out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I love how I've gotten several people telling me that I cannot get into an MD program.

That's awesome. Good thing I'm entirely too arrogant to accept someone else's judgment on what I can, or cannot, do. 😎

Well, now we just get to see who's going to be 2012, a much more important number!!😉

I'll second that 👍

Do you guys ever look at expiration dates and stuff and think, "hey, I'm going to be a doctor before this can of spam expires!"...though I suppose in the case of the spam I may die before the stuff expires...

I love how I've gotten several people telling me that I cannot get into an MD program.

That'll happen. You just gotta keep your chin up and power through sometimes. One way or another if it's what you really want, I'm sure you'll find some way to make it happen :luck:

Oh and no more bananas....I sort of miss them

Agreed w/ dd. Right when I got my MCAT score back (I was in my lab), my PI took me down to talk to this other PhD that helps a bunch of pre-meds. He asked if I was doing better on practice tests, and I said at least 3-4 points better. He then proceeded to tell me that I needed to definitely take it again because it would probably be really difficult for me to get in. I guess I'd agree with him though... I mean 3 acceptances is pretty much not getting in 🙄 Next time I'm there I should thank him for his vote of confidence.

Have you ever actually eaten spam? I feel if I even touch it I could get a disease. :scared:

I can't stand spam...my friend in Hawaii made me try it when I was there- she likes it with a layer of rice on it wrapped in sea-weed... DEAD SERIOUS!!!

There's a lot of bloodsuckers and tools dredging the boards. I wouldn't take them to heart. Yes, the statistical reality is that you're a little against the wall here bud. But, once you clicked that TMDSAS submit button your app entered an area of space resistant to reality and predictability. I would like to suggest some int strategies though....

Interviewer:"So, what do you think the biggest prob..."
Exi:"I jump out of airplanes."
Int:"I'm sorry?"

Or....

Int:"Why should we accept someone with a 25 MCAT?"
Exi:"What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"

"I like bread and butter...I like toast and jam...I like all those simple things, and that's why I love spam" 😛...what were we talking about again?

Pick up the picture frame of the interviewer's cat sitting on his desk. "Wow, you have a cute pet," you say.

"Uh, thanks," the interviewers gives you a funny look.

"It would be a shame if someone ran him over...what was that about my mcat again?":meanie:

 That's fantastic. I like your thinking.

You're definitely right about the bloodsuckers and tools. My God, these people... but yeah, unfortunately, you're also right about the stats and all. As aforementioned, the fact that the MCAT section ranges in the MSAR well include my own scores is a little comforting, but I'm kinda between going with the flow and going all hardcore gonna-bend-the-MCAT-over-mmkay style for the month I've got until August 5th.

The waiting thing is horrible. And I hate not knowing... not knowing if I'm gonna at least get some interviews with that, if I should just count on retaking - again - sans interviews, how much my GPA + extras + PS will compensate for a not-so-impressive MCAT history, how much wood a woodchuck really can chuck, all that.

Sigh.

If it's any consolation, this last year flew by during all the application stuff. It really didn't seem like it at the time, but looking back now I have no idea where the time went.

On a related note I'm moving next week 😱

woot woot I'm 2012!

dd, do you have a ton of stuff to move? I'm trying to figure out if it would just be a ton cheaper to just buy new stuff up there rather than get a truck.

Hey OOSers,

When do Texas schools typically interview OOS applicants? Last year when did you guys start to hear about interviews?

Cool that I'm post #2013, hopefully a good sign 🙂

I ended up deciding that I'm just fitting what I can in my car and buying all new stuff when I get down there. It was going to end up costing well over a grand after gas and all just to rent the smallest truck they have. For that kind of money I found some descent living room packages and bedroom stuff at various furniture places. And this way I don't have to do any heavy lifting 😀

But I suppose if you were furnishing an entire house, it may even out and be more of a toss up. I just wasn't that attached to any of my old stuff, so didn't care that much anyway.

They'll start evaluating you immidiately along with instaters. Ideally you want to get interviewed before that oct.15 date when they start accepting oosers. Not getting an acceptance there doesn't mean a rejection, but from our experience last year means you are probably looking at a waitlist.

What dd said is true - there is no differentiation between in-state and oos for interviews. They should start sending out invites the second or third week of July. :luck:

My new advice for furniture is (big surprise) checking out the non-profit-affiliated furniture and stuff stores. There are several here in San Antonio...the Habitat for Humanity ReStore has 4 locations here now, and there are a couple of others of a similar ilk. While they sell some used stuff, they largely sell low- to mid-range furniture at decent prices. You can even do a bit of good while you're at it.

My other place to find stuff...Craig's list!!

dd is right, if there is any lesson to be gained from the last 2000+ posts, it is that being int'd after 10-15 seemed to give you 2nd class citizen status (well, third class since oos were already2nd class haha).

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but it popped into my head and thought I'd share it...very funny.

So... does that make him sad for not having at least 1,000 posts in about 5 years or us sad for having over 1,000 in just a year? 😕

It just shows that those of us with experience know how to say more with fewer words. 😉

I'm officially unemployed. It feels really, really weird. It's the first time since a brief stint in 1992 that I have not had a job. I was unemployed for a few months when I first graduated from school (long story), but other than that, I've worked since I was 13.

