OUCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i was complete a little after sponk so let's hope i get an interview soon. the people at this school are so friendly.

SNS, I am seeing your name pop up all over the place. I think we've applied to a lot of the same schools, meaning we probably have similar stats. I am sure you'll receive an invite soon!!

Congrats!

Well, I feel like I'm going to be sick right now...I completed my primary and secondary applications and turned in LORS on the verrry first day they were available (I'm an OU alum, and really wanting to go back!). I have a 28 and 3.65 gpa....As I am about to call OU and see whats going on, I decide to "make sure" I didn't screw up on my end...turns out I never sent them my LOR's. Hating myself right now...Just submitted them, what kind of affect do you think this will have on my app? I'm guessing it could end up being a December interview or later, who knows?! it just blows so bad when things like this happen and its your own fault 🙁

This cycle is going very well so far - couldn't ask for any better, minus turning in my LORs a little late. How about you?? I'm from Ohio also.

Congrats!

That is kind of rough. Did this happen with all your schools or just OU? I'm sure other schools will be inviting you for some interviews with those stats, and OU eventually so keep positive. If I were you, I'd call OU on Friday to verify they received your LORs and that your file is complete.

Hello Everyone,

I will be attending OUCOM next fall, I am OOS and not much familiar with the athens area. I would like to start looking at potential housing; does anybody know nice, quiet areas whether close or not that close(less than 10 miles) from OUCOM ?

Thank you

Sponk, it was just OUCOM...just my top choice of all the *realistic* schools i applied to....feeling a little better about it today, I know (hope?) I will eventually get to interview there...good luck with yours!

It seems like the majority of my class ended up at the summit as they heavily recruited med students. Directly across the hill is University courtyard. Apparently both are pretty nice and cater to graduate and medical students, but it's important to note that OU will absolutely not issue you a parking permit if you live witihin 1 mile of campus. This ended up being an issue for people living at the summit as it was about a 20 minute walk down the hill and to campus, and the shuttle service didnt' start until the first week of September, a full month after the start of our classes, and even then, it began at 8 am, which is too late to get you to 8:10 lectures on time.

The school maintains links to a number of off campus housing sources here: http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/saffairs/additional_housing.htm. There's also links to the two papers in town which always have a lot of listings. From what I've seen, you basically want to stay away from the undergrads, and thus stay away from anything downtown. Hope that helped a bit.

I've looked at those places you mentioned above as well as others like carriage hill and monticello village which are located I think more than a mile away from OUCOM. I will definitely continue looking for more places as time goes on and really looking forward for next year. By the way how did the anatomy immersion go ? did the curricular paths get separated yet ?. thanks

Anatomy immersion was a pretty cool deal. It was a nice way to transition into med school and get used to learning a fairly large volume of material. I think they do a great job with immersion. Anatomy could have been much more painful, and I've heard that at some other schools it is. Here, there's a heavy clinical emphasis which helps to put things in context and make all of the information seem a bit more relevant, which hopefully leads to better retention.

The curricula split last week, and while it's not for everyone, I am definitely glad that I went the PCC route. Studying actually doesn't seem like such a chore . . . yet.

Best of luck on the housing search.

Heyy I'm going to OUCOM next fall too! We should start a facebook group or a new thread to get to know each other.

yayy! interview invite for 10/08 today! very happy!:highfive:

Wooooooo congrats!!!! 😉

Are you going to stay with a student???

oh i didn't realize we had the option (my parents got the mail at home). i'll def. take advantage of that opportunity. thanks for telling me about it. 😎

I am currently doing the post bac here and I live at Carriage Hill with a roommate- it's not too bad, but we have a 2- bedroom and one of them is bigger than the other. For the most part it's clean and maintenance is reliable =) Here's their website: http://www.wallickcommunities.com/student-housing/property-detail.asp?pid=43

And here's for Monticello:

Good luck!

I must have lost my OU-COM email. I still have my secondary and evaluation. However, could anyone tell me if there was anything else in the email besides the evaluation and application as far as instructions or guidelines. Thank you so much!!

Nothing else of interest in that email except for maybe this link:

Secondary Information: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/PDFs/sec_information.pdf

I can certainly forward the email on to you if you'd like to see it though. Just private message me your email addy if you want.

Good luck tomorrow stucka!!!!

Thanks, Sponk!! I'll let you all know how it goes when I'm done. I'm staying with a med student, but won't be getting there till about 8pm tonight. I'm wondering if this is the first interview date?

