Almost!
Although I realize now the problem with overhead lighting... flaws in your wall can't simply be hidden. Hooray for getting to putty/sand/paint again!

I wish my friends in college were in town already. They don't start until a week or two later, so I haven't really had anyone else to hang out with 🙁

We could take scooby's suggestion and have SDNers hang out together. It could be fun.

They are about the same, but CPG is a 3 year accelerated program, which means NO summer vacations! 🙁

You have some advantages with warm weather, some pretty girls, and straight roads for going really fast

But staying in your home state has its own advantages too. If you go to a new area, you don't know what to expect from people. If you stay close enough to home, you already know what people in your area are like.

Another year of money and paying off student loans.

Go with the 3 year program.

Advantages:
  • Less debt
  • One more year to earn a pharmacist's salary
  • One more year to gain experience as a pharmacist
  • It will be impressive because you did everything in 3 years instead of the usual 4.
  • Possibly retiring one year earlier - but will this matter as much as we think it will when the time comes?
Disadvantage:
  • More stress
  • Faster pace in courses
  • Possibly less time (than usual) for social events
  • Can't relax during the summers
  • Less time for networking and making connections before becoming a pharmacist

The debt is about the same. They compensate for the year lost by increasing the tuition for each of the 3 years.

No I am saying if the tuition for a PharmD at CCP is 120K for 4 years it will be 120K for 3 years at CPG. They're approximately the same. They dont sacrifice anything. They just eliminate your breaks.

This is true... I applied to one 3 year school (South University in Savannah, Ga) and it actually comes out to be the most expensive out of the other schools I applied to. That's just one school though I'm sure it depends. I don't know if I can go there though because the A&P series wasn't offered at my undergrad so I still need to take the second half over the summer (and South requires A&P). So does UF, but I have time to complete my prereqs for them if I get an interview.

This waiting is stressing me out but I just finished my app so I can't complain. I just wish I knew where I am going to be next year. LOL

I understand your position. You are married right? How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Yep, been married 4 years now, almost 5. I'm 27 but I feel way older courtesy of uncle sam. Got a few miles on me. Both my wife and I are in school, she's prepping for law schools right now, has her apps in and everything. They don't do supplementals or interviews (save for a couple of schools) so basically she just has to sit and wait until ~March.

That's cool! Yeah, so I would totally be ready to get into the work force if I was in your position. We have 4 more years, so hang in there! 👍

I think I will feel very similar in a couple years (I'll be 23 in May). Don't get me wrong, I love school, but it doesn't pay bills and I'm eager to start a career.

Most of my friends did the 4 years degree thing and a lot of them are working already but the thing is, some of them had a really really hard time finding work, and I'd say a large percentage of them are not working in their field or even a job that requires a degree. So I think we made a good choice.

But the whole broke college student thing isn't as funny as it used to be. I don't think I'm as cool as I used to be eating Ramen noodles, macaroni, and PBJ everyday while dumping change in the grocery store counting machine.

All of my friends are working (that I went to UCD with) and some of them have really good jobs, but yeah, very few of them work in a discipline directly related to what they studied in school. My best friend irks me because he's making about $90,000 a year right now (with yearly step increases and COLA increases) and amazing benefits with the county with just his bachelor's degree! But, them's the breaks.

I agree, the broke college student thing was so charming when I was 20... Far less so, now.

Oh I definitely think a lot of government jobs have the best compensation package. Especially in places with high cost of living you can see some really high salaries.

So you didn't take out more loans than you had to just for tuition and stuff? I probably willnext year and after that until I graduate so I won't have to feel pressured to try to work to earn the amount of money I could have taken out in loans.

For me, it's a lot better to focus on school only and have more loans than to try to work, take out less in loans, and also worry about studying under pressure with a time limit. I would eventually have to quit work like I did few years ago while I was in college. Schoolwork was just too much for me at the time to keep working.

