out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A few days after that I looked outside, and what did I see on the roof of the porch but THE CAT FOOD BAG!!!😱 It seems some raccoons took off with the entire bag and carried to the roof for their eating enjoyment.

Worthless cats! Couldn't even defend their territory!

Haha...don't be to hard on them. Many a cat has been taken out by a raccoon. So how'd the remodelling turn out?

hah so when she said "generic number"... she meant it. A 1st year went into the office today to ask for me and apparently it's b/w 200-300. Le sigh.

Ah c'mon, it was probably the same lady haha. That would really suck if true though. Waitng till FA comes out on GWU, or have ya already dropped that sucker?

haha I've actually been talking to her for awhile on here. She was fortunate enough to have numerous acceptances... and when I say numerous, I mean 10+.

Whoa. She's going to be one of those people that drops out and writes books on how to get into med school....you wait and see.

Ok, but these were the same cats who allowed a squirrell and their mother cat (who was feral) to live in our house for 3 weeks without telling us...oh, and one of the cats was tormented by a mocking bird for 4 years.

The remodelling is going slowly. We've at least now decided what we're going to do! We got sidetracked, as my daughter decided she wanted to take down the play structure in the backyard this week, so she and I have been doing that. She got braces on Wednesday, so she's been sore and sullen, unless you give her power tools!

I emailed and USPSed my LOI and update letter to the dean yesterday... he emailed me back this morning congratulating me on Phi Beta Kappa (meaning he actually read it haha). He said depending on people withdrawing, they will go to their waitlist in late April and that I'm high on the list (even though everyone thinks its unranked) and he hopes an offer comes my way.

Ahhhh he's making me hopeful again.

I dunno if FA will actually come from GW until after May 15th... they are super slow. Looks like Mizzou though.

cpa2md... hope you're giving your daughter lots of milkshakes!

Wow, that's nice, but I bet you were squirming in your chair reading it haha. Hopefully he was being accurate, something that is lacking all too often in this process.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they told me jokingly to just stay home and eat a bucket of sherbet....and that's exactly what I did. Lime and orange swirl, if I recall...mmmmm.

Man I can't believe how many people in that Lotto thread would take med school over $100 mil. Didn't think I'd be in the minority on that one. Wow.

Haven't looked at the thread... kinda surprised as well though.

I love it when people actually read what you've written and respond appropriately! Generic answers just don't cut it at this point!!!

Yes, she has gotten at least one milkshake per day, with a spoon. Sucking on the straw hurts her two front teeth!

We're planning a trip up there the third weekend of April. I've been in touch with a realtor, and have my financing lined up for my tiny little house, so it will be a go!

I've offered her regular ice cream, but she said it hurts too much to bite it!! I love sherbet - orange with vanilla ice cream...😀

My experience (and I do have experience in this one!) is truly that people who make a ton of money do well, but their kids are worthless. The third generation sometimes attempts to redeem themselves, but it is truly not worth it! There are actually support groups for people who have won the lottery - many people say it has ruined their lives. I'd like the opportunity to find out, but I would absolutely stil go to medical school, get some experience, and do medical missions and the like. 🙂

Haha yeah I'd like the opportunity to see what makes people so miserable after winning the lottery as well. If I was able I'd probably take some time off, spend some money, vacation etc, then go to med school. Definitely wouldn't give up the medical career though!

I know.. he's the nicest man!

Aw man... I remember those days, I was in 6th grade. I remember we went to Steak and Shake after I got mine, and for some reason, my parents thought I could eat a burger. I have not eaten a burger since that day  But I do love my teeth now!

Yeah... I'd love to open some free clinics w/ all that money.

She's in 6th as well.

My mother had the audacity to serve PORK CHOPS the day I got my braces!😱 I haven't let her live that one down!😉

You win. 😀

Well, I would guess at least part of that is because people making a lot of money are spending a lot of time doing it instead of being with their kids....ie people like doctors haha. With the lotto you could spend as much time with your family as you wanted. There are always people who manage to screw something up somehow, even lots of money. If you look at money and just see cars, houses, jewelry, and chicks, you will ultimately be unsatisfied and a superficial person. But if you see freedom, security, opened doors...nah. I'd love to become an investor and get heavily involved with philanthropic work. Bring clean water and energy to villages or something. Write the great American novel, set my parents up for good, ski every mountain from here to the Alps, etc.

