out of state for texas schools

 not yet... but earlier they had planned on giving me my dad's car and selling mine so he could get a new one, but his doesn't have 4WD so they aren't so sure now....

Is 4wd that common up there? They're usually pretty good about keeping the roads clear from what I hear, so I dunno if the 4wd is that big of a deal, unless its a test day....

haha actually my mom was like oh and you have all those really thick sweaters you didn't bring to mizzou w/ you since you said they were too big, but you can take them there! Do my parents think I will be outside all the time??? 😕.

As you know, you just gotta dress in layers, as in caribou over arctic fox, over polar bear.

I was wondering how your craigslist transaction ended up cpa? I'm using it to try and sell my old laptop. It seems like it would be easier than ebay as I have no feedback and doubt anyone will want to buy from me, though if craigslist doesn't work out I'll probably give it a shot.

Did you sell it? How'd it go? Is it hard to upgrade laptop ram?

I think I'm sticking w/ dell. I found that you can save a load of money through educational discounts. I'm getting a $2000 laptop for about $1300. And that's w/ the fastest processor, most memory, biggest battery, and best care package... pretty good deal I think!

And I'm still getting Windows XP... can't switch to Vista just yet.

Whoa that's a big discount. Which model is it? You'll love your laptop come pbl time. I'm going to see how far I can get with the new touchscreen phone I bought.

Not yet, the guy backed out. Said he had to fix his car or something 🙄 I have another guy wanting to buy it, but he lives like an hour away and I'm not really up for a drive after getting off work. I don't think it's too terribly difficult to upgrade ram, at least for someone who knows what they're doing.

After a fair amount of browsing in the store and online I decided on one of the HP's. It's pretty small and looks cool, which is of course my highest priority in my new computer  No, but it's reasonably priced and has everything I need. Now the question...warranty or no? I'm thinking not, as it comes with a standard one year manufacturers warranty. If anything breaks I'd almost rather take the extra couple hundred I'd blow on the warranty and just put it towards a new computer...I'm sure mine will be outdated in a year anyway.

I'm torn on the whole warranty thing. I did go ahead and buy one for my new tablet, but it cost 1/4 as much as the computer! It is a three year warranty, and does include accidental damage, which is a good thing. 😉 A guy I know who just graduated and got his first job out of school spilled a glass of juice on his mac.😱 Fried it. The ladies in his office bought him a pack of sippie cups!

I tried to buy a stackable washer/dryer off Craigslist today, but when I called back this evening to go look at it, it had already been picked up!🙁 I'm looking for a 24", which is the little version. They had it priced right (i.e. cheap!).

Go Spurs Go!!

Apparently a lot of people buy cars up there... at a Subaru dealership or something, and those are AWD. A second year did tell me that the roads are pretty well kept so its not a huge deal... just when you're out at your preceptor's office and it starts to snow when you're leaving can be a problem on occasion. I hope to live on/near campus so I'll just be able to walk to class.

 I'm thinking North Face might work. And I found some boots that keep you warm in -20 degree weather... they aren't the prettiest, but only 30 bucks!

Inspiron 1520. I've had a laptop all throughout undergrad, couldn't think of going back to a desktop. And they told us that laptops are awesome for PBL... and showed us all the little outlets on the tables for it

Oh and dd... I'm getting the warranty on mine... something always tends to happen, so its worth it to me.

Got my acceptance letter in the mail today! 😀 Sending in my acceptance form tonight and starting to write my withdrawal letter to the MIZ tomorrow 🙂/🙁

is the boyfriend getting one too? (a withdrawal letter, that is.) 😳

Oh man haha I was sitting right next to him when I read that... luckily he didn't see

I'm not sure what's going to happen w/ that quite yet... he wants to come w/ me... I don't think it's a good idea, at least for the first year. I want him to do the things he wanted to do and find himself before sacrificing it all and leaving his family to come w/ me.