My parents keep saying that I should taken out the minimumm amount and just work to earn the rest, but I'm going to be paying back at least some money anyway when I'm a pharmacist, so it wouldn't matter much whether I graduate with the debt that I expect or around 150% of what I expect. As long as it's under 150%, I would be ok.

Oh I definitely took out loans for undergrad as well... I know a lot of people will say this is stupid but Florida is an expensive place to live and my hometown doesn't have a 4 year college within a 3 hour drive so I couldn't live with family.

I don't regret it either though because I got to attend my dream school and my tuition was paid for... I just needed living expenses... but I also had to work because a part time job or loans alone didn't cover everything. I didn't know right out of high school that I wanted to go to pharmacy school so community college wasn't an option for me and honestly I knew I wanted to go to a university since I was in elementary school so that's just how it went down I guess.

I lived semi comfortably in college... I know how to cook really well and I know to find deals at the store so it wasn't like I was completely broke... also you kind of have to live in a decent apartment complex in Miami to be safe or close to school. I am more broke now that I don't have the loans and stuff from undergrad and on top of that I have to pay for my own tuition and books now for any science pre-reqs I take. I took a class from FIU (the state school in Miami) and it was 800 dollars for one single class. LOL

That's one thing I wish I learned how to do in college. My food budget was one of the things I hacked when I started med school, and now that I'm eating my own cooking a significant part of the time I'm regretting not ever learning to cook.

Upside is I'm spending 55% less on food than I was.

That is one thing I am going to learn how to do before I start pharmacy school. 👍

LOL You can learn I'm sure... This sounds really stupid and nerdy but I learned how to cook by thinking of it as a chemistry lab. I started by looking up recipes online and then making a grocery list with the ingredients and directions... and if you follow it carefully enough it will always come out right. I have honestly never messed up a new recipe because I'm careful and I read everything thouroughly. You just have to be desperate and interested enough to take a little bit of time to do this. One bit of advice I have though is that some recipes online s*ck... you have to look up a few different ones for the same dish and figure out which sound better.

I also started out with easy crap like casseroles with ground beef or sausage, pizza, mashed potatoes with different cheeses or ranch dressing, steak, etc. Then I gradually learned how to make homemade pasta sauces, poached eggs, etc.

Oh yeah... greetings from south Florida.. 40 degrees, pouring rain, and 35 mph wind 👍 BTW it snowed in Ocala this morning.

Speaking of Florida, have you ever been to Sarasota? I knew one girl in undergrad who was from there. She was the only person I knew from Florida too. She seemed really nice and smart too.

Yeah, I am gonna stay in the Chi. All my networks are here. My current boss who may also be a potential business partner in the future is here too. I definitely do not want to lose touch with him.
I'm a little late because I've been busy & not on here for these last two days, but whatever you decided just make sure it's the right decision for you! That's very smart to stay in a place you already know... it can be tough coming from out of state (culture shock, weather, etc) Plus you'll save a bunch rooming&boarding I bet.

Yeah I've been all over the place in Florida but I actually have a 2nd cousin who is a nurse in Sarasota (he's a male nurse so no he's not pretty... haha just messing with you 😉)

Anyway... Sarasota is okay... I've been there a few times because I used to take the ferry from Key West to Ft Myers so I could visit my friend in Tampa and I would stop and spend a few days there because it is on the way. It's retirement central, but it is nice if you like a safe, quiet place. The beach is pretty nice too.

I agree. My school in Miami was something like 53% out of state, so most of the people I knew were from New York and places up there. They wanted to come to a sunny warm climate, which I can understand why this would be attractive, but they would always complain and get really depressed during the end of fall when they realized just how little season change we have. I mean there is virtually zero indication of season change throughout the entire year. It depresses me and I am from here! LOL I love the cold and chilly weather that comes with fall and winter. To me, the ideal place as far as climate is the deep south like north Florida/Georgia because you get the season changes but the weather isn't too severe as far as blizzards and sub zero temperatures.

That's exactly how AZ is. The coldest it gets is 60s/70s (in the midst of winter when it's -30 everywhere else lol).