I just hope my new power cord comes today so I can go back to using a laptop!

My new power cord came!🙂 I'm back in laptop land!!

Yay, welcome back to the club. I'm sort of in between as I'm using my laptop on the dock 🙂

Heyyyyy... I'm just a very talkative person 🙁

haha, you and every other woman on the planet 😛 then again I have more posts than you so maybe I should just keep my big sarcastic mouth shut for once 😉

So I'm packing...sort of. Acutally I'm going through and throwing away a lot of very old junk at the moment. Packing will follow soon after.

How old can it be?? You've been there, what? Four years at the most!

It is amazing, though, how much JUNK we hang on to, then look at and wonder "why did I feel the need to keep this?"

Congrats on the touche to yourself 👍 So speaking of talking a lot, I was on a walk w/ my dog yesterday (vet said she needs to lose some weight... but she's so darn cute anyway) and talking on the phone (which I actually am not a fan of... weird) w/ my boyfriend and I was talking away and then was like okay you talk now, I'm sick of it. So he goes "you know those foot pads?" And I laughed and was like yeah I just read an article about how they are bs and he was like "What?? My roommate just bought them cause we wanted to try them" Such smart boys. I told him to hold them over a pot of boiling water and they would get the same effect. His roommate came home while we were still on the phone and he told him and all I heard was "tell her she ruins everything!!"

Ugh. I'm dreading packing. I need some boxes. I've got way too much stuff (again, weird for a girl to have too much).

It is amazing, though, how much JUNK we hang on to, then look at and wonder "why did I feel the need to keep this?"

I'm so bad at this... I always keep little things, like I kept the little placecard I had at the '39 banquet, just because I always think "maybe I'll use it in my scrapbook".

Laptop folks: what do you have, and how do you like it?

Had an XPS M1330, returned it since I don't really have a huge need for a laptop at the moment, but eventually...

The dock is just sort of a convience thing. It sort of turns your computer into a pcish sort of thing rather than buying a whole new one in addition to the laptop. You have a normal keyboard and mouse, better speakers, and the ac adapter, internet connection (I won't have wifi in my new place), printer, scanner, and all the other doohikies are already plugged in. All you have to do is plug in the laptop rather than going through all the trouble when I get home.

I'd actually seen a thing about those pads on dateline a while back talking about how they're such a big scam. Someone I worked with was talking about how she and her husband were going to try them, I did my best to point out how idiotic they were (as politely as possible).

How old can it be?? You've been there, what? Four years at the most!

haha, well four years is a long time to me 😛....Believe it or not some of the things are...**gasp**...even five or six years old! I mean I would have been 18!!!😱

But yeah I've found some of the stupidest things that I held onto; a set of car keys from my first car, billions of bank statements, empty cologne bottles, my ninetndo 64 😀, and lots more if you guys want me to compile a complete list. Something I'm hesitant about throwing out, and not sure why, but my packets from the schools where I interviewed. I may leave them with my parents, but they'd probably frame them 🙄

Good morning from New Orleans! It's raining here, and way too early. I'm here with the kids from our church doing youth camp/mission work. The kids know specifically what they are doing this morning, but they didn't bother to tell the grown-ups, so I don't know if I should be wearing painting clothes or yard work clothes.😕

Should be an interesting day! Just hope it doesn't rain quite as much as yesterday.

Might also try a Goodwill Superstore. I got a large sofa for $40. Good as new after I put a sheet of wood under the cushions.

I am so sorry. When I read this, maybe because of the above discussion, I imagined you saying this with an animated face and whilst smacking gum.

And which volume of this scrapbook are you on?🙂

Never been to NOLA. Hope it goes well!

Oh man... smacking gum is my biggest pet peeve! I usually always have gum in my mouth, but it usually just sits there, I never really chew it (weird, I know). But I cannot stand when people annoyingly chomp!

And I'm on volume 4... 1 for each year of undergrad 😀

Just got home from the eye doc... Too much "which is better, 1 or 2?" I think the tech just started showing me the same 1 and 2 over and over to see if I'd change my mind  Told me I'm still farsighted which is odd for someone my age (awesome), but somehow it's getting better 😕

Oh, and exi... I got a Dell Inspiron 1520 I believe... I say believe because I'm still attached to my old one. I still wanted Windows XP, so that's why I went for it. I got a 2000 buck laptop for 1350 w/ their educational discount. 👍

Yeah I know right, nothing better than watching someone who reminds you of a cow chewing cud.

And I'm mostly done packing. I used a lot of plastic tubs in leu of boxes (wal-mart had a sale), and I didn't want to be one of those weirdos running around to various places begging for boxes. It's sort of weird feeling of deja vu. Getting ready to move for college...part II 🙂 Only in reverse.

😆 I don't think I would have any friends if that was the case.

That is weird though... sometimes I do wonder what people on here sound like.

