out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
and I just got an email from michigan state stating that I'm still "on hold for an interview." wtf? like I didn't already know that...

Anyone ever see 30 days of night?? It's a pretty crazy movie :scared:

Nope...sounds like I need to though.

What is w/ this lack of postage by kudu? Did you find a real life or something?

Sorry dear. I'll try to remember to take out the trash and be home by a reasonable hour😳. Haha...just been busy trying to plan some things out. Was very close to signing up to volunteer at an archaeological dig site in Tiberius, Israel in March but I just can't make the logistics/money work in time...might try for later.

How'd your first round of tests go? Did you put in the extra blood and sweat to get that C, or did ya slack off and settle for the usual 99.99%...yawn?

Kudu just lost his premed neroutiscism...is that word 😕...

Hey, how 'bout donating that extra chromosome to someone less fortunate.

Besides, a lot of people don't understand the sdn appeal. I actually had to break up with my last girlfriend because she came between me and sdn :meanie:

Hehe...reminds me of a girl a few years ago that had a thing for me. She admitted to having a New Kids on the Block Greatest Hits CD. Well, I just can't be with someone I don't respect.....

Why are mommy and daddy always fighting??

Actually... I got a 92. The test was pretty crazy... there were more F's than A's and more D's than B's and C's. She went over the whole freakin test in class yesterday and it made me think I missed 3 less than she said I did... oh well.

Uhh you must be adopted then cause I would have had you while in the womb.

Israel?? Sweet... I'm jealous. Hope you get to go.

touche 🙂 Though if we're going to get technical, I'm thinking it's more like pre-fertilization...possible even pre-spermatogensis and oogenesis 😉

Who's your daddy?

Uhh you must be adopted then cause I would have had you while in the womb.

Who's your baby daddy? Betta check that birth certificate. Actually you're right, unless....YOU are the stem cell experiment:scared:.

Haha...is that the dev psych class with the new "gotta make 'em respect me" prof?

Israel?? Sweet... I'm jealous. Hope you get to go.

Thanks. Tiberius is a resort city on the Sea of Galilee. The site under excavation is late Roman/Byzantine/early Islamic.

All right, children. I'll use my mom voice here and tell you to play nice.😉

And yes, scary as it seems to me, I am old enough to be your mom, though it would not be a healthy thing. :scared:

But on the bright side... you sound like a pretty cool mom to have. Good thing we aren't going to school together... I'd probably make you become my adopted mom.... and then my real one would get jealous 🙄

I'm always the one to blame...

👍 on the video

Well, I'm NOT old enough to be daddy in this thread thankfully, but it does make me pause a little when I realize they probably first heard of stuff like MAD, MIRV, Glasnost, and Checkpoint Charlie from a movie or worse a history book haha.

And here's a little something for kudu 😉

You are so wrong for that...my eyelid is already starting to twitch.

Thanks! I think my kids would probably disagree with you, though!!

I would consider myself a good mom if I weren't abandoning my children (or so it feels like) to follow my dream. I do have totally great kids though.

Actually, my kids do think I'm a much cooler mom than my mom is (and she is very involved - read "too involved" in their lives!)😉

Hey now... there is still a chance you could be in SA! And if you're not, I think they will understand. Sometimes I feel like I'm abandoning my mom haha (read: she still cries everytime I go back to school... its so cute)

Okay so I just got home from teaching... longest lab ever today... but after one of the groups finished, they were showing me this stuff on youtube and I just had to share this one because for some reason I thought it was hilarious:

As opposed to this guy froma local station back home..

haha... oh so I forgot to mention, kudu, for my Genetics and Society class, we had to write a paper about research on prisoners and one of the places mentioned in an article I had to read was UTMB... they talked about the unethical and abusive practices done there... just what were you all doing in that prison hospital of yours??

Interesting...do you have a link?

Interesting...do you have a link?

It's actually a tidbit from the book Medical Apartheid by Harriet Washington... it didn't go much into detail, but rather mentioned it and talked only a little bit about it to further an argument.

"In July 2000, the Office of Human Research Protections suspended 300 studies by the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, including Zwishenberger's, after the researchers flouted federal regulations. 195 of these studies, mostly HIV and AIDS trials, were conducted in Texas prisons, according to the Austin American-Statesman. In a Sept. 14, 2000, letter, the OHRP listed numerous UTMB research projects conducted outside of the permissible cateogories for prison research and cited "scant evidence" that Galveston's institutional review board had adhered to federal law."

Thanks. How's the Judgement class coming, have'nt said much about that one...and is your experiment humming now?

You know what's funny is on my tour, my guide brought up the prison hospital, and was like "yeah it's great you get to do things to patients there that you couldn't do to normal patients!" He seemed to realize he said something a little off and tried to backtrack, but now I see the truth.

I've heard the same:meanie:

It's not bad... right now we are discussing the Trolley Experiment. I dunno if you've heard of it, but people are given the situation where there is a trolley track that forks off in 2 different directions. It is headed for the track that has 5 people standing on it as opposed to the track that has 1 person. People are asked if they would flip a switch that would divert the trolley to kill the one person instead of killing the 5. Then, the situation changes... there is only 1 track that has 5 people on it. You are on a bridge above the track w/ another person. If you push the person off the bridge into the oncoming trolley, you would save the 5 people. 90% of people surveyed said they would flip the switch, but only 10% said they would push the person.