I'm with you on the weather not being too severe. My poor bones can't handle the cold. I crack in 70 degree weather. And shiver in "cooly" air conditioned rooms.... (shows how thin my skin is I guess 🙂 ).

Okay so I didn't get to tell you all about my experience shadowing the pharmacist.... All I can say is I LOVED IT. There were actually four pharmacists at the place I went and one big pharmacist (but he's the owner so he's really on the business side of things). The front of the store is retail (they make all their own medicines/ pills/ cremes/etc.) Basically the front was the store the back was where they make everything. They have a contract with the hospital, so they also make IV drips and stuff... They're a compounding pharmacy but specifically specializing in natural bio-identical hormones for men and women. All I can say is it was frickin awesome. I really found out what it was like to be a "tech" b/c all the techs were doing pretty much all the work. I can't wait to go back, but the owner told me he can't hire me until I get certified so basically I'm guaranteed a job once I get my certification.... overall AWESOME day... 🙂 I LOVE PHARMACY!!!!

I literally laughed when I read that

I'm sure it's pretty nice. The girl I know from there seemed kinda quiet sometimes. When she hangs out with friends, she talks to them quite a bit, but other than that, she's usually busy studying and working out.

She told me that she used to go to college in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and worked at a bakery around there, and even there she said that she tried to not get involved with all of the drama around her coworkers

Yeah I noticed that right now Arizona is the only semi-normal place in the country. It snowed in Florida this morning and Miami is in the 30's and 40's right now. I'm the opposite though because I love cold weather. Everyone else is wearing huge jackets and pants and boots and scarves over their faces but I still wear shorts and a t shirt if it's in the mid 50's. I will wear pants and maybe boots if it is in the 30's or 40's, but I will only wear a big huge jacket or layers if it is below freezing. I don't get shivery it's weird. If the temp is above 70 I will feel hot usually.

👍👍👍 That's great!

When I shadowed one pharmacist last year, I shadowed him when he was working with two interns (who are now P3 students at my school). Yesterday, the P3 students I talked to said that they would be willing to train me if I wanted to start working as an intern at that store. 🙂

Then I shadowed a bigger retail store in the gift shop of a hospital. I saw a pretty girl with blonde hair working in the front register when I first went to go talk to the pharmacist. Then I came back few days later to start shadowing, and the pretty blonde girl was gone 🙁 Apparently she had gotten fired for whatever reason. I was looking forward to seeing that girl

Anyway, as I was shadowing the pharmacist, I asked a lot of questions and I also talked to the tech who was a nursing student. And she was pretty  I paid attention to her very well whenever she told me something and I just watched what she was doing. Then they had another pharmacist show up, and she talked to me more about pharmacy and what the usual procedure is on filling prescriptions, putting in orders etc. The male pharmacist (who was there first) was busy on the phone talking to insurance companies and delivery guys. The female pharmacist (who showed up later) had more time to talk to me about where I went to school, what my parents do 🙂laugh🙂 and what my past work experiences had been. After that shadowing experience, I was very certain that I wanted to go to pharmacy school.

You, guys, I'm soooooooooooo excited, I'm going to play beer-pong at my friend's house today - screw studying  👍 😍

I used to back in undergrad, but I wasn't really good at it though. I actually think beer is disgusting, so that's why I never liked to play.

it's not the beer... it's the ball... lol don't get me started on playing at someone's house who owns cats complete with a litter box in the living room. throwing balls into cups of beer you drink + bad drunken aim + litter box = :barf:

That's why you keep a cup of water to try to at least wash it off.

Actually, you would need bad aim and poor catching skills together to get the ball to end up in the litter box

I actually had a whole rant written about how dumb I think the magical cup of water is that washes away all things gross but I didn't want to ruin everything for cheb... I'm just making jokes but I'm sure that's not something you wanna hear about right before playing. Lol

I doubt she would look at SDN before playing beer pong. Posting at SDN when you're at a party would be kinda lame :d
