out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha yes I know, I have a ridiculously large smile... I'm just a happy kid, okay????

And I like my white teeth. So there.😛

I see a Crest commercial in your future 😉

Alright kids I'm off. Have a good night. Thanks for all the productive advice on the pre-entry program, glad we didn't veer off topic or anything 🙄

I actually really want to be in one... but apparently you have to have an agent to get into a commercial... and I'm not forkin' over the money for that one.

Veer off?? Never... all we do is talk about OOS for TX schools. And that's it.

Man, I'm gone for a few hours, and...wow...do I feel left out!

Aggiesarah would be a great person to ask about the UTH pre-matriculation thing. Or Diana. She seems to know all things UTH.

I know Diana's name, and Sarah's name, and three others, but that's about it on sdn. I just think of you guys as lacrosse, dd, and kudu. And I'm cpa. 🙁 So lame.

Man! You guys did 5 posts while I was reading this evening's posts, even. (is that a palindrome?)

I didn't buy into the whole "applications" craze. At least I have recent pictures!

Sorry, not really a huge photo person, seeing as how I don't have $3000 to get a camera with enough megapixels to pick me up😀, and I care even less about uploading them to fb haha. Not that your "portfolio" is extensive, mind you.

I'm kidding, I'm just jealous of her winning smile 👍

ooookay.

Lacrosse....coming to a dental brochure near you.

Not just cpa... also surrogate mom! Don't forget that one 😀

And apparentely, if you click on my profile picture to see all the profile pictures I've had in the past, I look exactly the same cause of my huge smile

That's right...scare me.😱 Remind me again of how old I am going into all of this!! Yes, scary as it seems (at least to me), I am technically old enough to be your mother. Yikes!!

That's ok, though. At least I'm not a grandma... (I know people my age who are!)

Shhh everyone, cpa's coming....

Haha...I'm Chris, if you prefer. It's not like I'm too anonymous after 4 years on sdn...

You'd be super young mom then... And don't worry, Kudu is pretty old.

Zing!

okay now that you've said your name... I was going to tell you that I really wish your last name was Hanson... cause that would go along w/ the whole child predator theme.

You're right. I hadn't looked at the Zulu-slayer's profile in a while. I'm only old enough to be his big sister. 😉 Definitely NOT his mom!

If I'd gotten pregnant in high school like SOME girls did...still not the zulu-slayer, but some of you other pups! But I was a good girl.🙄

Oh get used to it, you will feel old sometimes....because it really is true that its the people you're around that determine how old you are...see 39's comment below.🙁

Harumph...I guess that makes me big brother....

Hmmm...first you complained about not enough pictures on my fb, now you wish I had some freak's last name. Do child molesters turn you on or something? Maybe I should be worried about you hehe.

That's one thing I like about the idea of geriatrics. I'll always be the pup!😎

haha I guess you've never seen the show To Catch a Predator on MSNBC. The host is Chris Hanson. And he's hilarious.

Well at least you looked at it...I never get comments, and please no charity ones either. Zulu-slayer...me likey. The best our all-star could come up with was mykudu🙄.

Haha nope...never really had the urge to catch one...or watch one being caught.

Alright ladies, I'm way past my posting quota....see ya'll tomorrow. Now where's that geritol.....

Wow, this must be some sort of record for the number of off topic posts in a thread...

Yeah it was a pretty funny show...though I don't think it was suppose to be. I felt bad for a lot of the guys on there, but it was like watching a train wreck you just can't look away 😛 I think they got in trouble with legal stuff, which is why it isn't on anymore.

I loved how the cops had their guns out and would tackle the guys when they left the house!

Haha, yeah lacrosse is right, just browse through the thread to witness the magnitude of our ADD. Though I'll be honest I think I got 6 or 7 useful posts out of them this time around before we swung out on a facebook, toothpaste commercial, child predator, sdn family tangent 😉

Off to work

Well, I'm off to the Metro Health Clinic this morning to get some shots.😱

I'm going for the TdaP and the first of the Hep A/B series. I have to get a titer (from somewhere) for chicken pox and MMR, or else I have to shell out a bunch of money and get those, too!

