Hey Gavin,
I am looking to apply at ASHS for the 2005 cycle. I just graduated ASU Anthropology/Italian, while at ASU bought a house right on Recker and Guadalupe (walking distance to the Dental school). I returned to Illinois where my fianc? is finishing her masters degree, and I the proverbial pre-science requirements. I loved it in AZ and can't wait to return, loved Gilbert area. I have a list of schools that I am interested in but Arizona tops my list, I am wondering if you can spare some time and good information on how to get on the right ASHS track as to get in. I REALLY WANT TO MOVE BACK TO AZ! I was looking for insight on DAT, Interviews, Volunteer hours (huge portion at ASHS), Grades, whether you worked in a dental office,etc... as not to be just a receiver and not a giver, if you have any information on the area (can't remember if your from AZ?), what to do, daytrips, eating establishments, anything I lived on reck and guad for 4 years (should of seen it then, all corn fields). I am coming out there on vacation Sept 3rd-Sept. 10th and will probably do a walk-through. I did a walk through before the school opened for the ASU pre-dental club about a year a half ago. Maybe I will see you.
Thanks for your busy time

Bill E.

Here are some stats:
Science:3.36
Under: 3.40
DAT: --
Volunteering: General volunteering about 60-80 hours Boys and Girls clubs of Chicago

Bill,

Your stats give you a far shot at admissions, and assuming you are competitive on the DAT, I think you'll have a great chance of getting an interview. Remember that at ASDOH they don't grant interviews until they have received your DAT scores.

The volunteering/community service is a huge part of the acceptance environment here, so it is a must if you want to have a shot of getting in.

You also have to have leadership qualities and the desire to be a leader in the community where you will eventually set up practice.

Will you have internet access when you are out here visiting? I'd love to meet you and take you around the school when you are here, so PM with a specific date and we can do it during my lunch break.

Our curriculum is difficult, as is testified by the fact that we'll be done with ALL the sciences in 1.5 semesters (not years, but semesters!). It's worth it though, and hopefully the school will turn out some of the best clinicians in the US.

Thanks for the invite and will definitely take you up on that. I will be there Sept. 3rd -- Sept. 10th, but I will give you a PM atleast a few days before heading out. I have a question real quick. How do people do in a Health professions curriculum if they are trying to start a family? My friend is a D.O. from Midwestern Glendale and he said it was stressful but he managed it. Are there any students at ASHS that are older and have families? If so, I would be interested to see what their take is on trying to be a student and a husband or even possibly father. Not in my cards yet but will definitely be married.

Thanks again Gavin,

Good Luck

Bill E.

ASUgrad,

I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in Pubic Health at Northern Illinois University, it is the applied heath science division. I have two semesters under my belt (with a 3.8 G.P.A), and I am a 27 year old husband. I plan on graduating in May 2004 (just before hopefully starting dental school in August 2004). My marriage is in great shape, my wife is graduating with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in December. The program that I am involved in offers classes at night and only interfere with watching bad reality T.V. shows, my wife will watch them without me. We don't talk while watching T.V. anyhow. My advice is that an M.P.H. program is a great opportunity, so go for it. Just remember that your future marriage is very important and to always make time for it.

Good Luck,
Mike

Good post, Mike.

To the original poster: I'll be looking for your PM! We can talk more about the family thing when you are here, if you like. I'm a husband and father of one son, and my wife and I are expecting our second child in April.
