Does anyone know anything regarding OU-COM. If it is good, bad, or in between. I was thinking of applying there this year and just was curious about their reputation.

I really don't know what the rest of the world thinks about OU-COM, but I do know what I think of the school. I love the school everyone there is great and the region is beautiful. I know a number of doctors that have graduated from there and they all seem to be very intelligent and are great docs. I know an internist, GP, as well as a orthopedic surgeon that are graduates. My biggest piece of advice is to not worry what others say whether it be good or bad about the school and schedule a visit to see for youself.

I've heard from a few students that OU's board scores are low...

According to a member of the OU-COM administration, the 2003 COMLEX 1 first-time pass rate was 94% (for both CPC and PCC combined). That doesn't sound low to me. Let's try to steer away from rumors.

Oh a stduent told me they were much lower. If you notice, Mr. Schriner likes to inflate OU's stats. Yes I applied there, yes I interviewed, yes I withdrew...Oh and I do have a DO friend of mine who teaches for CORE and is amazed at all the unncessary politics at OU.

I am a DO in an allopathic residency, so I don't get many opportunities to see DO students. But from what I can tell, the OU students are certainly on par with the local MD students. I would say they also have a reputation that is positive in the state.
I would hate to grade a school purely on the COMLEX...I think that is a faulty assumption. The COMLEX is a bad test, poorly written despite the validity scores the JAOA spews forth.
I would much rather have a clinically sound student or be part of a medical school with solid hospital rotations and affiliations.
As for their graduates, they are good, as I have worked with many residents.

And nope, I didn't go to OU.

Surprise, agree with DocWagner.

I didn't go to OUCOM, I went to NSUCOM, but one of my fellow EM residents is a graduate of OUCOM. He is probably the sharpest out of all of us.

IT IS NOT THE SCHOOL.

Dont' judge a school based on what you may perceive as a low board pass rate... schools only have 100-150 students... if you have three goombas in the class that brings your pass rate down 2-3%!

Q, DO

In regards to OUCOM, I chose NSUCOM over OUCOM for the fact that I felt that NSUCOM would provide me a better education. What it comes down to really is how much you want to put into it. What you put in the school is what you get. Like Quinn and Wagner, don't judge a school by it's board scores. The COMLEX is apparently a piss poor written exam (heard from many 3rd years) and just because 99% passed doesn't mean they know their nipple from their willy. Pick the school that is the cheapest and fits to your learning style and goals.

Thanks for all the info on this college. I will use all this information in deciding where I want to apply.

Thanks

Before the rumors start that OU-COM has a 38% COMLEX pass rate, let me correct some things here. If you contact the admissions office or student affairs office, I am sure they will provide you with a copy of the NBOME report. John Schriner did not inflate the stats ( and I am very sure that he would be highly upset that someone would imply such a thing). Our pass rate last time out was higher than the DO school average which I believe was in the low 90's. We are very proud of both curricula's strong performances. However, the very important point has already been made that to judge an entire school by COMLEX pass rates is somewhat foolish. We have one of the best programs in medicine (I would argue both DO and MD) for preparing students for clinical experience. Best of luck to the original poster, and please if you're going to attack the academic reputation of an entire institution, at least look at the stats yourself first.