New Orleans has been good so far. It's rained both days (as in flooding when we got here, and a good drenching today). It's hot. We're at Dillard University, which is in the Gentilly neighborhood. There is a pretty wall along the back side of the campus that we were informed is one of the infamous levees. It broke about a mile north of we are, so pretty much everything around here was under 8 feet of water. The campus is being totally renovated, and there are still quite a few FEMA trailers around here. This neighborhood seems to be coming back - there aren't a lot of abandoned houses, but the group of kids I was with today was working on three overgrown lots with abandoned houses on them. That area, just a mile or two down the street from where we are, had quite a few abandoned houses. Besides the three in a row we are working on, the several across the street are as well.

You can still see the markings from the rescue crews on a bunch of the houses, and there are water lines on some buildings still. One of the groups went to an area that was still largely neglected. It's very sad, and it's something I just don't get. How do you just stop taking care of things? We needed to hose of the lawnmower before we put it back in my van (yuck!), and the houses we were working on obviously did not have water. The next-door neighbor's hose was literally 3 feet from the lawnmower, and the other adults in my group were reluctant to use it. I said, "we're doing them a HUGE favor by cleaning their neighbor's yard, the least they can do is let us use their hose for 5 minutes." The others agreed and the problem was solved. Well, that problem at least. There are plenty more where that one came from.
I'll try to post some pictures later.

So I understand this is many peoples' home and whatnot, but I can't imagine moving back after everything that happened there, and hurricane season looming, with little actually changed. Sure they'll fix the levies and rebuild everything eventually, but that place is still under sea level, and if mother nature wants to plow through again there isn't a whole lot that will stand in the way. But it's good that you're helping out cpa 👍🙂

So I've done all the goodbye stuff and am moving tomorrow morningish :scared: I'll be stopping overnight tomorrow in birmingham and then should get in to houston sometime wednesday evening! If there were any doubts before about how real everything was they're just about gone now! 😛

Not weird, it just sounds like snuff. So are we talking Juicy Fruit, your namesake, or a huge wad of Big League Chew??

That's easy. Here...http://youtube.com/watch?v=xN38uI2oKkA

I'm starting to think cpa either has or should have her own spot on the DIY network.

But it's good that you're helping out cpa 👍🙂

Quoted for truth. Good work 👍

Have a safe trip! I was just walking my dog and thinking, holy crap, I'm moving in a month... and I thought that was soon! When does your pre-matric program start?

haha, ok barry

Next monday, bright and early...sort of now wondering how great an idea it was. Then I remember that I'd have to work another month and get over it 😉

Pshhhh... namesake, of course! I buy a box of it that has either 9 or 12 packs I believe... lasts me a good while 😀

Mia Hamm, eh? I guess I'll take that... cause then I'd get to go home to the hubby everyday and greet him w/ a "Nomaaaaaaaaaah" (in Bostonian accent, of course).

There is a lot that is really, really hard to understand. How can people let things look like a lot of still does 3 years after the storm? How can you just walk away without taking any ownership or responsibility for your property? It's really astounding to me in a lot of ways. There is a definite class difference in the reaction to the tragedy.

I've uploaded my pictures from today to my Facebook account.😉

Good luck with the whole move thing. It's hard to believe that time is here already. I start orientation 4 weeks from today!!😱

I finally made the final move to my new computer... I'm being a nice sister and giving it to my brother since his is pretty old.

Now I need to buy a mouse and a bag for it... and I'm thinking about getting one of those keyboard protectors.

cpa, I looked at your pictures. The ones showing the water level on that building are insane 😱

:hello:greetings from mobile, alabama. This leg of the journey wasn't too bad. A little over 6 hours. Tomorrow will be a tad longer, like 7 1/2 I think. It was funny I was scanning the radio stations when I ran out of stuff to listen on my ipod and could only find country stations

And did you guys see all the new smiley faces? :woot:

 Just looked. Me gusta mucho. I esp. like the little woot man you used above. Oh and the dancing locks reminded me of the bananas (and you, of course, dd).

Greetings from New Orleans! Today was good - no injuries to report!:slap:

The new smilies are cute.

dd, I know what you mean on the radio station side - in Temple there are 3 varieties of music - country, Christian, and rap. The first two I can tolerate in small doses. The third - forget it! Call me old...you wouldn't be the first!

I didn't have internet all day or I'd have posted some more info on my trip. As it is, the batteries in my camera are dead, so I can't upload pics, and I'm dead, so I can't type much more. I'm just listening to teenagers tell each other that they stink. Hope they don't get too close to me. There's not much hot water or other water pressure, so I know I don't smell too fabulous myself!!

Haha when I started reading the list of types, I thought man cpa is totally down w/ rap... Sounds like someone is going to need an iPod or a bunch of cds.

Oh, and I won't call you old... kudu does enough of that 🙄

low on page 3 rescue!

I'm back from New Orleans. It was a great trip, but my allergies are seriously flared. Something about working in a horrid yard for several days, and walking through a house filled with mold.

I'm home until Wednesday, when I leave for the Rio Grande Valley. No rest for the weary! Orientation starts 3 weeks from tomorrow! Hope you guys are enjoying your holiday weekend!!
