out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well you've officially sold me on utmb. However that fact may not be as appealing to lacrosse...unless there is something she forgot to mention about herself 😛

Haha no no, nothing I forgot. 2:1 though? I think the guy I'm dating would appreciate that. After one of my interviews, I was telling him that there were attractive people there and he just gave me a look... haha

I'm leaving to go out of town in a little bit until Jan. 2... so don't have too many jokes at my expense. Have a Happy New Year and I'll talk to you in 2008 :hardy:

Have a safe happy new year! 🙂

Anyone know what the deadline is for oosers to hold multiple acceptances to texas schools? As all the other rules don't seem to apply to us, I'm wondering if that January deadline doesn't either.

+pissed+ Was it something we said? Lol...take care. Happy New Year's everyone!

Not 100% sure, but I don't think there is one.

I'm back! Did everyone have a good New Years?

It was ok. Spent time with the fam back home. I'm from dfw, so I hope you enjoyed yourself...though the Cotton Bowl is pretty old and dingy. Do you get to continue as a sports med intern, or was that only for the football season?

so has anyone out of state heard back from texas schools in december? or is Jan. 15th actually a day for out of staters too?

Haven't heard anyyyyyything. Hoping Jan 15th and Feb 1st can bring us some good things too, but I'm highly doubting it.

It seems to have been eerily quiet since 10-15 for OOS. At least now schools can't give acceptances to instaters for a month, so you're the only game in town. I wouldn't think 1-15 is of any particular importance for you, but who knows.:luck:

What's up guys, been out of town for a couple days, looks like nothing has changed 🙁

I don't honestly think the fact that prematch is over will affect us, hopefully I'm wrong. I did call a few schools last week and from what they said oosers are completely separate from the instaters. So they'll probably only send out more acceptances as the others withdraw I guess, which apparently if mykudu is right could be never! 👎

Anyone else thinking of saving their match preferences even though it doesn't mean anything?

I did it just because I was scared by that guy who talked to me at UTMB. I figured it can't hurt anyway I guess.

Where areeeeee you guys?

Meh, after you told us you were on Homecoming Court and then promptly left, we had you pegged as a tease.....haha😛. What sport are you interning with for spring? Was my Mo/GW rundown epiphanic, so-so, or total BS?

PSA: Just got back from Walgreens...they have the original, orange-creme, and caramel Cadbury's....mmmmm. Another reason to come to UTMB: we had Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook fame here autographing books at the hosp a couple months back. Unfortunately he was gone before I got out of class🙄.

Personally I'm taking a bit of a break from the sweets after all the holiday fun. I'd hate to be one of those people who need to buy two seats for a plane ticket! 👎

So yeah I just saved my match preferences mostly in response to lacrosse's statement, never heard anyone say that though for oosers. lol, wouldn't it be awesome if we matched somewhere??? 😀

I'm still w/ Football. I've been doing football for 3.5 years... it fits my schedule the best. Plus they gotta keep one oldie w/ football to make sure the newbies don't screw everything up haha.

Your rundown was pretty much along the same lines of what I've been thinking. I talked to a 4th year from GW today and he said downsides are that the 1st and 2nd year schooling isn't as great as he had wished (but he did say 3rd and 4th were great). And he said since it was so expensive, it didn't really allow him to try to match into primary care because he wouldn't make enough to pay back his debt.

Part of me is leaning more towards Missouri. But UTMB combines the things I love from both of the schools. And Rochester... well, it's Rochester 😍

Moderation and metabolism are the keys, my friend. One of the few advantages to being 5'10", 128lbs😉....I have less in common with lacrosse's O-linemen than I do with the toothpicks they used after downing their 3rd turkey at TG.

Did he specify about the 1st two years? Is it unorganized, too harsh, or what? Does he think that most others would agree? What has changed since then? Have you talked to Mo students? Haha, maybe your heart is more into Mo than I thought...one of the dangers in getting advice from strangers on the web🙂.