Oooops! Sorry!!😳

You have a very selfless atitude toward the situation. That's a good thing!😍

Yeah I'd have to be with lacrosse on the significant other moving stuff. Unless you guys have long term plans (engagement or otherwise), it may get sort of complicated, especially with the type of commitment med school requires.

Definitely. And I'm not ready for that serious yet! :scared:

Well, I just signed all the closing documents on my casita and wrote a really big check. 😳 If only it were "real" money - like the kind I'm going to have to pay it back with!!

I'm also hoping my new laptop comes today. 😉 DHL shows it being in town, but it doesn't say "out for delivery." I kind of feel stuck here, because while I don't know for certain that it will be delivered today, it's not the kind of thing I want sitting on my front porch. I do need to run some errands, though.

I know that this question is probly posted somewhere in this thread, but its just really long to look through....anyways my question is what are the chances of being accepted as an oos and what kind of stats do these texas schools look for in oos applicants?

Thanks guys!

I dunno. Warranties...they're betting it won't break down, and you're betting it will, but they're still in business🙂. Guess it depends on how much value you put on "peace of mind". Do you have to send it off for a few weeks to get it repaired?

Manufacturer defects tend to show up early and would be covered under the one year, and wear n tear problems will probably start to take their toll about the time the extended warranty wears off haha. Of course, if you're the unlucky type...

Go Spurs Go!!

If he wouldn't mind, what are these? What would he do in Roch? Just get a random job somewhere?

What???!! You didn't read through our whole thread??!😛

Welcome! First, by state law, only 10% max of a class can be filled by out-of-state peoples. Texas legislators figured Texas taxpayers are heavily subsidizing their education, so they ought to be Texans.

That is not to say that out-of-staters don't get in. I don't know that they really want anything more stats-wise than they do for in-staters, but they definitely look for ties to the state. Why do you want to come to Texas for school, and will you show us that you are willing to stay? Again, they don't really want to subsidize the education of Okies. 😉

Each of the schools is different as to exactly what they want, but strong extracurriculars and that all important tie to Texas are held in common amongst them. Beyond that, a lot of it is luck and chance.

Good luck!:luck::luck:

Ok, so I just got all excited because I heard a truck outside - thinking it might be my new computer!!😀

It was the garbage truck.😡

Well, I'm guessing I'm not the one to answer this since I didn't get into a TX school (and the rest of the people in here will tell you that haha), but what cpa said is most likely dead on. Good luck! :luck:

If he wouldn't mind, what are these? What would he do in Roch? Just get a random job somewhere?

He's really into cars. His whole life he has wanted to work w/ them. His big dream is to own a shop that makes custom engines and stuff like that (of which I understand nothing) for cars that cost you a pretty penny. For about a year, he has been wanting to go to this institute that teaches you how to make all of that stuff. I dunno where he would go from there, but he probably has a clue.

I honestly don't know what he would do in Roch. We kinda got into a little tiff last night about it. It's not that I don't think it would be great for him to come because then I would have someone there w/ me, but I just don't think it's the best idea. He told me he wouldn't come w/ me right away... I dunno what's going to happen. 😕

Ok, so I just got all excited because I heard a truck outside - thinking it might be my new computer!!😀

haha aww

Yeah, they're missing out if they don't. No shortcutting through this thread! Its for the best, you'll see.

Ok, so I just got all excited because I heard a truck outside - thinking it might be my new computer!!😀

Tell me what you think of the whole tablet deal after you play with it.

Oh, and kudu... your avatar is... nice.

You know you hate it. I thought the perv-stache added a slight element of retro creepiness to it.

Definitely. And I'm not ready for that serious yet! :scared:

 you and me both sister

So I got mine! It's nice. I'm still oddly sad to see my old computer sitting on the floor by itself, with it's power cord wrapped around it. I don't think I can sell it, it's like getting rid of an old friend 🙁

I know that this question is probly posted somewhere in this thread, but its just really long to look through....anyways my question is what are the chances of being accepted as an oos and what kind of stats do these texas schools look for in oos applicants?

