Hi all,

I need some input.

My dad (a physician) has been telling me to invest in an otoscope and ophthalmoscope. I’m currently an MS1, and currently don’t need one as the exam rooms all come equipped with them.

Will these become necessary for clinical rotations or is it a waste of money?

***Edit: Or will these become necessary in residency?***

Thank you!

I’ve literally only used mind on standardized patients and my family. You don’t need expensive ones

I’m a pediatrician, the one who would find this MOST useful, and I only recently got one so that I could look in my own kids’ ears.

So no, while you might wish you had one once every 6 months or so, that’s not worth spending the money and lugging it around with you all that time.

Do not buy either. It's a scam perpetrated annually on clueless MS1s in the form of a "package deal" of stethoscope, otoscope, and ophthalmoscope.

Just buy a Littmann stethoscope (any will do).

I’ve never needed one. They’re provided legit everywhere.

Thanks y’all!

I agree with all you’ve said- my dad is just a stubborn man set in his ways but it’s not HIS money that would be spent. 😛

Didn't use either on a real patient until learning how to use an otoscope in real life during a fourth-year FM elective. Never used an ophthalmoscope on a real patient.

Was forced to buy a set including a blood pressure cuff. Haven’t used them in about 3 years