But goodluck everyone else with their interviews! :]

Has anyone who interviewed on the 24th heard back from the admission committee?

How long has it taken people from the time their application is complete to receive an interview invite ( I know it's still early however)

Hey guys,
I have an interview coming up this friday, are any of you invited for that day also?
KB

In case anyone wants to know about interview day, and hasn't read previous year's threads, I'll give a synopsis after my interview on 10/1:

Overall, very laid back day. It's only as stressful as you make it, no one is there to stress you out. OU definitely sells itself very well. The day started at 8ish and ended at 4ish, with 12 of us interviewing. We had a couple intro presentations which were actually interesting, a walking and driving tour, and lunch prior to the first interviews which started at 1.

In the morning, we were all kind of distressed that our interviews were at the end of the day. However, looking back, I like it better that way. You wake up nervous for your interviews, but by the time all the touring is done, you feel pretty comfortable in your surroundings and are able to relax and be yourself. As far as the interviews go, I interviewed with three ladies, a DO, and two PhDs. All three genuinely seemed to want to get to know me in their own way, which was refreshing. There were only a couple surprising questions overall, but mostly just a conversation. Know why you want to be a doctor, why DO, and why OU. Beyond that you can probably answer on the fly – or prepare some using the SDN interview question feedback and you’ll be good.

Hard to read how well I did, but the great news is, if accepted, we find out on Monday! Interview 10/1, find out 10/4. That is unbelievable turnaround time!!! :xf::xf::xf::xf:

Dont forget the delicious veggie lasagna for lunch!! 👍

Haha yea that stuff was amazing!! Based on your initials I am guessing you're the shortest guy that was there? I'm the second shortest guy that was there if that helps 😀 Freaking were some giants that day, average height 6'4" of male interviewees. So if you're tall and you applied to OU, your chances are looking good for an interview.

Good luck tomorrow! I won't be able to check until like 10 P.M. it's going to drive me crazy.

Haha, yes I was "the shortest guy" if you want to categorize me by my height...but as one of the girls there kindly pointed out, all of the girls were smaller than me lol. I was in the top 50 percentile of height on the day. And your clue for yourself didnt help me too much, might you be the one with dark hair...oh wait everyone had dark hair..

Hahaha, well you're still above average height for a guy, otherwise I wouldn't have pointed it out!

I had the longer hair, went to OU for undergrad. Did you get good news? :xf:

Yep that's me 🙂 CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! I received good news too! Are you as excited and relieved as I am?!?

We had a very solid group of people personality wise I thought, could see up to like 10 or even 11 of us getting accepted.

Yes I am pumped, and I felt like we were all very capable future docs, so I wouldnt be surprised to see 10 or 11 either. Weight has been lifted off my shoulders 4sure. I will see you there sometime in the future!!
GL to everyone else!

I'm about 6'2 and my file is complete here so hopefully my chances of scoring at interview are solid haha.

Interview invite in the mail today for 10/29!!! I'm very happy, OUCOM is one of my top choices. I called to make sure I was complete on 10/6, insanely fast!!!

Congratulations and good luck!!! Do you have any other interviews so far?? I am curious what people think about OUCOM relative to other schools they interview at. Anyone with multiple interviews please throw in your 2 cents. 😎

For me so far OUCOM has given the best vibe, which surprised me. Impressed me much more than I expected it to.

Thank you!!! I do have another interview at ATSU-KCOM but it's scheduled for 12/6. I will let you know how it goes though but I won't be able to compare. I am still waiting to hear back from schools though. But, I'd be very happy with attending at OUCOM. I've heard from the interview feedback, that the OUCOM interview is pretty laid back, is that true? How was it doing the interviews with three people after lunch?

Congrats to everyone with acceptances or interviews.

Would you mind sharing your stats?

Mine are: 26P (9V 10BS 7 PS) 3.85 cgpa 3.75 sgpa - OH resident

I'm a little late in the game - just mailed my secondary.

It was very relaxed doing them after lunch. I felt like they were all prepared for me to be there and interested to find out who I was. (opposed to an interview at UT where it felt like I was getting in the way of their afternoons) It was also nice that they helped us find our next interviewer, since being slightly nervous and on a new campus it could be easy to get lost. So basically its just relaxed and a good-informative day in the end.
When I was done with past interviews I had a feeling like i was glad that it was over, but it was more a feeling like that I actually enjoyed my day here. GL!

You should still be fine! Most students I talked to (and the one I stayed with) interviewed after Christmas... so you still will have a great chance.