I'd agree with my fellow thread members. Ties to texas are one of the most important thing to have for oosers, stats are as always important, but with good ec's and a reason to come to the state you'd be in good shape.

Like the avatar kudu, I keep hearing, bow-chica-bow-wo in my head for some reason.

Did anyone else get rejected from UTSW today? I saw that a couple of people did over in the RoT thread. How kind of them. 🙄

In addition to my house, I bought a stackable washer/dryer today off of Craigslist. I've been looking for one, and this one was around the corner (across from my kids' school), and I got the guy to bring it to my house since it was already in the back of his truck!😀 On top of that, his wife miswrote the ad, so it was way cheaper than it could've been!! (I paid full price, then threw in a bit for the mile he had to deliver it!!) It's been a good day!🙂

Arghh I want to start buying stuff for my place! But I guess I need a place first

I got pretty crappy spots on this list they have for the order in which people get certain graduate housing 👎 Need to make a trip up there soon...

P.S... I'm still ridiculously excited 😀

P.P.S... I love our gang!

 You know sometimes I forget we're all going to be doctors...😉

Patient: "Um.. what's that picture of an M&M on your coat pocket for?"
dd: "You know the Bloods and Crips?"
Patient: "Yes..."
dd: "It's kind of like that."

I dunno if we'd get too many patients that way...

But it's more like the Mexican Mafia, the way some people dress.🙄 I guess that makes dd the gang leader, huh?

Haha, well cpa I'm not going to deny I don't like being in charge (the premed stuff may never go away), but we can have a m&m gang democracy. I like the patch idea too! But I don't generally go around advertising how big a loser I am, its better if people find that out on their own.

Well, my new computer arrived today (not using it yet, though), AND I am officially the owner of a casita in Temple, Texas.🙂

Can we say broke???

Shoot... I will be able to cry broke for you very soon 🙄

Congrats on both! Let us know how the tablet is.

Greetings from the new Gateway E-155C tablet!

Initial impressions: heavier than my baby Dell (big surprise), screen is going to take some getting used to - it's a bit fuzzy (a common complaint with tablets), and buttons are in places I'm not used to.

I've played just a little bit with the touchscreen/writing stuff. Kind of cool. It looks really weird to have it laying flat on the sofa.

Oh, well, so far, so good. Wireless is working, and it is very quiet. And the N key is not falling off.

Just took my husband and my son to the airport. They are flying to Chicago for the weekend as my father-in-law is receiving an honorary doctorate. My son is missing 2 1/2 finals tomorrow - he's taken the two I knew about already, and his Algebra I teacher gave him his to take on the plane.😱

There are benefits to being one of the good kids at school, and having teachers like you.😉

Yeah I'm still trying to get use to the new placement of my keys as well. Delete isn't in the same place, and I was trying to make it take a nap (hybernate 😉) and spent some time searching the key board for the correct button. My mouse sensitivity is a little different also.

Ok, so I told one of my bosses about med school plans and she made it sound like they'd want to let me stay on for the last few weeks, but it was up to the "big boss." She made it clear that they could still just let me go anytime. Honestly I don't care that much either way, but would like to have the pay check for the extra three weeks.

My son just called me. They're at WRIGLEY FIELD watching the Cubs! :soexcited: <---Look! A new dude! I am so jealous of them!

Oh, well, at least I got an estimate for painting my house that is 1/3 the first estimate I got.😱:ninja: <--- another new dude!!

Like the avatar kudu, I keep hearing, bow-chica-bow-wo in my head for some reason.

He looks a little bit Snoop Dogg, and a whole lotta Bee Gees.

Did you get to look at the housing you're on a list for while you were there?

P.P.S... I love our gang!

Let's all do one elective rotation together 4th year at Johns Hopkins...m'kay? Wait, scratch that, how 'bout U of Hawaii?

