out of state for texas schools

Hello OOS'ers,

I recently received an invitation to interview at UTMB and am very excited! To anyone who interviewed there or attends there, do you have any suggestions for a cheap, yet clean, hotel/motel to stay at? I won't be getting in to Galveston until late, so it seems to be the best option. Also, any tips for the interview? Anything I might ask my interviewer to take them by surprise (in a good way)? Thanks!

WOW! Someone actually asked a question in our quirky little thread. Kudu! This one's definitely for you!!

Twilight - if kudu doesn't show up this evening, you want to pm mykuduslewazulu. He's at UTMB.

When I interviewed there, stayed at a really nice historic hotel downtown. It was actually cheaper for a Thursday night than the Super8 (maybe it was $5 more). The best advice I can give you is to tuck a pair of walking shoes in your bag. You may have to walk. A LOT!! There are some 50+ buildings on the campus, and you may go to 47 of them.

Good luck!!

yeah kudu's your guy to answer this question. Though I'd agree with cpa on the walking stuff. Probably out of all the schools I interviewed at in texas utmb at the most in tour stuff. Houston had a lot, but they bussed us around.

So first block test is coming up in two and a half weeks :scared: I've been trying to keep up so I'm not cramming too much at the last minute, but do any of you guys ever just sit down to study and feel like the more you learn the more you don't know...Oh and I had my first skills session yesterday with the SP. I'm offically able to take vitals and inspect your hair, skin and nails 😀

Thank God we don't have block tests, but our second anatomy test is tomorrow - upper extremity. After going through the U of Michigan online practicals, I feel totally useless again. That's why I usually don't even go to practice sessions/help sessions - I'd rather maintain some comfort level of ignorance for as long as possible!!

Well, one of my cadaver mates stabbed me with a scalpel. They then put a Barbie bandaid on the wound. I'm not sure which part hurt worse. In better news, I just got off the parking wait list for the garagetop. Yes!

Hi! I don't have any special knowledge of hotel deals, I'm afraid. I stayed at the Super 8 and it was like $39 before taxes, but that was in the off season. Have you thought about seeing if any ofthe frats have a room open, or maybe staying with a student? I have a friend who owns a house and last year was housing interviewees. Dont know if he's doing it this year, but I can ask and I doubt he'd care how late you get in.

Make sure your guide gives you a tour of the GNL, I think it is or will soon be open for those....and yes, bring walking shoes.

Hi Kudu,

Thanks for the info about the frats. I think it'd be easier for me to stay in Motel 6 or Super 8, as you suggested. I'll definitely ask about the GNL, but would you mind telling me what it stands for? 😀

In terms of the interview, anything I should expect/look out for? I'm really dreading any intense healthcare system questions or questions asking me "if in this situation, what would you do?" Other than those, I feel pretty comfortable. Is it a laidback interview or should I expect to get grilled? I hope my OOS status doesn't make a difference lol.

Also, I absolutely LOVE seafood! I heard there are some nice seafood restaurants around/on the Strand (?). Both Gaido's and Casey's seemed to be particularly popular, although I heard they're very expensive and wouldn't be surprised if they were closed by the time I roll in (7 PM to IAH--> 9 PM to Galveston?). Would you happen to know any seafood places that will be open late? If there are any restaurants close to campus open late, I might hit one up when I get in.

Anyways, thanks again for your help. When you say walking shoes...you mean it'd be OK for me to bring my Nike's and pull off my dress shoes before the tour? I'd imagine I'd look pretty awkward in a suit with some tennis shoes on...

You'll be fine with the tennis. Lots of people do it. The oos stuff makes a pretty big difference unfortunately, though you've made it to the interview at least and that drastically narrows the odds in your favor. You just need to know they only take 10% oos, max, so only 22 or 23 people in the class can be oos. Try not to focus on your odds and just do the best you can in the interview. Extremely laid back by the way, so you should be fine there. Just be confident and personable :luck:

:hello:

Our first class tshirt came out really well... everyone really liked them!

I had a meeting w/ my advisory dean yesterday and she is helping me set up a meeting w/ the (in her words) "big kahunas" of eating disorders so I can hopefully do some research w/ them next summer. She said they'd be really excited to have me... so I'm excited!

Today, in the afternoon, we are doing an activity called Deaf Strong Hospital. We learn about the deaf community and then we become the minorities by being speaking patients w/ only deaf health care practitioners. So we had to learn our name in sign language so we know when they ask for us to come back, and then we were given a symptoms card and I'm guessing we have to relay that information on the card w/o speaking and go through the rest of the visit w/o speaking. It's going to be tough, but I think it will be really cool.

