OT: what do you all do for exercise?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm fairly addicted to the 30 Day Shred and, at the very least, I use it 3 times per week. I like to keep it closer to 5 times per week, though. I have a lot of medical-issue-related pain, and working out regularly is the best way that I've found to reduce it, so I really try to fit it into my schedule.

At some point, I may add in some pilates to mix it up, and I've also heard great things about P90X. Don't know if I'm willing to shell out the cash for it, though, when I don't have a place to do pull-ups LOL.

I have a gym membership and try to workout 6 days a week. One day a week is for recovery. The bonus side is, there's some nice scenery so it motivates me to keep going 😉 Not that I'm a creeper about it, I just appreciate the view!

I decided I want to try and get myself to the point where I can run a half marathon. So 2 -3 days a week I do something running related - sprints, long run, and then an outdoor run. One day a week I try to do some other cardio form (elliptical, bike, stairclimber, whatever), and two days a week I do weight lifting (one day is legs, one day is upper body/back). And on one cardio day a week I try to go to Yoga in the evening.

And no, I'm not super sexy. But it allows me to justify the starbucks I pick up after leaving 😉 And it does make me feel healthier and better about myself.

Word to the wise - getting up earlier in the morning might suck, but DEFINITELY easier to get to the gym BEFORE school or work than after. I can't get myself out to the gym after 5 pm without the use of a crowbar, but making it a part of my morning routine (wakeup, care for dogs, go to gym, shower and change at gym, go to work) makes it much easier for me to put it into my schedule!

I'm a pretty unmotivated person when it comes to working out. My SO got me into going to the gym last semester every day, where I did elliptical for 20 minutes and bike for 20 minutes. Then this semester rolled around... with twice as much shadowing as last semester, and more credit hours, I just wasn't into it.

This summer is pretty hectic too, but I just bought some of the Jillian Michaels workouts because I've heard they are fantastic. I haven't tried one out yet, but I did try out the Ab Bootcamp video by Billy Blanks. I only did half of it the first day and it kicked my butt because I have weak legs. Let's just say I have a lot of work to do, and it's my goal to get into a regular workout routine over the summer.

I've got a bum knee, so I need to do things that are low impact. So no running for me. I can jog a lame horse, and that's about it.

That being said, I try to get to the gym 3-4x a week, although i'have been at all this week. I do a lot of ellipticals and bikes, some occasional weight stuff, mostly to keep my knee's strength up.

When I was working at a stable, I felt so great. I was on my feet all day, doing stalls and whatnot, or I was riding 6-7 horses a day. I've put on so much weight since I left there a year ago, and my knee feels so much more unsteady. If only I could find another place that would let me ride for free....

In the nice weather, I'll take the dog for walks or hikes, or down to the beach or something. She needs her exercise too 🙂

Oh hopeful...

If I have a day off I spend it outside! It's so hard to focus on finals now with the weather so nice! I just cannot motivate myself to do a workout in front of a TV.

-I bike as much as I can, in a good week I do 3-4 25 mile rides when I can squeeze them in around work... this is when I'm fit... now is not that time, yet. Also mountain bike and always come home with injuries because I get a little too into it haha Some days I just stick indoors on the trainer.
-Horseback riding, my mare is such a push some days so I spend all my money and take care of her and in turn I get a workout.
-Dog walking, 3 miles everyday with two yorkies. Its the only way to get a terrier to sleep through the day.
-Kayaking in the summer at a lake near my house. I can spend hours paddling, its amazing how the stress just pours out of your body. Also swimming at the lake!

I would run but 1) I had a riding accident that left me with a really loose knee (give me issues with biking sometimes) and 2) I had shin splints a few years ago... and WOW.

Cows have large herd instinct right? They follow the pack leader? So maybe if she ran the other way, she wouldn't have to close the gate.

Think I'm going to hell now.

LOL! Me too...

As for exercise, I just do yoga and pilates. Mostly pilates, because I have a bad back and it's been really helpful in training my body to use my abs instead of my back muscles to do things (mostly lifting). Yoga, because it makes me more limber AND is a huge stress reducer for me. AND chii chan: I play piano to get out of a funk/boredom! I'm glad I'm not the only pre-vet who does that. 😀

🙂

I'm praying I can get access to one since I can't take my Yamaha P-70 across the pond. It worked great for college and all the moving. Piano is a great de-stresser! Hope you can find access to one in London!