Oh, and under the white coat with the m&m, we'll have our BFF t-shirts...our gang will be super intimidating.

You know sometimes I forget we're all going to be doctors...😉

I dunno. I think there's a good chance that about the time rotations start we'll all be "handpicked for our talents" and ushered into an exciting career in medical transcription.

I didn't see the inside... but now I'm thinking about finding somewhere else that's within walking distance w/ some girls in the class. I talked to one of them today and she's going up to look next weekend. So much cheaper to live w/ people.

I was thinking we'd all go to conferences sporting our gang colors and flashing m&m signs and proceed to threaten everyone there by soliciting our "protective services" :meanie:...I saw it on the sopranos one time, we'll have our loans paid off in no time!

gah, I'm above jokes as obvious as that...who am I kidding, you just beat me to it :eyebrow:

It actually fells pretty good. I just did all this using IW it, and the issues I see are my problems, not its. I did not go back and correct anything. Mind you, I actually do have decent handwriting, tout still, there is a learning curve. I'm writing in cursive.

Perhaps the biggest issue I'm having is clicking the button on the Side of the pen, which acts as a right-click mouse button. It also has an eraser on the eraser end, but I'm not using that now either. I'm just letting you guys see my scribbles when my brain moves faster than my fingers. I kind of think that I can actually type faster than I can write these days, though.

yes, well, it's the ivy-walled Wrigley Field experience as much as anything. They had a blast!

So much cheaper to live w/ people.

Yeah, it really is. I'm considering it, though I've never had a roommate. Any less obvious pros/cons of it you'd care to share? I hate surprises.

haha I was going to say, kudu, you sure you can handle B'more weather?

Sure, by that time you'll have racked up enough North Face frequent freezer points to gift me a nice parka. Or, I can just double up a couple of medium size tube socks and poke a few holes in them, one for my head and two for my arms....

We could do m&m commercials with dubious claims as to the various ailments a daily bag of m&ms can keep away....foot fungus, TB, cooties....

I hate to be the one to break it to you guys, but it looks like cpa has been cheating on us with another oos texas thread  😛

So after I informed my employers of my intentions thursday I sort of expected to come in friday and be given the heeve-ho. Turns out they're going to let me stay the last three weeks, and were actually pretty nice about it. I'm not sure if they sent out a memo or something, but I had people congratulating me all day...it was sort of weird 😕

Hmmm well, it totally depends on who you live with. I'm taking the leap of faith to live w/ people I don't know... I've talked to 2 girls already. But pros/cons? Here goes... pros: sometimes its nice to have someone to go chat with, not having to buy all the kitchen stuff yourself, maybe sharing some groceries (we did like milk, eggs, butter, spices, oil, etc.), cheaper rent, people to go out w/ or run errands w/... cons: can be noisy, can be lacking in the tidiness area, they or their significant others use your groceries (because it's "free" to them). That's all I've got for now.

I just think it will be good for me since I won't know anyone (did I mention I'm super excited about that?).

I hate to be the one to break it to you guys, but it looks like cpa has been cheating on us with another oos texas thread  😛

haha I saw that thread a couple days ago... and our thread was like 5 below it. I was like did you seriously not see the title of this thread before starting your own? Or did you read it and realize it wouldn't help you

Maybe you had a sign taped on your back... like a kick me sign, but it said "this jack*** is a quitter, but tell him congrats anyway". Just a thought.

It's funny you say that, as there are a number of extremely mature individuals around the place who tend to take note cards write dumb things on them and proceed to tape them to the back of your lab coat when you're at lunch or something. I can't stress how professional the working environment is 🙄

By the way, I was looking into moving, it's expensive as crap to go from Georgia to Texas (like $700-800 to rent the smallest moving truck and move it by myself without even figuring in gas). I'm thinking I may just squash as much stuff as I can in my civic and buy all new stuff when I get there!

