Has anyone seen the following disaccharides on a MCAT? Just wondering if I should spend an hour creating a mnemonic for these bad boys for that rare occasion...

Disaccharide Units Bond
Kojibiose two glucose monomers α(1→2) [7]
Nigerose two glucose monomers α(1→3)
Isomaltose two glucose monomers α(1→6)
β,β-Trehalose two glucose monomers β(1→1)β
α,β-Trehalose two glucose monomers α(1→1)β[8]
Sophorose two glucose monomers β(1→2)
Laminaribiose two glucose monomers β(1→3)
Gentiobiose two glucose monomers β(1→6)
Turanose a glucose monomer and a fructose monomer α(1→3)
Maltulose a glucose monomer and a fructose monomer α(1→4)
Palatinose a glucose monomer and a fructose monomer α(1→6)
Gentiobiulose a glucose monomer and a fructose monomer β(1→6)
Mannobiose two mannose monomers either α(1→2), α(1→3), α(1→4), or α(1→6)
Melibiose a galactose monomer and a glucose monomer α(1→6)
Melibiulose a galactose monomer and a fructose monomer α(1→6)
Rutinose a rhamnose monomer and a glucose monomer α(1→6)
Rutinulose a rhamnose monomer and a fructose monomer β(1→6)
Xylobiose two xylopyranose monomers β(1→4)

Uhh doubt you need to memorize those. Questions that had those were pretty easy and gave you the structures. Just know what a structure tells you...

I would only learn that plant saccarides like cellulose etc. have beta 1-4 linkages..we have amylose which is alpha 1,4, glycogen has 1-6 branching, and be able to identify them. I wouldn't go much further into it.

You are wasting your time OP. Why would you even think you need to remember all that.

absolutely not, don't ever even look at these words ever again. If you have the time to memorize this, then you need to spend that time doing other things like going out and hanging with friends, and enjoying life or something.

Better words have never been said.

hey OP if you wanna shoot for dat 45 then you gotta do what you gotta do :p

Never know when a discrete might whip up a Melibiose a galactose monomer and a glucose monomer α(1→6). Lolll

but srsly.......doesn't sound like a great idea.

I love this forum, but as expected, I knew I'd get slack for this. Perhaps I should have rephrased my initial post... Has anyone ever experienced a discrete passage that required additional knowledge beyond the basic dissacharides?

If you're asking about the real MCAT, you're not allowed to ask that and no one is allowed to answer.

I doubt something so detailed would be asked on the MCAT. It might be in a passage, but in that case you would be given all the background info you need.