You’re a better man than I am. I don’t think there’s any way I could go through a decade of medical training, with all the hardships and hoops involved, knowing that there’s $100 mil in my bank account. Just sitting there. Calling me from afar.

I would assume at least a moderate amount of studying 🙂

So what is everyone doing for their summer? It's fast approaching. I'm probably going to end up quitting my job in July (provided I last the next 3 months of course!) and try taking a vacation in a very nice beachy area.

Blue, eh? Very cool.

I have no idea... but would like some! My family wanted to go to Italy (since I have been talking about wanting to go there for forever), but it would be super expensive w/ the whole value of the dollar thing. Maybe Hawaii then? I've never been.

Other than that... I'd love to take some cooking classes here. My mom wants me to take a self-defense class... which at first I thought it was lame, but now I'm like sweet, I could beat people up.

I'm still really debating about the job thing... I mean honestly, who would take me for like 1.5 months at the most?

Oh, and dd, my "last spring break of undergrad" is over 👎

haha, thanks I liked it too 🙂

Well your last spring break is over, but fortunately you still have your last summer break. Better make it worth while! I suppose you have that summer after MS1, but don't most people do research or something? I swear I'm feeling more and more like a grown up every day 🙁

My mom was talking about the summer b/w MS1 and MS2 and how I could come home and blah blah blah... I was like haha I remember at Galveston, my tour guide was like yeah, you "get the summer off", read: you get an email saying 95% of your classmates are getting involved in research/service this summer, what about you?

I wouldn't mind doing some research. haha super weird for me to say that... before I started in my lab about a year and a half ago, I never thought I'd be doing research.

I swear I'm feeling more and more like a grown up every day 🙁

P.S. That reminded me of this...

"Chancho, when you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. Is for fun."

(Please tell me you know where this is from)

Why Nacho Libre of course! 🙂

I'm down with the stretchy pants quite yet....

I was sort of the same way. My first year all I could think about was how horrible research was, but I got involved with a project my last year and found that I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Granted it didn't draw me enough to make me run out and apply for md/phd programs, but I think some day I may want to do some type of research. Just need to find something I find interesting.

I hear you... freshman year I was trying to check out research because I thought I should at least give it a shot. I was a biochem major at the time (switched to just bio soph year since I added Psych as a double... biochem is in our Ag school and psych is arts and science, so it woulda been too complicated for gen eds) so I found a lab that did biochem/genetics. I went to check it out... "so in this lab, we research on corn... we count the kernels and find different anomalies!!" Oh... wow... yeah right.

So I didn't wanna give up yet, and I found a lab that did stuff w/ breast cancer. The guy was explaining it to me, and he was the most boring man I had ever met... and I must have had the most blank expression because he even said "You look bored"

I didn't try again... but just kinda fell into the stem cell research since the PI was my phys prof. I'm kinda thinking I'm done w/ bench work though, I'd love to do something clinical.

Yeah it sort of tough finding a good research project in undergrad. I just ended up going with a prof I really liked and picked up on his research which luckily ended up being interesting. It was a lot of bench work though, so I too am ready to work in something where I can experiment on people :meanie:

It's been sort of lonely around here lately 🙁 Not that I don't enjoy your company lacrosse 😛

I know... what the heck Kudu? (said in the voice of Elliott Reid... "what the heck Kersh??"... yeah...)

2 of my roommates just got back... they are tan. I am not.

I'm bored too... I just finished my study guide for my test I have Thurs and I don't feel like doing anymore w/ it... my boyfriend is writing a paper... one of my roommates is doing homework and the other is here w/ her bf. Blah.

Do you even tan? :meanie:

haha, yeah I've been riding the boring train a bit myself this sunday night. Though I decided to invest in call of duty pretty recently which helps in that regard. It's a great stress reliever as well 👍

Just remember what your mama told you (or should have)...any amount of additional color in your skin is DAMAGE to your skin. You will thank me later!😉

(Spoken by someone who had her fair share of sunburns and tans as a youngster and is starting to see the effects, and has a brother who had a melanoma removed a couple of years ago.)

Staying w/ my theme of TV shows for the night... "How rude...." said like Michelle Tanner on Full House.

haha I just went to walmart w/ my friend to get groceries/kill time. And it made me think of you.

Yes yes, I know. I'm fairly light... I'm not like a ton of my friends that go tanning a ton. Thank you my surrogate mom 😀

Is it my imagination or am I sensing a possible Derm residency in your future? 😉

Time to break out the magic 8-ball...

