out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My developmental psych final today had 77 questions... took it in 30 minutes

When I first started back to school, I took the chemistry class that the nursing students took (it was a good ease back into school kind of thing). I spent 7 minutes on the first test. (I got 100 on it, too.) That may have been the moment I decided that I really should try to go to medical school and not do the nursing thing!!:laugh:

Edit: I hate you for your mushroom cloud haha

Well, I still have a certain bloody smilie if you think the situation might warrant it at some point haha.

Look on the brightside... at least you're making money!

Eh...money is overrated, but you know what's not...sleep! 😛

Far be it from me to dog the nursing students, heavens knows I know enough (who by the way constantly feel the need to inform me how, "they could have gone to medical school."🙄) But yeah, I was surprised by the level of difficulty, or there lack of, when I saw some of the nursing labs and exams when I use to TA, back in the day.

Saving from the depths of page 5!!

Today is day 2 of pampering myself pre-graduation... yesterday I got a pedicure and my hair cut, today is a manicure.

So I've only had 2 pedicures in my whole life now, and I have somewhat ticklish feet if you hit the right spot. I seriously almost kicked the woman

Haha, yeah that's probably the same reason I don't get pedicures either. That and losing my manhood of course. So I think I've figured out I'm going to quit my job at the end of June, which should give me about two weeks to move.

Yeah, I figured I could go six weeks without needing to jump out a window or off a bridge.

After the day I had last week, I came to the conclusion that the window or bridge were necessary if I were to continue. I'm trying to finish up some education stuffs, take care of 1 client, and get the firm to pay for next year's license before I hand in my laptop. I found out that last year's license renewal notice was mailed 6/13, so I have 4 weeks?😎

I have a Ryder truck reserved for 6/9 and 6/10 to take all my stuffs up there, but I close on my casita 2 weeks from today!

Man this thread keeps getting pushed back in the wave of lesser threads 😀

But at least you have a place to live cpa! I'm pulling for the student housing as it would save me a good amount of money, unfortunately all I can do is sit around and wait on their list. So I'll probably hold off for that, and if it doesn't work out, get one of the more expensive apartments in the area at the last minute.

I had a couple of education major friends that were practically emabarassed to show me their books when I asked what they were studying haha. At my graduation, about 75% of the education majors graduated with honors🙄.

I just...I can't be in this conversation without losing something that could only be regained by walking into the woods in a loincloth and killing a bear with a dull knife.

As a preemptive strike on the phone call you're going to get from Mr. Freeze today...Congrats!!:hardy::hardy::hardy:.

So I think I've figured out I'm going to quit my job at the end of June, which should give me about two weeks to move.

Light at the end of the tunnel. And then a longer one...darker, and dank.....

cpa...I pm'd you!

My, that avatar looks so good on you. Where'd you find it...oh, that's right😀.

Are you just joining phi beta kappa? Is it good for anything? I got an invitation a while back, but didn't really see the point.

Yeah... you have to be a graduating senior I believe. I just know that it's widely recognized.

Haha, oh my gosh! Well if its recognized! Do you think I can use it as a pick up line in a bar? "hey baby why don't we go back to my place and ill show you my phi betta kappa membership card...if you know what I mean."

Very interesting. It is hard to see based on the number of TV ads we see for asbestosis cases and mesotheliomas, but interesting. On the flip side, there was a report on the local news last night about the lack of neurologists and neurosurgeons in San Antonio (which I have heard from other docs, too), and the lack of a certified stroke center in San Antonio.

The article was very one-sided (written by a former member of the legislature), and I wonder what the other side of the story is...are we now getting the doctors who have left Tennessee because their malpractice rates are through the roof because of claims? Are we getting the bad doctors who can't get insurance elsewhere? It did not address who these doctors are that are coming.

The last article of this nature (one-sided, look what wonderful thing Texas has done) was about the 10% rule for Texas high school seniors. If a student graduates in the top 10% of his or her high school class, he is guaranteed admission to state schools (i.e. UT or A&M). It was lauding the rule as opening doors for kids from rural areas to make it into these schools, increasing the diversity in these schools. What they failed to point out is that it is keeping a lot of well-rounded, top-tier kids out of these schools because of numbers. My kids, for example, will have 0% shot of being top 10% at their large, well-regarded high school simply because of the way grades are calculated. Despite the fact that my kids will be in "pre-AP" classes, which are higher weighted, they will also be in orchestra and athletics, which are not. Thus, based on the fact that 81% of the incoming freshman class at UT are there by virtue of the top 10% rule, my kids (and so many more like them) have a less than 1 in 5 shot at a spot? Sounds like trying to get into medical school!! [end rant]

I guess this is pretty good news for us (I know lacrosse isn't in a texas school, but there's always residency 😉). The story is a tad one sided, but I wouldn't imagine the majority of people "flocking" to texas are malpractice ridden physicians who can't get insurance anywhere else, but just doctors with a lot of debt seeing a good financial situation in addition to the great hospital systems in the state.

