out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
...and all this time I was worried about Kudu stooping that low...

haha, aw, I feel bad now. Well you are certainly the most popular one in the oos texas thread 😉

Ugh...I'd almost rather have no one show up than everbody show up haha. I guess they could do the wave or something when you're on stage.

Maybe I'll give them the wrong day to show up :meanie:

I got a rejection letter from UTH today!!!😕

It's dated March 14??

Random... it's like they found it behind a desk and thought, hmm, guess we should mail this... 🙄

So anyone know about how the waitlist is like for out of state? specifically UTMB for me..... how many people on waitlist generally and and how many people get accepted off?

Uh...I'm afraid you're in the wrong thread for those questions haha..jk. UTMB has 200 on the list and I want to say they usually take about 15-20. There's already been movement. Been accepted anywhere? Congrats if so.

I swear this whole process is unbelievably random sometimes. I think I'll go into academic medicine so I can get on an adcom and just see what on earth is going on...

As for utmb, they can kiss my a$$ll! No offense kudu 🙂

Agreed. I really want to be a student interviewer so I can get in on this action.

Hey dark11!!! Welcome back!!!:hello:

Thanks for starting this thread for us!!! Sorry it's not being used for its intended purpose, but we still like it.

:hijacked:

I've always wanted to use that little guy.

Zuluslayer's got your best answer on waitlist movement. dd got in off the UTH waitlist, so there has definitely been some movement, but not a tremendous amount yet. I think there may be more around May 15. Good luck!

Haha...none taken👍. It would be fun to be on an adcom. The practical joke potential as an interviewer is off the charts....

So about 10 UTMB first years went skydiving yesterday, including a friend of mine. She insists I should try it, saying she felt the effects for hours afterward, but I can't tell if her enthusiasm is of the "I had to poop my pants, so to be fair you have to do it too" variety. I've actually been hounding a paragliding school near here since Jan about when they're going to start a new class, as I'd like to get a pilot rating so I can buy my own equip and fly solo, but so far nothing firm. Any of you guys skydived, and what'd ya think?

Agreed... 3 cheers for dark for making my favorite thread ever! :hardy::hardy::hardy:

No way man... I hate airplanes because of a fear of crashing... willingly jumping out of one in order to crash?? That's crazy talk!

I think I'd rather parasail than paraglide. It doesn't seem as high up. I'm not afraid of heights, just the falling part. (Psychological aspect? Perhaps.)

Meh, in parasailing you're tethered to the ground, you don't pilot the wing yourself like in paragliding. I read somewhere that you don't experience the sensation of falling because its smooth...I hope thats true haha. For skydiving though, I think I'd have to down a bottle of Xanax to overcome my primal survival instincts haha.

Ok, so I was cruising youtube at 2am courtesy of Starbucks and found some med school gems. FYI Orbit, there's an 8 part comical orientation to med school done by Mizzou students on there. Pretty campus.

I won't say I told you so about Roach..hear it from the students themselves.

I had a friend who went a while back. He took some course so he could do it alone rather than tandem. He said that it really didn't feel like falling after jumping out of the plane, but just more like floating, though I don't know...

 Those were funny. That snot thing on the blair witch thing was sort of uncalled for...

What's up with the white coat burning too? I guess burned out med students don't do productive things with their free time. I bet the "professor bonfire" comes next 😉

haha I just watched that 8 part thing... the guy in one that got slapped by the girl and then the guy giving rectal exams were 2 of my kaplan teachers

Too bad a lot of the shots of campus in that video show some of the construction we had! But yeah, I love our campus! (shocked... I know 🙄)

I think she just felt kinda in shock...probably some sort of temporary PTSD haha.

 Those were funny. That snot thing on the blair witch thing was sort of uncalled for...

Yeah I've heard med students called snotty or snot-nosed, but.... Oh, and there's plenty from UTH on there too...especially for MDTV.

Let me guess, they're on your facebook? When was the campus built? Looks like some of the buildings have a NE colonial?? feel to them. Did they pattern it after somewhere specific?

well lacrosse, I made my son cook dinner tonight (part of his "mom is leaving" education), then asked him what was for dessert, and he volunteered that it was pumpkin bread, so I had him bake pumpkin bread. It was mighty tasty, and is almost gone.

He even admitted that he enjoyed baking!!🙂

haha you asked for it...