It should be fun! Have a great day!!

You know, something seemed really familiar about 39's pics, but I couldn't place it. Then it hit later on....

I think Orbit might have a petty high nickname coefficient for you ....haha.

haha yes! that was like one of the best parts... he would say alright just don't do it again, the dude would leave, and BAM! I also loved whenever he would say "Well I've got the transcript right here...". He sounded hilarious reading those things.

oooo don't be scared! You've never had the chicken pox? Crazy.

Hope it went okay!

First of all... her smile is fake. I know this because of the Facial Action Coding System... which is on my developmental psych test today 👎

And I can't be her... I don't have a cool accent.

Oh, I had the chicken pox, I just don't have any PROOF I had them. My daughter had them in September...I'm going to make absolutely certain it is in her records.

It hurt, but I'm ok...

Sounds like you deserve some orange sherbet mixed w/ vanilla ice cream 😀

I need the all the shots too! Where are you guys going to get them? I'm fairly certain my insurance expired pretty recently, and don't want to shell out a crap load of money!

I got them from the city health clinic. They still weren't cheap. The combo Hepititis A/B was $65, the TDaP was $50, plus I had to pay $15 for the pleasure of the visit. The Hep A/B is a three-shot series, so that's another $80 x 2. I still have to get the titer, or pay another $150 for the MMR and varivax. I also still have to do the tb skin test (I think it is only $15).

It is my understanding that insurance will not cover adult immunizations, and it adds up quickly!

Hint from Heloise: If you go to the prematric program, see if the school's clinic will do it...mine were cheap, and the records are probably going to them anyway.

Can you get A&M to do them? The crappy thing about the Hep series is that if it doesn't take, my understanding is that you have to do it all over again... BTW, I didn't need proof that I had chicken pox, just had to provide an approximate age/date when I had had it.

:luck: on the test 39er.

:luck: on the test 39er.

Thank you for the luck. I think it went pretty well... it was a lot easier than the 1st test. There was really only 1 question I felt wishy-washy on... so we'll see how good I am at predicting performance.

I need to figure out the shot thing too... dunno what I need/don't need.

So my pictures didn't turn out for my 3D stuff which is sad, but expected. The 3D stuff on plastic is just so touchy. I'm starting to write my part for the manuscript though! Super exciting.

I did some investigating, it doesn't appear to be much cheaper around here. I have records of my mmr, tetanus and a few others, but never had hep b, or the chicken pox thing. I did have the pox, so I'll have to see if I can by-pass that one or not.

Hint from Heloise: If you go to the prematric program, see if the school's clinic will do it...mine were cheap, and the records are probably going to them anyway.

I wasn't sure if I would need them before the program or not. I'll have to look into it. And on a related note, i went ahead and mailed in the app and the schoalrship request. If I get the money I'll probably do it, if not I won't. We'll see...

so glad i lost my vaccination record before peace corps. got every single vaccination up to date and for free from the government.

i have some cool ones too like rabies and yellow fever.👍

I've got one for japanese encephalitis...beat that!

Shouldn't. You need them to deal will patients/work in hosp...doubt they'll have you doing that in prematric, and UTMB didn't expect me to have the Hep series completed by matriculation anyway.

Pick up line for/from an ID doc? 😕

Uh, my blood is a vaccine. Everything from Kuru to Ebola rends its DNA/RNA within 10 yards of me. Its the microscopic equivalent of pooing their pants. *Sniff*

You sound like my gf. She claims she is naturally immune to the flu (since she's never gotten it and never had a flu shot) and that some drug company needs to use her blood as the vaccine...

So I just emailed the GW office of admissions and withdrew my acceptance... naturally I checked my Mizzou emails to make sure I really was accepted there

Hope I just made someone happy 🙂

Well that stinks. How long is your scroll of knowledge going to be? Add a little suspense and a love story and it might get top billing. Kudos though...any surprising results? Anything make ya'll go "What the huh?"