So we are taking a look at different research that describes how we make decisions like this with moral rationalization. This is a website that does a moral rationalization test that is pretty cool:
moral.wjh.harvard.edu/index2.html

My experiment... hah. My last 3D plate I made was contaminated via my graduate student. Out of the 32 wells in the plate, only 8 were viable. He was like well you can go ahead and do the procedure on those 8... and I was like no way, that's not enough, I'm not wasting 5 days on that. So today I had to make a new 3D plate and I will be putting cells on it tomorrow and hopefully he will not touch it this time...

You guys should put that in the brochure. Not only are we right next to the beach, but we'll let first year students perform minor surgery on prison patients! 👍

Haha...they actually do use it as a recruitment tool. I was reading a campus article that said about 25% of our teaching cases are prisoners...they like them because of the amount/scope of the pathology involved.

Yeah I think I vaguely remember the trolley. Not bad? Not as cool as you thought it'd be? I'll take that test a little later.

Uhhh...why did he touch it? Is it that easy to contaminate accidentally? That would be very frustrating.

Not bad as in I didn't know what to expect from it... but, it's much better than the other Psych senior capstones would have been. And, I love my professor... it's the 3rd time I've had her.

He "touched" it indirectly I guess. He and I used to share an incubator (he doesn't do cell cultures anymore because he is in his "writing phase"... meaning I have to do them all) and he had this one dish that had a little crack in it so it becomes easier to contaminate w/ stuff that may be floating around in the incubator. I guess when he was "feeding" the cells w/ new liquid media, he wasn't being too careful about switching pipets and so he got the contaminated old liquid he was drawing off of the cells into the bottle of media we use to feed the cells. So this contaminated some of my stuff because he had me use his cells in addition to my own. I've saved the media by filtering it and running antibiotics through it... couldn't save the cells. And yes, I am frustrated.

page 3??

c'mon guys! you can do better!

You're right...

***Holds head down in shame*** We have no one to blame but ourselves....

...though personally I think most of that blame goes to lacrosse, not even sure why 😛 :meanie:

Sure... blame the one that is actually still in school and has 3 jobs... yeah you're right, I should have all the time in the world to post! 🙄

P.S. I've always wanted to use that little BS smiley... thanks for giving me the chance!

I'm glad you agree... 👍

Always glad to help also.

Well I had another two job interviews and had to go pee in a cup 😳 so there...

I think one of these should stick, I liked them and at least they're in a lab, mind you it's not medical school, but it'll pay the bills I guess 🙄

haha I am actually in class right now.

When you peed in the cup, did someone have to go in there w/ you and was the water in the toilet blue? That happens when people interview where my dad works. When we do athlete drug tests, someone from the testing company goes in there w/ the person and literally watches them pee. Modesty is not an option.

haha paying bills w/ jobs... that concept apparently hasn't resonated w/ me yet... 3 jobs, $250 bucks a month and the one that takes the most time doesn't even pay me .... 🙁

Yeah I did the whole lab assitant, research assitant b.s. back in the day, in addition to my fun time at wal-mart 🙄 The lab assisting was ridicules, $6.50 /hr and the research was given to me in two week clumps, and when I did the math with how much work I was doing was like $3/hr. 😱 Such is the life of students.

Well I got my privacy, which is good cause the guy there weirded me out a bit. Yeah the water was blue, and he was real adamant about not flushing the toilet, is there a reason for that?

No flushing afterwards? Yeah... they wanna make sure you don't throw something in the toilet and try to get rid of it that way.

haha, oh I just thought they were conserving water because of the drought

Haha I just had to pee in a cup too. In addition to turning off the automatic flush, they turned off the water to the faucet, which is incredibly gross to think about when you're opening the door to get out. :barf:

Haha...I'm guessing you got an LOR from her. You outta be able to finagle something out of that grad student. They owe you lunch at least haha.

So sorry I missed the "protocols of pissing" conversation. That's almost as interesting as watching stem cells grow for free...oh, oops. Well, whatever kindles your menorah.

Hope one of these works for you dd. Though with your luck, that lab's probably working on ways to purify meth or something.

I actually didn't... but I thought about it. Had another psych LOR already though.

Sweet menorah comment... was that aimed towards my jewishness? 😀

 Would make for an interesting personal statement, if it only it weren't for those pesky dangers... I'd probably do something like this...

how did people every live without youtube??? 😛

Verrrrry perceptive.

See, now why couldn't my chem labs have been like that, instead of slaving away for four hours each week in org just to bluff, pray, and alchemize my way to .0004 grams of white or yellowish-white powder. Oh right, excuuuuuse me, they're "crystals".🙄 Pyrotechnics...that's where its at.

Verrrrry perceptive.

haha I couldn't remember if my jewishness was something we had discussed. Passover this year starts the night after my 22nd birthday... guess I can only eat cake on my birthday and then none for 8 days. It was bad when I was little and Passover fell on my birthday... I remember my friends eating cake and me sitting there watching

you're right. i changed my calendar over to march already and was looking at that. haha

haha at first you got me worried... I was like wait, I swear I just saw them talk about leap day on the Today show... am I dreaming??

I didn't need another weird dream like that... I had a dream about walking across campus to go take my MCAT and then my mom called me to tell me good luck... then when I woke up I was like oh thank goodness haha

Yeah I had a dream that I was falling into a bottomless pit known as the medical school application process. Unfortunately when I woke up I didn't stop falling 😱

Happy leap day! :hardy::hardy:

The kudu is back! Now, is that a Greater Kudu or a Lesser Kudu? My son could tell you, but I can't.

Some day I'll find myself an avatar...or maybe someone should find me one and send it to me.🙄