Um you're tellin me. I just looked at Uhaul and the truck + "auto transport" costs 934 bucks. Without gas... with gas would probably be like 360 bucks more 😱

Looks like I need to do more looking...

Yeah cpa, talking about us (weird??) behind our back...shame on you.😉 Although she did at least try to steer people over here. Somewhat disturbing they chose to create a different thread.

I had to give my work about a day or two notice...they didn't blink an eye haha...I'd only been there for about a month too.

I'm just not sold on living with peple I don't know. A couple of people from my old class are looking at renting rooms but neither can take pets, and I can't convince my family to take mine either.

uh, well I used to be a bit of a practical joker at times on the job. Like the day my manager kept asking where my 20 was on a busy day over the walkie, so finally the next time he did it I stuck it near a toilet and flushed. Got some giggles from most of management, except the guy in question haha.

I checked my profile and then a couple of ya'lls...looks like sdn has changed the format. Oh well, I never use it anyway.

Alright, so the Kudu went skydiving this morning. You watch a short video after signing 7 or 8 pages of liability waivers, then get geared up in the jumpsuit and harness. The insturctor practices the positions and walks you through what you have to do....arching your back is important for aerdynamic stability. You have an altimeter and when it reaches 7000ft you stare at it and then at 6000 you pull the ripcord. The plane ride was about 15 minutes, and we jumped from 14,000 ft. Freefall lasts about a minute and really makes your mouth dry haha. My instructor had 5700 jumps...crazy. Its some wild stuff, I ain't gonna lie, but frankly I think it was less nerve wracking than some roller coasters I've been on...don't realy like those.

Oh yes...I'm sure 39 with a get a kick out of this. You have to get weighed and at 130 lbs, my instructor picked out a jumpsuit for that size...the only one had pink stripes🙁. We decided to call it manly magenta.

I tried really hard to get them to come over to the light, but none has seen fit. 🙁 Maybe it's becasue they think we are more of a cult than a friendly group of nerds!!

Um you're tellin me. I just looked at Uhaul and the truck + "auto transport" costs 934 bucks. Without gas... with gas would probably be like 360 bucks more 😱

Looks like I need to do more looking...

You might look at Budget. For me, it was 1/2 the cost of UHaul. There was another thread a month or so back talking about different moving methods. AFS was listed highly, as was PODS. You might also check craigslist (my new favorite spot) to see if you can share a truck with someone. Who knows?

Hey dd, speaking of craigslist, did you find a new home for your computer?

Better you than me!! That's one thing that has NEVER appealed to me! Rollercoasters, once upon a time, were a very high priority for me. Not so much any more!!

Oh, and you weigh less than my 14 year-old son, and he's skinny! How short are you, dude?

Speaking of cults, has anyone noticed that people from the 2-7am thread now have their own patch/emblem? How'd they score that?

On rollercoasters I always think my head is going to get cut off when you go into a tunnel.

Oh, and I'm 5'10". How tall is your son? My BMI hovers between 18 and 19.

I actually ended up finding a cousin who wanted to buy it. Which is a lot better as I was sort of worried about the whole identity theft stuff. Heavens knows what someone with half a lick of sense could dig up on me from that computer :scared:

Yeah, what's the deal??? Who do we need to petition (or blackmail) to get in on that. And we even provide a service to young bright eyed premeds trying to get into texas :bullcrap:

They also merged all 97 parts of the 2-7am crew thread into one. It now has nearly 40k posts!😱

B is 5'9", just a tad taller than I. In his sister's words, "he's got abs!" He's solid muscle. It will come in handy in a week or so when I move my stuff!

PLEASE tell me you snapped a picture!!

Ooo thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.

I was wondering the exact same thing. Maybe they were jealous of our corresponding avatars.

You're right... we actually do help people... on occasion. 🙄

How I love skydiving. I wish I had the means to go AFF it up, but alas, time/money/distance/etc. gets in the way.

Blue skies.