Debt is a concern for everybody. I can't believe the diff in debt (whatever that turns out to be) between your acceptances will be enough to influence specialty selection. Let's say you ticked off the FA office and graduated with 200k in debt. 200k is the total difference in gross salary between a Peds (lowest paid PC specialty in DC) at the 25th percentile and a general surgery resident over his/her 2 extra years in residency. You could pay nearly all your debt off and have two years of practice building under your belt before the GS is out of diapers. 👍

Oh my gosh you make me want to diet haha. My boyfriend is 5'10'', 138.5 lbs w/ his hockey pants on... and I thought he was skinny haha.

So anyone wanna help me write my Rochester interview essays? Just in case...

1. What interests do you hope to continue or develop as you pursue your medical education at Rochester?

2. Currently, knowing you may change your mind, what medical career pathway (academic, private practice, specialty area) are you considering, and what factors have contributed to your choice?

I have complete writer's block. I like their Medical Education Pathway cause I love TAing and teaching in general... and they have a Latino Outreach Program that goes along w/ the volunteer work I do now. So I figured that would fit the first question... but then it also seems to fit the second as well. And I don't want the essays to sound the same... or maybe I'm just being anal cause I love love love them.

Sorry this is a Texas thread, gotta take that stuff somewhere else 😛

Kidding of course, the questions do seem to overlap, you can work in the factors you mentioned to address them both. Just don't write the essay once and copy it into the second question. Are these questions for an actual interview or secondary app?

They are for the interview. Rochester has a generic secondary that didn't ask anything but just asked for money... and then if they want to give you an interview, you write the 2 essays and they are due a week before the interview. Your interviewers only see your name, your school, the essays, and a list of 4 ECs that you also provide.

No, no...no need to go anorexic on us haha. And just because people lose track of me when I turn sideways doesn't make me a freak🙂. Its all genetics I swear. I'm sure lacrosse has put you right where you're supposed to be. The kudu does, however, approve of your taste in men👍.

We can't help you too much...you'd lose respect for us haha😎. I know its cliche, but just be genuine. When you think about being a physician, what are you doing? There's most of the answer to #2. Sounds like they just want to get a feel for you, and see to what depth you understand and can intelligently discuss the medical profession and its career pathways...iow, do you know what the hell you're getting into? The two programs you mentioned go with #1. I can't see you using them in #2 nearly as effectively.

I love love love them.

Sigh...looks like I need to trot out the weather updates again. Maybe put them in my sig haha.

Tell UTMB to take me and then you can do whatever you want haha... woooo I'm off to go watch my grandma's cataract surgery!

wow, my grandma just got cataract surgery last week! though I wasn't able to go watch. I did get to watch the ophthalmologist laser my dad's eye yesterday for a tear in his retina. For some reason they wouldn't let me get any good views...some mumbojumbo about the hazardous effects of looking into a laser (who knew? 😕)

Yeah I couldn't see much since everything is microscopic. He did let me look in the scope a couple times though... the best thing I saw was right after he took her lens off... her pupil was huge and staring at me haha.

So I have this urge to call UTMB. I figure they can't be busy w/ IS stuff right now... but I feel that it might be the old we've got nothin' new to tell ya.

Also... should I be sending a transcript w/ my fall grades to TMDSAS to update UTMB? Or does this really help?

Hope they both came out ok. Could you tell what the laser looked like? Just curious...sounds interesting. Haha....the ophth program here sent out an email a month or so ago offering half off lasik if you let a resident do it (supervised by an attending, of course). One of the "perks" of med school I guess...didn't do it though.

I suppose you could ask UTMB if they plan on giving anything out before the match if the class falls below 230 again. Don't know about the transcripts...aren't you supposed to do it anyway? Will it help...naaaa.

I say go for it. Personally, I haven't stalked anyone at utmb in at least a month.

As for the laser you'd have to ask my dad for what it looked like eye on, but it was kind of greenish, and came in short pulses. The doctor described it as "welding the the retina" And each laser was in real short pulses overall he got like 250 in about 4 mins.

I work for Examkrackers here in Texas as a regional coordinator and am new to the postion. Can anyone give me any helpful information about med schools here in Texas and on where to post my help wanted ad's for MCAT INSTRUCTORS? thanks so much, Leslie🙂

What kind of info are you looking for? I suppose you've already checked out their sites. If you're looking to recruit medstudents, you might try getting in touch with the respective student services offices. They could probably send out a mass email for you.