My mcat is only 24 with gpa of 3.96. Your stats are great, don't stress. Goodluck! It's a long waiting game, but in the end you'll wonder why you wasted so much time worrying! 🙂

Hey guys,

Congrats to all who have been accepted. I might be behind a little; sent my secondary last week and LOR will be sent this week. My stats are 3.63 GPA, 22 MCAT (my low point), and nearly 400 hours of clinical observations, research, and/or volunteering. If there is anyone out there who has similar stats and got in please let me know as I am really really nervous. Thanks guys and good luck to everyone!!!!!

Hey doods you mind telling me what my chances are here? I just sent my LORs and secondary yesterday.

3.5 cGPA
3.48 sGPA
26O MCAT

1000+ hours volunteer work
110 hours clinical experience
Indiana resident (I'm aware this sucks)

A little advice from an insider at OUCOM: If you are an out-of-state applicationt and not familiar or accustomed to the "Appalachian" Culture or similar (as in small town, friendly yet a little backwards mentality), I would think twice about attending this school. On the other hand, if you have lived in Ohio all of your life, this school is definitely for you, especially if you are used to a small-town environment. Actually, you will probably be in love with this school.

The curriculum is integrative and pretty well developed. They definitely throw you in and hope you float and the faculty are pretty helpful.

The school is in the middle of nowhere so my advice is to create a support system quickly. The weather here really is sunnier than the rest of Ohio though.

Everyone here is married, at the ripe ol age of 5, and many go home on the weekends. Some may say this area is liberal, but remember liberal is relative to the rest of Southern Ohio. Again, if you come with a significant other or know others here, you'll love it.

Since you are at a DO school, you will definitely spend lots of time on your osteopathic manipulation skills.

Lastly, if you are a non-traditional student, despite what they may tell you, it's in your best interest to go elsewhere. The undergrad population run the area, but more than anything, your classmates will consist of very nice and outgoing early 20 something crowd with no life experience.

Overall it's a great school if you're a good fit. Since there's no where to retreat, you have to be fit for the school or simply able to suck it up and endure 2 years until you can move around Ohio for your 3rd and 4th years. I would Not advise sucking it up. It's more difficult than you might expect. Good Luck.

Since all my LORs are complete already, I don't have to have that LOR sheet they attached filled out right?

Nope, you do not have to use the LOR sheet. It's just for convenience and a lot of the schools offer it but it is not needed.

You have a chance, did you call in to make sure you were complete yet? They accept 16% of their class from out of state and I've heard they don't even select half the class until the holidays hit. If you're granted an interview, I'd say you have just as good as shot as someone from in-state so don't lose hope.

you guys think it would be crazy if I apply here? i am looking into applying to more schools and my primary is already verified so I would recieve the secondary fairly quickly and submit it asap. My problem (in my mind) is my gpa. although I am from oos also. (nj resident) but I desperately want to practice rural medicine and have great extracurriculars.

mcat 26 (best of both scores) ps 9 vr8 bs 9
highest score was a 25 with a 9 ps 7 vr 9 bs just recieved an 8 on a previous exam.

gpa, 2.94 sci 3.01 cum. retaking 2 classes that will bump my sci up to over a 3.0 by christmas.

extracurriculars are great, work for a doctor that offered me a job after i shadowed them. been doing it for a while as a medical assistant and a variety of other things.

what do you guys think? don't waste my money? or give it a shot for the hell of it?

I'm originally from NJ and have spent some time in Athens for the summer scholars program and now for post bacc. It is a small town and there isn't much to do, but you just have to be able to adapt. I'm used to bigger towns and cities and Athens is far from that, but know what you're there for- they offer a great medical program and you just have to stay focused and make the best out of it 🙂

I was lurking for a while but I decided to post since I just sent in my deposit...

Any word on a facebook group??

This thread has been dead for a while...
I haven't heard anything, but I wish one would get started soon! Does anyone know if OUCOM is going to start the group, or do we start it? Ginny Valentin told me she created it last year, but I'm not sure if she'll do the same this year.

sup guys. I got in a couple of months ago (3.8, 28 mcat) and will be attending this July. Simply, it's the complete package offering a plethora research opportunities which most DO schools don't have. The reason I'm posting is because I am actually looking for housing in the winter and spring quarters so if you know anyone looking for a room mate let me know. Also, if you're in the area let me know and we could meet up!

Additionally, for those of you attending what laptop are you getting? I really want a mac but still need to make sure there's no compatability issues.

Best of luck to everyone else still in the application cycle!