Hope everyone's weekend went ok. So next week I have this evaluation thing at work. I've basically been on probation for the last 4 months, and could theoretically be let go with no questions asked. This wouldn't realistically happen as I have never missed any days, been late, or anything like that. Only I've been talking to a few people who've gone through it and the HR person talks to you about your plans with the company and whatnot. So if I tell them that I'll be leaving in five weeks, they may decide to chuck me out the door. I would sort of like to keep an income for the next month, and I've been trying to decide if I should tell them when I'll be leaving and risk getting fired (I suppose I could spend the next month playing gta 4 if this were to happen😛), keep my mouth shut, just during the meeting, and tell them a week or so later and look like a dill weed, or not tell them at all and just stop going when I have to move at the end of june and really look like a dill weed. Keep in mind at my first interview with them I went on about how much I want to find a good company and move up in it. Any one have any productive thoughts on the matter?

Well...technically when you started, your motives were, indeed, to find a good company and move up. As I recall, you did not have your UTH acceptance at that point, and you were rather down on life. In the meantime, other dreams have panned out, and you are excited about your future. 😉

Is continuity of someone in your position important? If so, they are not likely to chuck you out, especially if you say you're willing to help a new person with orientation and training. Don't be a dill weed - be honest (if asked!). Sincerity will do better than lies...you don't want to burn bridges, even if it's only a footbridge over a creek! Worst case scenario - you do get chucked to the wind, you collect unemployment for a couple of weeks, and you get to travel before you move.😎

Personally, I'm still hoping for a nice severance package.

My weekend's been good. We laid hardwood floors in our master bedroom yesterday, and it was much easier than feared! Still a bit to do, but only because some friends of ours from high school days came into town yesterday, and we spent the evening with them. Today, I took a nap!😴

:hello:

Officially finished w/ undergrad! Graduation was so fun... long, but fun. My first ceremony on Saturday was the Honors Convocation, and it was outside on our quad in front of those columns I posted before. It was a gorgeous day, pretty hot though sittin there in those black gowns.

My second ceremony on Saturday was the Arts & Science ceremony. Senator Claire McCaskill spoke and she had an awesome speech. It was really cool to get to walk across the stage twice... got a second chance at *hopefully* getting some good pictures haha.

Here's some pictures... first is the picture on the quad from where I was sitting, second is of the people in my research lab.

Yeah I don't think they'll chuck me to the curb, I wouldn't say they're short handed, but they're just barely keeping up with what has to be done. It would probably take a month or so to hire someone new and get them all trained up, and by then I'd be ready to get out of there. I'll probably find out for sure by friday, we'll see 🙂

Did you have the parade in your honor yet? I'm sure the faculty all wore black and cried hysterically at the fact that you'll no longer be gracing them with your presence on a daily basis. I like the medal, looks like you just won a marathon 👍

Ok, here's my question of the day...

I found out the recommended tabletPCs from A&M yesterday. Ouch! The cheapest of them is $1800 through them (going up to $2200 for the Dell). While you don't have to buy one through them, and they will still support ones not bought through them, you do have to have a tablet. Don't know if I like it or not.

Here's the question du jour, then...do I buy it through them, with an extended warranty included in the price (4 years worth), or do I buy one through eBay (a Gateway - the Dells are still 2 grand) for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price (new, but no warranty)?

Intuitively I know the answer, but I'm looking for feedback.

If you care, the link to their recommendation page is here: http://www.tamhsc.edu/information-technology/campuses/com/tablet-com.html

Congratulations lacrosse!! I saw a women's college lacrosse match on tv this weekend and thought of you. 😉

haha no parade as of yet... but very nice words from the Chancellor when he shook my hand at the Honors ceremony.

 I liked my decorations too... but we are just about to begin the marathon my friend!

Thanks! Yeah, I saw that some of that was on... I've got to find a way to play this summer!

Personally, I would buy the one w/ the warranty. So much has gone wrong w/ my computer over the past 4 years, the warranty was definitely worth it. So it might be 600 bucks cheaper on eBay... but I bet I've spent that on the fixes they've done. I would think this might be especially good to have w/ a tablet... never know what could go wrong if you use the writing function a bunch. Just my $0.02.

