, my aspiring atty. for a wife would probably recommend this as a bad line of chat because if your target did end up with a ventilation hole in his head I'd be suspect primero. 😛

Jesus, has my post above not taught you anything ? 😕 Use inferential logic and apply to your own case scenario.

Passion, very interesting story - thanks for sharing.

Great story, but scary. It's unfortunate that had to happen, but under the circumstances I think most people would have done the same thing.

Psssh, amateur. What, are you going to brag about next? Being able to throw a rock into the ocean from aboard a cruise ship 400 miles off the coast of Virginia? A WV boy can do that at age 7.

Hell, the best sharpshooters the Army got can't beat a handful of WV boys from the hills. Half of 'em were probably drunk of the shine, too.

We all know that WV boys from the hills came out of the womb as Force Recon snipers, Mikey.

I ain't got no shame being beaten by a hillsman. At least I smell better.
👍

So I got up this morning and got ready and stuff, and then I read am email saying that classes were cancelled. It felt really awkward because I haven't missed any of my classes this year. There was probably only once when a class was actually cancelled and rescheduled.

It's also difficult for me to try to study when I'm at home. If I were in an apartment, I'd study a lot better.