I've been playing for 18 years. How long have you been playing?

My horse and my dog are the only exercise I get and let me tell you, running after a 3 year old horse and a 16 week old puppy seems to do just fine. Izzy (my puppy) needs a good hour long walk to get her tired if we dont go to the barn, and Rocky is just starting into training and we have been doing a lot of trot work in order to get him into shape... its putting me back in riding shape for sure.

I am not a big runner, but I do love the elliptical when I get into the gym and rowing... which is few and far between even with it free on campus

About 17 years. 😱 I haven't really ever counted it out before (go me, I used my fingers). I think someone mentioned that they have practice space at RVC somewhere (or in U of London) at my interview. My sister was saying that I'll need to find a piano somewhere and an alumni said "Oh, they have some practice rooms on campus." So I'm hoping they're easy to find and easy to access. Hopefully you can find a practice space too!

I HATE RUNNING - we've just never been friends. I do however love to rollerblade, I can circle OU's campus 3 times and have close to five miles in. Takes me about 45 minutes and it's super fun. I also have a 6ft heavy bag in my back room - somedays, punching the crap out of something is the only thing that will cure what ails you.

I also run to my piano when I need a mental vacation from the books.

Is anyone doing the Avon Walk for breast cancer? I'm doing it in DC this weekend!! its my first time so i'm really looking forward to it! Although, raising $1800 was soooooo much harder than they said! I may not do it again because of this, you aren't allowed to walk unless you raise that much! ridiculous!

All I have to do is subtract 5 every year. 😛 I can't wait until I can say I've been playing for 2 decades. Glad you know you have the opportunity to practice! I might e-mail admissions and see if they know. 😀

I'm not, but one of the people I work with did this one last year. She had trouble getting enough money. But I think she said the money would have to come out of her own pocket because she pledged to walk, even though it was the minimum amount to donate. It is pretty ridiculous though. Have fun this weekend! 🙂

yea their policies are insane! should could have chosen not to walk then she wouldnt have had to finish paying. But once you step foot on the walk you MUST raise the rest of your money whether by more donations or a payment plan out of your own pocket 😱. This doesnt even include the 65$ registration fee that includes all of the costs for the walk (food water, shelter) so this policy is really stupid, we should get to walk no matter what! 😡 But yes, i plan to have fun, thanks! 😀

I hate running, but work requires it. I try to run a minimum of 4 miles every Mon, Wed, and Fri. Fri usually turns out to be 5 plus, depending on how my knees and lower leg stress fractures are feeling. Calisthenics are a pretty good way to quickly burn off some calories - push-ups, sit-ups, crunches (with 5 sec hold), and a few others can quickly exhaust you. A good way to do it is with circuits. You won't know how much you've exercised until the next day. If I don't exercise first thing in the morning, I don't exercise. That means I'm up at 5 AM daily. Ellipticals are ok for your rest days, but they don't keep your heart rate up or require as much muscle input as running, even on the hard settings.

For me it does though. My heart rate was consistently about 170-180 last semester when I was doing it regularly. Probably would be a different story if I had any endurance but it was sufficient for me personally. I also have bad knees so real running is not comfortable, on top of not being fun.

Skiing (November through April)

Swimming outside (February through November)

Rock Climbing & Bouldering ALL THE TIME!!!

amongst other things....

Was reading an article recently that said you burn about 200 calories per hour of sex. That's a pretty good payoff, I think. Should go down to the gym with a sign looking for a workout partner.

I run for my school, its only DIII, but its still pretty fun. During the fall, its a lot because we're suppossed to go to the gym for a half hour of bike or elliptical every morning and then lift. Then, in the afternoon, we do about 5 miles and pyometrics. Its not that bad though because most of my friends run and we usually stay in groups.

In the winter, I'm not motivated enough to work out in the snow.

In the spring, I try to run when I can and I go to the gym when I can get someone to go with me.

Summers mainly long runs.