I'm personally not a fan of warranties. My dell would have been like half the price had I not gotten it, and I never even used it, so basically a waist of money money in my case. But if you're lacrosse it would have saved you money, so it sort of seems like a toss up. Warranties only cover hardware components so they're really only good if you drop it, spill stuff on it, or by some random chance a doohooky inside stops working. Not sure if it helps but I did see a HP tablet for like 1200 (it was the one I was considering buying).

haha, yeah a 6-10 year marathon in which we'll be in extreme debt afterwards...by the way I've been thinking about my "soon to be debt" more often than I had before, so much for primary care 😛

how many people actually end up using their warranties? i just bought a new laptop and to buy that much warranty would have cost me half the price of the thing. i'd rather save that money and put it towards a new computer should mine break than get the busted one back.

i don't know that's just me.

sorry to bust in on you guys! i know i'm not invited.

Oh, I got the results of my titers today...I'm not immune to mumps😱 so I have to go get an MMR tomorrow!!

GO SPURS GO!! (sorry kudu)😉

I'm old, remember? I think the mumps vaccine came into common usage in the late 70s or so. A lot of my peers actually got mumps - a friend had it on Halloween when we were 9. I got an MMR when I was 10, but it was only a single dose, so it didn't fully protect. I'm pretty sure I had rubella as a baby, and I would've had the measles vaccine, so those are good, but no mumps. 🙁

when i got into Peace Corps, i couldn't get access to all my vaccination records, so they gave me everything just to be sure. at the time, i was super pissed. now, i'm really glad because it was all free.

seriously there was one day where we got at least 5-6 different shots. rabies, hep a & b, MMR, TDaP, yellow fever, meningitis.:barf:

completely unrelated, but i wanted to tell the story. i guess that's why i'm not welcome.

I tell stories all the time, and they haven't kicked me out yet.🙄 They just ignore the rantings of the senior citizen!!

Haha, oh right, so how did you deal with the Black Death back in the day???
We burned people who made sarcastic remarks. Sarcasm was thought to spread disease. Bad air, you know.

I just bought a tablet pc. I looked at all of them...dell, gateway, hp, the lesser knows, etcetc. I have a friend who has the toshiba. He likes it except for the size (way too big and heavy). I took his advice when shopping around and got a smaller one, which was the HP tx2000. It was only ~1000. I really love it so far.

Oh, and speaking of old... this guy that spoke at graduation (the dean of arts & science) who is kinda older was making reference to the ways we communicate now, and then later in his speech he said something funny and goes "LOL"... he also made an OMG reference, but my favorite was about always keeping in touch/coming back to Mizzou, cause they want to be our BFF's  oh lame... but so funny.

I'm whole heartedly with you on this. They started this backassward rule about the time I was graduating highschool. I went to one of the better highschools in the state, and while my gpa was descent, I had absolutely no chance of being in the top 10%. That was a large part of my reason for leaving.

Hmmm….I’d heard about this, but never paid much attention. Sucks.

Oh the tangled webs haha. I’m sure it’ll work out. As a last resort, you could use ADHD as an excuse.

Congrats. I empathize with ya on the heat…I graduated in Aug. The tassel color for our dept was “drab”….really now, who picks these things out? Graduation presents?

So basically they want you to spend $2k on a fancy note taking device?🙄 How geeky of them. The one that's over 6 pds sounds like a pain to carry, but then the one with the 1.2 ghz ulv processor sounds sloooow. My cell phone died last week and I ordered one on ebay and got scammed…so probably not the best person to ask about them right now haha.

sorry to bust in on you guys! i know i'm not invited.

Invitations are for special occasions. You're a season pass holder, so its ok.

Ours were white... my boyfriend's was actually drab though haha.

haha can there be a valedictorian in college? Our school doesn't rank... all I know is that I was in the top 5 since the graduation booklet that lists everyone's names goes by latin honors.

Oh, and Kudu... I was reminded of you last Friday at the Phi Beta Kappa induction. The speaker was talking about his time in Africa (he was this super brilliant man who does work w/ AIDS, but his speech had NOTHING to do w/ why we were there). He was showing us pictures and some of the captions underneath people said Zulu... I giggled on the inside.

Yeah, no validvic at our school either, I believe I was one of two or three people in my degree program to graduate suma. Though in all honesty they'd probably have to invent a completely new award to encompass the enormity of lacrosse's ego...haha, er...acomoplishments. Lol.

Ok, this is getting comical. I've been trading emails with my boss for the last couple of hours trying to figure out when my last day will be. We had decided on June 18, but it turns out her boss won't be there that day to go to lunch with us!

My June is actually full of kid stuff and in-law visits, so it's being difficult. Or, I'm being difficult. Or something! Who thought it would be this hard to quit!!

I also found out I actually have to write a letter of resignation. Yikes!

Dear Job,

I wish I knew how to quit you. Here goes: It's been real, it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun.

Later,

Aww 😳

So I put in my contacts just a few minutes ago for the first time in like a year... I don't remember them being so uncomfortable (yes, before you ask, they are new). I put some drops in and everything, but they feel scratchy. I'm a fan of my glasses (just need them for reading), but I figured I'd better use the contacts since I spent moolah on them.