Mizzou was founded back in 1839 (hence, '39) and most of the original buildings were built b/w then and 1870. It was rather small and in 1892 there was this big fire that ruined the main building (Academic Hall) except the 6 columns (dunno if you saw them in the video) that remained from the Academic Hall. Those 6 columns (they are Ionic) are now found on our Quad. Campus is split into 8 districts, but we usually just go by the 2 "campus" names: Red campus and White campus. Red campus was built in the late 1800s and has all reddish brick buildings. They are built w/ stone cornices, arched entryways, and black slate roofs. They are just meant to look strong. The earliest one, Switzler Hall, which is on the Quad, was built in 1871. There is a huge bell at the top of it which is inscribed w/ a Latin sentence that translates "Now is the occasion and the time". The bell only tolls in 3 occasions: death of someone in the Mizzou family, Tap Day for secret societies, and Mizzou '39 induction (it was amazing!).

White campus was built in the early 1900s and has buildings made of white limestone w/ a Gothic feel. You probably saw the shot of Memorial Union, which was built as a memorial to Missouri alumni who lost their lives in WW1. So, when you walk underneath the archway, its tradition to only whisper and to remove your hat as a sign of respect.

Oh, and, we are one of the few schools to have our campus be a Botanic Garden. 😀 Too much?

Unfortunately they're usually gay :meanie: ...but exceptions to every rule I guess...

Kudos on the school history by the way 👍. I don't really know jack about my undergrad.

Definitely not in his case! It's one of those things I used to worry about, as he likes art, classical music, and opera among other things, but I don't know too many gay guys who sing bass at 13. 🙄

I'm headed to Temple today for the inspection on my house. I'm actually kind of excited!! My mom and daughter are going with me, so it should be interesting...they are two peas in a pod. I just hope the storms hold off until we get back.

Oh, and it's Fiesta Friday in San Antonio, a city holiday. Schools, government offices and many private offices, and lots of other stuff are closed for the Battle of Flowers parade. It's a lot of fun, but we're not going this year.

Viva Fiesta!!

Go Spurs Go!!

Lol, only in Texas could you have a "fiesta Friday." Good luck with the house stuff.

Naw, thanks for sharing. I'm a little scared as to how you found all this out though.🙂

Kudos on the school history by the way 👍. I don't really know jack about my undergrad.

It's a combo of working at freshman summer welcome, being on Homecoming royalty, and '39. Oh, and I used to want to be on "Tour Team" to give campus tours to high school kids (they know everything about campus), but it never fit my schedule.

I think a lot of men like that stuff, but are too proud to admit it. My boyfriend likes the Muny (it's an outdoor musical theatre in St. Louis) a lot... he grew up w/ it since his family has season tickets to it. Last summer we saw Peter Pan and this summer we're seeing The Producers.

Hope the house stuff is going alright! And hope the storms held off... they are here right now!

The house deal was fine - needs a roof and a water heater, but I'm not surprised. We're going to amend the contract tomorrow to get something done without me having to sink $xxx more into it.

The storms have not hit here yet, but if I'd been in Temple this evening, I might have gotten cozy with my new hall closet. They were under a tornado warning for a while.:scared:

haha, us too proud to admit something?! Never! 😉 I can handle classical music and maybe an occasional play, but definitely no opera!

And cpa make sure you don't replace your water heater on your own, lol, it really blows. I helped my grandpa do one a few weeks back, and after number bumps, scrapes, and a fair amount of cursing we got it in.

page 3 bump!

It's supposed to rain today, but it's all north of us. Typical. WE NEED RAIN!!

dd, I have no intention of installing my own water heater - we've done it before, too, and know better. Not as bad as installing countertops, but bad enough to not do it again!

Rain here today. Which is bad because I love sleeping during rain but I need to do some work.

I babysat 2 kids last night... made 64 bucks but I've never seen more saliva come out of a kid in my life! I went over to my boyfriend's after (he lives like 1 minute from where I was) and he satarted to hug me and as if it were a reflex I said "don't touch me!" haha I think it is safe to say I will be waiting about 8 years to have kids

haha they weren't all that bad... it was just a case of monkey-see-monkey-do for most of the night 🙄

No peds then??? I'm there with you! I love my kids, but I don't want to deal with other people's kids for the rest of my life!

Ok, here's my beef of the day, totally unrelated to anything else, but it's really got me irked.