Haha sorry...the Galveston National Lab. Its the shiny (one of the few on campus haha) new building in the middle of campus across from the library.

Every interviewer is different, but I'd just expect them to be chill. Don't stress about questions. Just handle yourself maturely and honestly and you'll do fine.

Well, its an airport, so who knows exactly when you'll get out. For reference, downtown Houston is ~50min from UTMB. Gaidos and Casey's are on the Seawall, think they close around 9 or 9:30. You can find their menus, prices, and hours here....http://www.galveston.com/cuisine/cuisine_submit.asp?chkSeafood=Seafood&txtSearch=&butSearch2.x=18&butSearch2.y=14

Sure, no prob. You won't look awkward, you'll look incredibly smart.

The Deaf activity we did yesterday was totally awesome. Makes me really want to take our Deaf culture pathway now and learn sign language.

I learned how to place an IV this morning and got it on my first stick! 😀

That's sounds pretty cool. I've been toying with the idea of volunteering with the kids at the Shriner's Burns Hospital if I can work it in, I've heard its pretty rewarding stuff.

Dude, fyi if you get it in the first time it means you'll miss it the next ten😛.

Hope everyone's weekend was great! Mine was mostly spent in the pursuit of academic excellence 😛

So here's a couple of my favorite videos from retreat. They're pretty entertaining if you have a minute to spare 👍

Cast includes the dean and senior faculty in the first video.

I miss you guys

And I have a final on Thursday... I'm not nervous about it but feel that maybe I should be? I dunno.

First anatomy lab Friday! :scared:

First anatomy lab Friday! :scared:

You have a final already? Aren't you lucky!!

Don't worry about anatomy lab - it's not scary. The tests, however, are terrifying. :scared: I've never had test anxiety before, but we had a stupid little quiz on taking a history this morning (not in anatomy), and I found that I was shaky. Absolutely ridiculous!! I passed that one, at least!!

Kudu and dd - get out now while you still can!! Ike is calling your names!

Orb, :luck: tomorrow! We miss you too. the cadavers don't bite, although I wouldn't want to be there late at night on say Haloween haha. Midterms are next week for us....nice having one test a month haha.

UTMB just cancelled all classes for Fri...current projections that we'll get at least tropical storm force winds and storm surge. We'll see.

Well we still have classes scheduled. I'm thinking they won't cancel as it's suppose to be a late friday early saturday land fall. The "cone of uncertainty" is still quite large anyway, so who knows for sure. They did cancel the interview day friday though, which sort of blows as that was suppose to be one of my free lunch days 😡

Had a practice for our pracitice anatomy practical yesterday. Didn't do too bad, not great, but they did make the test a bit hard.

UTMB is evacuating all patients, mostly to Seton Medical in Austin, with some to Christus Santa Rosa in San An. No classes starting today. West end of Galveston (no seawall there) is under mandatory evac, as are parts of neighboring counties. Current track projects winds >120mph, 8-12 ft surge, and 8-10 in of rain for Galvy.

If you need a place to stay, let me know. I'm hoping San Antonio gets enough wind to give me some roof damage. Temple, just rain (though they're saying we could get 55 mph winds). My roof in Temple won't last through that, and the new one is still 2 weeks away.

Baylor closed at 3pm today and our block exam was cancelled too. we now have an entire week off.

i'm in the midst of hunkering down. got all my supplies and am going to pack up my important stuff tomorrow.

Hey Kudu,

I posted earlier about advice for UTMB, as I'm scheduled to be there next Friday for an interview. With interviews cancelled this week, does it look to be the same next week? I didn;t get a chance to call the office today, but I will tomorrow. Just looking for your take on things as you're right there.

Thanks,

TG

Calling tomorrow will do no good - they're gone. Even Kudu left. Galveston Island (which includes UTMB) is under mandatory evacuation orders. They were showing on the news that they were even kicking people out of the hospital. They evacuated as many patients as possible, discharged a bunch AMA, and kept a critical few.

Provided the damage is minimal (as we hope it will be), things should be back to normal by next Monday or Tuesday. The storm is actually supposed to be in Oklahoma by Saturday evening.

The airlines are being good about rescheduling flights if necessary, but I don't think it will be a problem. It just depends on what happens, and there is no way to know that before it does!

Wait until Monday or Tuesday, you should be able to know one way or the other quite easily!!

Alright, thanks so much for the info! I was getting nervous about what to do

Our classes weren't actually cancelled today, but one of our professors told us they were, so everyone left after lab at 1 so a large portion of the class missed our mandatory clinical applications course. Still usnure how it's going to work out next week.