Good luck tomorrow dd!!!
:luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

Thanks! 👍

By the way anyone have any rcw or validation date updates? Mine updated today, there is lots of speculation on the other thread, but does it mean anything for us???

Don't you have an interview coming up sometime this month too lacrosse?

Yeah, goodluck man. They usually have good food for lunch...just don't get lost in that place, its huge🙂.

I think rcw is just updates your coursework, etc. Validation happens to everyone that gets an int...don't get too excited, sorry.

I think lacrosse has her U of Roach int in feb.😀

I don't have a validation date yet. And my LMU is still 8/29/07... the day I was verified.

My next interview is 2/11 at Rochester and I'm already super nervous.

Quite frankly, something tells me you're going to get Roch pretty easily. Now, it was a pink elephant, but he's always been a credible source in the past.

Ahhhh don't say that... it will make me more nervous!! :scared:

I called UTMB just now and asked if they would give OOS acceptances after Jan 15th and Joanette of course said they started going out Oct. 15th and that more would be given out as ppl withdrew. Ugh.

That's impossible...you're premed. Oh goodness, I was about to do this practical joke on you where my dad is on the clin faculty at Strong, that I called him a couple of weeks ago and he had succeeded in setting your int up with the dean. Brilliant. I just can't do it:laugh:.

Man that's frustrating. Sorry. Do you know if you have to wait for other OOS to withdraw, or does it matter?

Ok dd. How'd it go. Did you drool at the lustre of Atlantis?🙂

Ok so I don't know if anyone else gets this, but I have a weird period after interviews where the school seems utterly and completely amazing, far out weighing anywhere I have interviewed or possibly ever could. So I may not be able to get an objective answer out for a few days.

But in all seriousness it is a pretty amazing school. They've got all those hospitals, and their tour is like two and a half hours (which kind of blows). Up to this point utmb was in the lead over the other schools I've gone to, but uth is going to give them a run for their money, provided I can get into either of course! 😛

I would have known you were lying since you said Strong was so 90's awhile ago haha. But shoot... I'd interview w/ the dean... I'm apparently better at that (read: GW interview w/ dean)

She didn't say... she just gave me the whole "well we started Oct. 15..." and I secretly wanted to yell "I interviewed in Nov so that doesn't matter to me!!"

Anyways... dd I'm glad you liked UTH!

Glad you liked it. I thought the waterfall thing on the side of MD Anderson?? was kinda neat. Now if we can just get someone to take ya haha.

Hmmm...I'm starting to think those are just fancy voice recordings and not real people answering...haha.

Well, I'm sure your bud Freud would say that probably makes you a more caring and less cynical person than I am haha.

I wonder if you can bug them so much they'll just say, "fine! here's an acceptance get out of my damn hair!" Screw letters of intent, I'm going for sheer annoyance. Let's take turns calling every day starting tomorrow.

And mykudu you can stop by in their admissions office every day to remind them how great an addition to their student body lacrosse and I would be 🙂

Maybe. More likely they'd want you as far away from them as possible, so they'd call up another school on your behalf. Unless they're within budget this month, in which case they'll simply walk over to the TDCJ, pick out the biggest, meanest, most tattooed dude, and offer him cash if he'll take care of a "little problem" down Georgia way. 😀

Bring it on, you don't know how we roll in A-town 🙂 I'll tear scary tattooed guy apart, then I'll treat his injuries and ship him back to Galveston just so they can see how great a doctor I'll be! :meanie:

You'd be perfect here. Dude, you pull that and they'll give you a full-ride and a reserved parking spot haha.

Hey, I love you guys, but I'm not in love with you haha. Believe it or not, it could be worse....you could have this guy answering the phone...http://youtube.com/watch?v=40kccNpb_dk

Pleaaaaaaase myKudu... I'll be your best frienddddddd!

Well, ok. But only if we're BFF and we wear matching T-shirts to that effect.

I like psych, but I don't trust you guys. Something to do with Heather Graham....