My son and I just had lunch at Jason's Deli. Yummy. On the table, they had a "commitment to caring" card touting all the fabulous things they are doing to help the environment - solar water faucets and refrigeration, fluorescent lighting, etc. There were a few worthwhile things on the list. Then I looked over, and the woman at the table had a bottle of FIJI water (pulled from the cooler at the restaurant). To me, selling bottled water that has been transported no fewer than 6,410 miles from Fiji to San Antonio totally negates any positive impact any of their other efforts. While I have never been a "tree hugger," this made me mad enough to fire off an email to the company.

Any comments?

Yeah I know what you mean. What really irks me too is when the parents are completely oblivious to their misbehaving children. Like we were out last night and this little kid is randomly walking around sticking his head in our booth throwing napkins at us, and his parents didn't seem to notice much less care 😡

Yeah not to mention fiji is like $5 a bottle 🙄 I'm not too good for the tap. I just sort of laugh at all the "green" stuff going on lately. The fad will pass and everyone will go back to not caring.

I had actually been considering peds, I did a lot of volunteering in a children's hospital in atlanta and enjoyed it. But who knows...

Classical music is fine. I admit the only time I've gone to the theatre was on an elementary school field trip...but I'd try it again. Then again, are you sure he liked Peter Pan? Isn't that for kids? He wasn't gritting his teeth when he told you this was he?

Well its been raining here of and on for a couple of days...you're more than welcome to it.

For some reason, people keep saying I should go into peds (except my dad, who sees me in derm *shiver...ughhh*). I guess its because I'm goofy and upbeat, so they think I can "relate" to kids somehow. Problem with peds forme is the screaming and the psychotic parents. Also seems like it might be kinda boring unless you specialize.

Ok...I'm going to expunge you from my facebook if you put up another cheer for those ******ed Spurs.

You are right about one thing, though. It's the parents, NOT the kids!!

haha you haven't seen Peter Pan as done by the Muny... fun for all ages. The Muny is just a good time no matter what you see. And yes, I'm positive he loves it... he picked that out himself.

Going downstairs to make my last Passover lunch... bread in about 5 hours!! :hardy: (or cookie dough ice cream is more like it... I have some in my freezer and haven't been able to eat it all this time!)

Oh and I forgot to tell you guys that I really was Rachael Ray this weekend... I made a fish recipe that she makes w/ a few revisions of my own... the boyfriend gave it the 👍👍

haha no no... just added some mushrooms and changed the type of fish... nothing astronomical.

Mushrooms are gross, so you flunked that part. What fish did you use? I'm going to start drooling if you say rainbow trout....

You know, I don't watch cable much, and I've actually never seen Rachael Ray's show, so pretty much all I know about her is from word-of-mouth. Is she really good?

I'll second that, fungus does not belong in the GI tract, regardless of it's preparation.

Ohhhh my gosh, you guys are crazy, because mushrooms are amazing. Especially when cooked.

I used tilapia... cheap and so good. It was the first time my boyfriend had tilapia and he liked it a lot.

I like Rachael Ray... hate how she spells her first name, but like her. Some of her recipes don't look so awesome to me, but she's got quite a few gems. She's pretty opposite of me though.. she hates baking.

Oh... and mushrooms are amazing. That is all.

Ok, maybe we're not talking about the same type here. We're referring to the slimy bland ones commonly used in the mainstream culinary arts. There are of course a couple of other types...

1. Those used to assassinate opposing political leaders.
2. The ones that make you feel like you're rotating inside a kaleidescope listening to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Might you be talking about one of those?

cpa2md,

I am 38 and have been working for 17 years .. currently a senior manager in IT.. I am looking into applying for 2009 .. taking MCAT on May 31 '08.. finishing up prereqs in the community college.. 4.0 GPA so far.. have an undergraduate BS in Computer Science from a Foriegn country but have MS (Computer Science) GPA 4.0 and MBA GPA 3.46 from the united states. I am a native of Houston.. I really would like to go to UT houston or any school in Texas.. I am also volunteering in the hospital and shadowing a physician in town.
How did the schools treat you as a non-trad ?

Exactly like you, I want to work rest of my life in the area where I will enjoy and be happy and contribute more.. .. and I have two kids .. 12 and 10 years.. they are really excited about my career change.. and my husband is very supportive also..

I met with A&M admissions.. and also with Texas tech.. I would rather go the A&M because it will be close to home..

Thanks a lot in advance for any insight...

Yay!! Good for you!!! (someone who actually reads this thread no less!!)