Wow, I wish. If there's ever a nasty pandemic of bird or Spanish flu, she'll look at us coughing our heads off, shake her head, and just go back to eating rusty nails for breakfast.

And so the die is cast...

well, as of now, that's what i want to be.

Haha that fits. ID was really interesting to me, especially after reading all those books...The Coming Plague, The Hot Zone, etc. that came out after hemorrhagic fevers became sexy in the '90's. Now, I think I'd only do it if I knew I was going to focus on international health...the bugs just don't seem as clinically interesting here, though that might change.

Believe me you did. I'd like to kiss the person's spot I got! Regardless of gender  haha, well regardless of gender as long as they're a hot chic 😉

Aren't they finishing up some sort of big deal ID building or lab at utmb? I thought I remembered someone showing us something at the interview

Yeah I remember that too... cause I definitely thought of The Hot Zone (awesome book Kudu... good call) when they talked about it.

Oh yeah... Kudu...

...Sixteen Candles is on!

i love pathogens!! have you ever read Virus Hunters of the CDC? well, i did and loved it. in any case, when i was at my UTH interview, i was talking with a prof at the lunch and she mentioned that the authors work with UTH at a satellite location in brownsville. i just about pooped my pants it was so exciting. i kept thinking about how i could hook up some kind of elective rotation or summer research with them.

alas, i'm going to baylor now. 🙁 well, i'm still going to try to hook that up. i'm interested in learning about border populations. they've got the same crazy **** that i know and love from undergrad micro and grad trop med.

Meh it's okay... we'll fix it sometime. And if it's not before I graduate, well at least I made it easier for the next person.

I have no idea how long it's going to be. Right now, I'm writing up the materials and methods part for making 3D plates, seeding cells into them, and the maintainence of said plates. I have to look at all these other papers for examples, cause its such a strange type of writing.

Nothing surprising per se... but just exciting. We are so excited that 2D stuff translates to 3D. My grad student showed me some pictures from my 3D stuff that he took awhile ago and my mouth dropped on how close the image looks to this diagram of an in vivo stem cell niche we have in our lab. It's pretty cool stuff.

Oh and Jolie... ID is awesome. After taking Micro, I think it's amazing. I'm sure Baylor will give you many opportunities for it if you look for them!

How exactly do you go the ID route? Are their residencies very competitive?

Aren't they finishing up some sort of big deal ID building or lab at utmb? I thought I remembered someone showing us something at the interview

The Galveston National Lab...opens in July. There's not too many Biosafety Level 4 labs in the country and we'll have two. They plan on studying plague, hemorrahagic fevers, anthrax, SARS, etc. They do that now, but it's a lot more space. They've also got two centers that partner with the WHO...one for tropical diseases and one for arboviruses and hemorrhagic fevers. Never quite gotten the urge for research, but I might have to when that opens just to say I've worn one of those space suits haha. Oh, and the PI for the lab got his MD at the Roach, which I'm sure will just tickle Orbit.

Yeah I remember that too... cause I definitely thought of The Hot Zone (awesome book Kudu... good call) when they talked about it.

...Sixteen Candles is on!

Haha...remember Dr CJ Peters from that book? Worked with Ebola in Africa...he's Director of Biodefense here and researches hemorrhagic fevers( I think he becomes driector forthe GNL when it opens)...hope he does path lectures🙂...

Are you actually watching it? How many times does that make?

Ah, heard of it, but I don't think I read that one. They have a student org here that goes to the border area for clinical work pretty regularly. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you tagged along if you wanted to...Frontera de Salud I believe.

It's a 2 year fellowship out of IM.

Only the best 🙂 You should totally try out research... you seem somewhat interested in it, might as well give it a try.

Duh I watched it... How many times? I dunno... but lets just say not only do I know all of the lines, but I also know the song lyrics