Has anyone here ever tried fencing? It's a great stress reliever! Prior to this semester, I used that as my form of exercise by being a part of the club here at UTK. However, due to classes conflicting with practice times, I haven't been as involved this semester. I also usually do some biking, and I've been lifting weights lately to add some muscle.

I'm trying to figure out something I can do this summer to get some exercise and have some fun. Doing exercises in my apartment is difficult because I live in a tiny attic with sloped ceilings.

I used to power walk and do a little bit of running a couple of years ago, but I had access to trails that nobody else used. I'm a little self-conscious of running through my neighborhood.

I'd join a gym, but they're expensive... and kind of boring... I'd have to find somebody to go with.

Other than that, I bowl, and because I don't have a car, I walk most places. This summer, I'll be walking 30 minutes to and from work. Whenever I go grocery shopping, I make sure I don't buy too much so that I can carry it home.

I need to find something fun to do...

@HopefulAg: That's part of the current work out plan....that is to say, the only part of the work out plan that's been consistent for the past few years.......😀

@scarcelyheard: I might suggest a small collapsible rolling cart. I have one that's about 2ft in all three dimentions that I used to use to lug a single person's week worth of groceries from the garage to my dorm half way across campus. It comes in very very handy.

I have something very similar to this one.

Nice! I've read plenty of your posts and like your sense of humor. That entry on a work-out page = gold! We should be BFFs...

Durn, I was *this* close to having a groupie.

Think I'm going to hell now.

And, they say if you see your fat self in a picture, it motivates...right? Imagine how motivating that one would be.....holy s##$%, even the cows think i'm one of their own...#*^#@ ...:laugh::laugh:

Maybe instead of a sign, just strap a mattress to your back....get a leg/cardio workout on the way to the gym (presuming you'd have to walk there with said mattress attached) and then, get a workout (or 10) at the gym  😛

Hi guys! i did the avon walk this weekend and wanted to share a photo. i'm too shy to post myself so here is a pic of a crossing guard who is wearing a pink scrub top!!! and hot pink sneakers!! lol he was so cool he was also in the middle of dancing when i took the picture.
Hope you like it!

ps- if my "insert image" doesnt work can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong!! my images always turn up broken and i dont know why!! i usually try to put my photo on imgur and then i add the link in the insert image spot

edit: oh hey! it worked!! YAYYYY i wonder why it has never worked in the past for me!

LOL. Cute. How did the walk go?

I just got done dancing 7 hours today in heels! Plus I performed for the first time (waltz and tango). 😱 Had fun, but my feet hurt so badly that I can't feel my big toes.

it was fun! but ya my feet hurt sooo bad too! i got 4 blisters on them even though i changed my socks half way through!
i cant imagine dancing in heels, i can barely walk in heels now lol i stopped wearing heels after hs and the last time i tried heels on (for interviews) i was SOOO off balance. i think it was because i'm used to putting all my weight on my heel in sneakers and in heels you need to lean yourself forward as you walk. I hope your first performance went well!! 😍

I'm not the kind of person that can just get up and go to the gym. Unless I have a super motivational gym buddy that will practically pull my hair to the gym. lol.

I prefer fun exercises that makes me forget that I am even working out at all. For example, horse back riding (even though I don't have a horse), biking outside preferably in the countryside, dance (latin dance/bellydance), swimming to a destination (not just doing laps all day), kayaking to whereever, fencing or even archery if I ever have the time to start learning that, oh and Crew. I LOVE ROWING.

Once I start classes in the UK, I am joining the Edinburgh Equestrian club. Ill be working out and be with the animals I want to specialize in! Also I love to go hiking and the thought of hiking through the Highlands sounds GREAT! I already bought my dog a hiking backpack. Ill be down for any dog walk through the countryside!

Do you play racquetball or want to take up squash? I'm totally down. I know I saw a squash court on the Pollack Halls map. (My SO would kill me if he found out.) I'm fairly good at motivating myself to go the gym. I fall off the bandwagon sometimes, though.

I hope your first performance went well!! 😍

It did! The partner I had has been dancing with the instructor for years and performed plenty of times. Thank God. I needed a confident partner. Right after we walked off stage he asked if I was shaking or I normally with like that in heels. I was shaking. Even after 18 years of piano, I get the shakes when I'm performing. I didn't mess up though! 😀

Did you pop your blisters yet? That's the only part I like when I get them. Something is oddly satisfying when you can squeeze the goo out of something like with abscesses.

I love hiking and am just getting into running! I've signed up for the nike womens half marathon this october so I've been trying to get into shape-- lately with this humidity and heat it has been a lot harder than anticipated. and I have my first 5k next saturday! :scared:

 yea i did pop them all the same night before i went to sleep. since i had 4...i guess i dont share the same excitement towards popping them as you do lol One was SO BIG, maybe the size of 2 quarters together ughh

good luck marycatherine!!!!!!!!

the 5k reminds me, a friend of mine did this last weekend. Runamuck http://www.runamuckfestival.com/ 5k with mud obstacles involved. it looks like so much fun!!! and there is one in philly so i could do it next yr!! i hate running...but id be up for it if it involved mud lol

wow. so reading this thread had me in downright fits of laughter at work. Pretty sure my coworkers are currently scheming ways to get me admitted to the closest psych ward....funny stuff...

I played a lot of racquetball in Spain although over there its an open court with a gigantic wall but I've done it a couple of times in the uni. Oh memories of getting whacked in the face.

I'd be down for any sport with that bouncy blue ball!

I love squeezing goo outta something! This is going to sound really nasty but when I'm uber bored, I'll check out abscess videos on youtube whether its medical or done at home. I even have this weird fascination with bot flies. However, none on me thank you very much! Yes, I'm a weirdo and a nerd and darn proud of it! *goes off to play Warcraft*

That is awesome you got in to Nike! Did you go through the lottery? I have heard it is a blast so kinda jealous actually. Be sure to enjoy the firemen and jewelry!
I run but unfortunately just screwed up my ITB to the point where it hurts to walk. BOO😡. Training for the San Francisco half in at the end of July right now, or will be when I can run again. For those of you on-runners, what is it that you hate? I guess I just don't get it...

I hate the fact that my bad knee gives out after the third step. It just cant support my whole body on that kind of impact. It buckles when I land and well...just keeps buckling?

Other than that, I love running!

The thread was entertaining. But the video was the best part! Kinda catchy. I think I'll listen again.

You couldn't get me to pop one on someone else though.

Sweet. I totally challenge you. 🙂

That video was great. Is it sad that I actually knew 99% or more of what they were talking about?

ETA: I also think abscesses are really cool. Especially really good ones that have lot of "stuff" in them. The cat bite abscesses can be fun as long as you keep your mouth closed and stand back as much as possible!

Think I'm going to hell now.

I found this and the responses to this comment very hurtful. It made me less excited about meeting my classmates.

In answer to the OP's question I do water aerobics.

Uh oh, you guys are going to the same school.

I'm not sure it would be honest to say that i am sorry that i laughed, it was bad, but we all know it and that's why we all agreed we are going to hell. I can't help laughing at jokes and it's not like we specifically pointed someone out in public. I am sorry that we hurt your feelings though.

But I would like to think that society has progressed on this issue. People dont view obesity the same as they did back in the day. It has become a big problem. I'm not saying that I'm not fat, i am overweight but I am also in shape! I do research on diabetes and obesity and it is really scary how fast this epidemic is spreading. There are enough resources now where people can get help. There are a ton of programs and support...I love watching the biggest loser and i think it is a great show for showing how people can change. If you actually watch this show all the time, you will know that there are also family members of the people on the show who lose the same amount of weight 100% at home. I do blame the people themselves for not trying to change their bad habits. I know there are usually underlying problems but there are a lot of ways to overcome these and get help. The saddest part is seeing the obesity epidemic grow in children!!!!! Parents need to take responsibility for themselves and their kids. and dont even get me started on how much money is spent on morbidly obese people and the illnesses they get later in life. I'm not trying to bash these people, i want to see them get help so they can learn to love life and live life again.

ok rant over

Yay I love running so much! Obviously by my name! I run DIII track right now but throughout vet school I want to start training for 100 km races 🙂