I'm officially evacuating tomorrow morning, 7 a.m. flight. My parents convinced me to fly the coupe. I was actually a bit worried about losing power and losing an entire weekend of studying anyway. This blows, our first block test is week after next, and I hate it when my schedule is disrupted so 😡

our test is definitely off and we definitely don't have class next week. however, i was pretty confident about this test and was really in a good place study wise. we're not rescheduling either. our dean said we'd just make the next test cumulative. 😱

can you imagine? 12 straight weeks of material on one test?!

Left about 2, took me 8.5 hrs to get to mansfield....usually takes 4.5. No traffic till i got 35miles inland. Took an hour and a half just to get from exit 81 to exit 91 north of houston...ugh. Groups of ambulances passed me up along the way.

Thanks for the offer tbird, but its a good opp to visit fam....i wqlked in and they were li

Greetings from florida. So you may no longer have a school to go back to after all this is over according to the news gloom and doom kudu. At least you aren't facing, "certain death" 😛

God lacrosse, too bad you didn't get in down here you could be having all of this fun with us! 😉 Alright I'm attempting to be productive, so I'm going back to studying, sucks I'm losing a weekened from the anatomy lab 👎

Funny you say that... I was talking to my mom today and she was like "Aren't you glad you're not in Galveston??"

I hope you are all okay!

Liiiive, from galveston, its Saturday Night!! Ok, not really.

Uh, yeah just in case do you think there's room for one more med school in the tmc? The media coverage has sucked here. I loved the "certain death" quote as well. Everytime a dead raccoon floated by I thought they were going to start channeling Macbeth or quoting the Egyptian book of the dead.

It'll be our turn to worry about Orb in a few months....you think she's white now haha...How was your initiation to med school, 39? Cadaver lab i mean?

Cpa, how'd the roof turn out?

So classes are officially cancelled through at least tuesday, which is good, because I can't get home tomorrow with the airports being closed. Not sure how this is going to work out with first block exam, and numerous other issues they're going to have to work out. If they don't push back the exam we're going to be looking at cramming 3 dissections into one day, having over half the class doing their Intro to clinical medicine examinations, and other crap I can't even think of right now. On the bright side people I talked to at UT housing said we're some of the few people to still have water and power 👍

Any news yet kudu on UTMB's damage? From what I hear it could be weeks before power is back in galveston. Would they just give you guys the time off and make it up in the summer, or possibly ship you off to different schools like they did during Katrina?

It'll be our turn to worry about Orb in a few months....you think she's white now haha...How was your initiation to med school, 39? Cadaver lab i mean?

We are actually getting some of your winds up here as we speak... I think I'd rather take snow than a hurricane though. And don't make fun of my whiteness! 😡

Cadaver lab was good... we did the superficial back. I'm the only group of 5 since we have a grad student taking the class as well. 4 would have been nice, but oh well. I have 3 boys in my group, so they wanted to make the first cuts, of course. Once they reflected the skin, I got to reflect half of the trap and find the accessory nerve (which looks like fascia to me... ugh). A lot of people actually cut their accessory nerves since they thought it was fascia. Then we took a look at the rhombus major/minor and the lats and that was that. We are going deeper tomorrow... I can't help but read this dissector and be totally lost though! 😕

On a lovelier note... my boyfriend gets back from Brazil tomorrow so I can actually talk to him (he was in Argentina, Iguassu Falls and Brazil for 9 days) and he's coming to Roch Thursday 😀

not sure what they'll do yet dd, and i doubt they really know either. My understanding is that the mayor said at her press conference today that it was doubtful anyone would be allowed onto the island this week. The whole place has to be covered in muck, and fixing water, sewer, and power is going to be a pain.

Orb, its free advice, but i always found the dissector to be more of a hindrance than a help unless it was something complicated. You have an atlas and a list of the structures to find, so trust yourself and go for it. Use blunt dissection whenever possible, its faster, safer, and you're less likely to damage structures unintentionally. Too bad i'm not at your tank...i'm so good with props. Just last week i was playing bass guitar on the brachial plexus.....

Too bad i'm not at your tank...i'm so good with props. Just last week i was playing bass guitar on the brachial plexus.....

Yay brachial plexus... we talked about that today in lecture and I actually understand what a plexus is now.

Today in anatomy lab we did deeper back muscles and spinal cord. I was the first to start cracking the spine... so weird feeling. The spinal cord is pretty cool though... never would have guessed.

You guys have actual tanks that you lower the bodies into each time? We just have tables.