Awww we're cute...

...or creepy. Either one.

Lol, there is fine line between cute and creepy on sdn.

For all of you who have checked out the schools in TX...which has the lowest cost of living? I was looking online last night as saw that you can get a new house in Houston (within 10 miles of UTH) for like $150k. 😱 I'm from San Diego, where that would buy you, well, absolutely nothing. As far as the cities where the med schools are, which has the lowest cost of living?

I'm just guessing, but seemed like living in temple (a&m) was probably the cheapest.

Thanks. Another question (sorry if it's been asked before). I know that if you get a $1000 competitive scholarship you will be considered a resident for tuition purposes after your first year. Do pretty much all OOS students get this? And is this true for Baylor as well?

I believe that to be the case for Baylor (but can't swear to it).

I'm going to be going to A&M in Temple, and I'll be buying myself a cute little house there, 1/2 mile or less from S&W, probably a 2/1/1, <1000 sf (the $650k San Diego-type house) for between $60k and $70k. Definitely qualifies as cheap. Oh, and parking is FREE! 😀 If only it weren't 140 miles from my real house...

I don't know that it's true for Baylor, otherwise people wouldn't be buying condos and the like to get IS tuition.

We will be buying a place regardless of where I go, but I thought that your residency status stays the same? As in if you move there for school, you can't become in-state for tuition? If I'm wrong then that's great.

Once you own property for a year, you can claim residency status.

Also, if you have a spouse that works, once they work for a year, they can claim residency status. You can then claim to be a resident based on their status. I'm pretty sure this works, though I don't know how many people do it. I'm guessing there aren't a ton of married folks in school.

Well, since you asked...anyone here who has gotten in to a TX school want to read/comment on my TMDSAS PS when it's done? 😀

So Kudu, what are you doing to keep yourself busy these days (other than skiing?)

Right now I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to live. I like my apt ok, but there are other possibilities I'm curious about. Efficiency downtown in one of those nice old buildings that's been converted to lofts. There's also a Victorian with 4 rooms being rented out. Oh, and a sweet 4th floor condo on the ocean…3bd for 1200, but I'd have to get 2 other roommates *cough*🙄 *cough* to afford that.

This weekend I'm gonna get certified to sail boats up to 20-30 ft.🙂

I would assume at least a moderate amount of studying 🙂

Nah, cpa knows I took an LOA last year.

Not sure, but I've got a list of things. Was thinking about a trip to Europe or NYC or something, but its looking like that might not be the smartest thing financially. Toying with looking at doing some research…if you guys have any tips for finding good research, or the pitfalls thereof, do share.

I know... what the heck Kudu?

Nag, nag. BTW, glad that you dropped the mykudu habit.

Yes yes, I know. I'm fairly light... I'm not like a ton of my friends that go tanning a ton. Thank you my surrogate mom 😀

I never really got the tanning bed thing. My sister is a poster child for the Emerald Isle… red hair, blue eyes, very light complexion, and burns to a crisp in about 30 seconds haha.

You know as the only person I've ever known to play lacrosse any time I see something related to it, it reminds me of you 😛

Comparatively, they're all pretty cheap...Houston is prob the most expensive.

Well, since you asked...anyone here who has gotten in to a TX school want to read/comment on my TMDSAS PS when it's done? 😀

We're a very friendly thread here....I'm sure we can help.

I thought it was during your first year, provided you get the scholarship. I'll hopefully be finding out first hand here in the next month or so. 🙂

You won't find a friendlier thread on sdn 👍

Most of us can help, we all got into texas schools...well except for lacrosse :meanie:

  oh god, I'm kidding, couldn't resist...

Texas application:
"Why do you want to go to school in Texas?"

My answer:
"All of the SDN folks going there are so nice!"

Haha...

Tell them you really want to ride a horse to school every day 👍

I swear when after I moved to georgia, and would tell people I lived in texas they would always say, "so did you ride a cow instead of drive a car?" then laugh idiotically.

i was watching an episode of ugly betty the other day and they had this character from texas.

he was this surly dude that drank shots and worked on a cattle farm. he kept making references to coyotes, roadrunners, and armadillos.

i just kept thinking to myself that this is why people think we're weird.

P.S. the only one of those animals that i've ever seen in real life is the cow and it was at a petting zoo. oh wait, my school mascot was a cow too. :meanie:
