So, Pfizer says it is considering taking Viagra OTC...

Besides the penchant certain members of SDN have for ED drugs (museabuse, caverject, etc.) ...what are your thoughts on this?

whats the matter? Dont think I can offer a good opinion on this???

Anyway, if it carries the label "do not take with nitrates", it probably shouldn't be OTC. As soon as this drug hits OTC, it will see a marketing boon like never before seen in this country. Every man that has been wanting to try it but too embarassed to ask their doctor, or better yet go to the doctor period will have their hands on it. Im sure women will get in too on the act making sure their man takes it before starting any relations.

Who says the women wouldn't take it too? But I agree with c-ject...the nitrate issue would be one of my main concerns

and teenage boys. "yah man.....all night......" and crap like that.

I'd only support this if all ED drugs went OTC, otherwise it would be a billing nightmare. It sure would be nice not to have to deal with all of the PAs when trying to fill ED drugs. I don't care if you have sex more than six times in 25 days, you'll just have to pony up the cash, man. I guess if the labels were very specific about which drugs are nitrates, then I wouldn't see a problem with it other than a skyrocket in ER visits for priapism.

I have a problem with this. First of all people incorrectly take OTC drugs all the time because they don't read the labels. All it would take is a few men with heart conditions to die because they took Viagra and then took their Nitrate later and it didn't work. I can see the lawsuits now. Personally, I don't think the FDA would ever approve this switch.

Personally, I wish they were OTC for obvious recreational reasons. However, I as a medical professional think the dangers are too significant for abuse by the general population and I agree with the poster above that the FDA will not approve the measure.

I wonder if this is a marketing stunt similar to Walmart's $4 prescriptions. Is the patent on Viagra due to expire soon or something? I imagine it's getting close. Pfizer probably can't come up with an alternative formulation (sustained-release or parenteral anyone?). So Pfizer is trying to find ways to keep the $$ flowing.

"Me too" on "no way it'll happen".

I an alternative formulation (sustained-release or parenteral anyone?).

I think the its oral effectiveness is why viagra is soo popular so i dont understand why a parenteral version would be good. I mean, if i was gonna stab myself to get in the mood, id probably have some sort of fetish and I'd probably use caverject