My experience is that UTSW and UTH don't like non-trads too much. I didn't apply to Baylor, but have heard the same about them. UTMB, A&M, and San Antonio are all known for their acceptance of non-trads. I didn't apply to North Texas, but they are also well known for their love of non-trads.

UTMB would be great for you - there are several people there who commute to Houston, and they have their afternoons free most of the time. I interviewed there, but never heard anything else from them (they haven't even rejected me formally yet). It would've been 5 hours from my house, anyway, so I would've had to think long and hard about it.

To be honest, as much as I wanted at first to go to school here in San Antonio, I'm just as glad that I'm not (or so I keep telling myself!). I've heard some things I just don't like about UTHSCSA, and their admissions people are not forthcoming about things at all. As it is, I'll be commuting on weekends (about 2 1/2 hours), but I'll have all week to concentrate on my school stuff, and not worry about the logistical things like what's for dinner.

My advice (even though I'm not all the way there yet)...

1) Apply EARLY. The first set of applications get sent to the schools mid-June. Make sure yours is one of them, with the MCAT score close behind.

2) Do really well on your MCAT. My first MCAT score was a 25 (I was REALLY sick when I took it), and I think the 31 on my second MCAT was not taken as seriously because of the 25.

3) Apply broadly. I applied for 07, but only applied to San Antonio. They wouldn't look at my second MCAT, so I was stuck reapplying. I think the 2 MCATs, the reapplication, and their knowledge that I really only wanted San Antonio was the reason they rejected me.

4) Don't give up!!! Recognize that even with fabulous things going for you, this is still a very random process. I had 3 interviews within the first 2 weeks of the interviewing season, yet was only accepted to one school (and I'm not a social dweeb - I know how to interview.) Last year I had nada.

5) Communicate with your family!! Since you've obviously read a few things I've written, you know that my family is 100% behind me. Recognize that as big a sacrifice as you are making, they are making a bigger one, and they didn't have a choice in it like you did. My kids hear on an almost daily basis, "next year, this won't..." or "next year, you'll have to..." It is extremely hard, but know that it is all for the end result. As a corollary, be nice to your friends, because you will be calling on them a whole lot to help with transportation and the like!

6) Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. No one has all the answers, no one is where you are, no one really knows what you are feeling. People (including me) are more than willing to give advice, but you still have to go with your gut. You (and your husband) are the ones making the decisions, and you know what is right for you and your family.

7) Don't sweat the small stuff (or the green stuff). It will work out. I know that I am spending money that should otherwise go to my kids' education, my retirement, etc. I should be working at my lucrative job making money, instead of biding my time and spending it hand over fist. Too bad. That's not in the cards right now, but if I stopped and worried about it, my dream would fail. I have to focus on the dream, and accept that by the time I die, the loans will all be paid off. If not, I have life insurance.

8) Listen to your kids. Hug them, love them. Someone told me the other day that the time I'm away at school will go by so fast, and I had to tell them that's not what I want to hear. By the time I'm through with school, my son will be graduating from high school. I don't want that to go by too fast.

9) Accept whatever happens. Recognize that what we plan is not always what God has planned for us. Our timing is not God's, and we can't make things work out our way just because we think they should. That doesn't mean you're not allowed to cry when they don't work the way you think they should.

That's all I can think of for now.😉 Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions, or need someone to talk to!

There've been a couple that fit that description, yes. :luck: on the other presentation...was today, wasn't it?

Yep, it was today. It was not as awesome of a program as the one a couple weeks ago. I only presented for an hour and had 2 judges that seemed to have no biology background. One lady really didn't understand what I was saying even though I repeated it 4 times to her in very dumbed down terms, and the other lady was just like "uh-huh" as if she had no clue what was happening. It was even so bad that a guy that's in my lab had a judge that was listening to his presentation about stem cell rejection in the brain and midway through the judge goes "You know, I heard that people put neural stem cells in the brain and they became neurons!" 😱 OMG no way!!!

So it was pretty lame.

Sort of off topic, but I had a real weird deja vu sense while reading your post 😕

haha, that's funny though. I'm thinking of growing some new brain cells before starting med school 🙂

Yay!! Good for you!!! (someone who actually reads this thread no less!!).

Hey, they all read it, they just don't want to admit it.😉

My experience is that UTSW and UTH don't like non-trads too much.

Maybe to some extent, but both UTSW and UTH int'd me, and they have nontrads there, so definitely don't dismiss your chances...every app is different.