Oh so last night we had a really bad wind storm... knocked out power from about 1 AM till 4:30 this afternoon. I didn't fall asleep till about 2 since I kept thinking my windows were going to break. Needless to say, I was exhausted spending all day at class and then ICM. I had a standardized patient today and I was trying to stay upbeat during it but the lady had such a quiet, soothing voice it was difficult. A lot of the time people take time outs from their interviews to ask for suggestions of where to go next and I stopped today and people started saying suggestions and I was like "Oh I know where I'm going... I just needed a quick break" Luckily when I came home I had power (I had just gone grocery shopping yesterday) and that kinda gave me a second wind. Hooray spinal nerves! :hardy:

UTH is closed until Thursday.

Next monday actually. Which actually throws our schedule to hell 😡

They have absolutely no idea what they are going to do about our block test apparently either. Our anatomy professor sent out an email more or less asking if we had any ideas

On a very positive note, I have electiricy, water, and cable! It seems to be very hit or miss as some people have it and others don't.

Yeah, the bods are kept in steel tanks with levers that raise/lower them into the formalin. Tables? How are they preserved?

As reportedin the tx thread, we got an email....the earliest, most optimistic date for classes to resume is oct 6, with more delays possible depending on living conditions, etc. might have classes elsewhere. I bet our cadavers are getting eaten by mold as is the rest of the island i'm sure.

give us an htown damage report if you're back dd!

where is cpa?

Yikes! I'm here!! Life is boringly normal here - except that the weather has turned gorgeous!! It was 52 this morning.

None of us had damgage down here, but my brother in Cincinnati had all his trees shredded - some big trees splintered, and my in-laws in Columbus are among the million people in Ohio with no power.

I guess I'll be happy that my biochem test went off as planned this morning (I hope I passed - yuck!), and that I can sit with my back door open and watch all the kitty cats play on the trap I have set for them...

Yeah... um... I have no idea. But they are on tables. That's all I know. And I thought I wasn't that stinky after lab, but today I passed someone who put their scrubs on to go study in lab and I was like dang, set in stentch.

Oct. 6th? Wow. Has your school told you anything about making up the time?

Houston's not horrible. Could have been, better, but definitely could have been a lot worse. As I was driving home yesterday I saw a lot of places without power, a biliboard knocked down, and lots of random damage. Med center is fine. It's opening to everyone thursday, though were allowed back in already (I spent the day in our LRC streaming videos from last year, just in case). Classes still won't be back in session 'til monday.

That really blows regarding that oct. 6th return date kudu. Any talk about being shipped off to other schools in the mean time? One of our emails from a professor mentioned something about utmb students, 'possibly' being around.

OK, the kitty cat story. So I had a rodent a couple of weeks ago. It was a one-off incident, and it has gone away, but I thought I might try feeding some of the feral cats around here for good measure. I did not, however realize just how many cats there are.

Friday before I left for San Antonio, I discovered the reason one cat kept hissing at me was 4 tiny little kittens in a nest. I was not able to get to them on Friday, so I brought back a trap and a crate from San Antonio. Yesterday momma was not around, so I nabbed the kittens (eyes open, but not leaving nest) and took them to the city shelter. I also picked up a bigger trap, since mine is really only kitten-size.

So yesterday afternoon I caught a cat, but it wasn't one of the ones on my radar scope, so I let it go. Probably shouldn't have. Overnight, I caught another one that I think may belong to someone, so I let it go, too. This afternoon, however, I caught one of the momma cats, so it is now in the trap in my garage waiting to go to the shelter tomorrow morning. (2 of the 3+ kittens are weaned, I saw her boxing the other one this morning.) Then I caught a cute little kitten who is mean as snot, and put him into the crate, and caught another kitten who I think is one of the offspring of the momma cat. He's in my kitchen in the little trap raising holy hell.

You have to have some distraction from biochemistry!! Only 2 more momma cats and a dozen or so kittens to go! The shelter people are going to love me!🙄

OK, the kitty cat story....

hahaha I don't even know what to think of that. I got lost w/ all the different cats. We have a ton around here, but they belong to people on my street and they just roam around. I named one of them Whiskers because he's super curious (SNL reference, anyone?)... he will prance out to me when I'm walking past and then follow me for awhile. He used to do it at least once a day, but now its just occasionally... so cute though... wahhhh I miss my puppy!! 🙁 I was talking to my mom yesterday and she put me on speakerphone and I said my dog's name and she started whining

Time to learn about the shoulder muscles...

None of these are particularly friendly. I got one (a cute orange kitten) to come into my kitchen this morning, but he freaked when I closed the door. When he started eyeing my Roman shades as an escape route, I opened the door!

I knew I had a problem when I realized I had "Mittens" in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL. XS went to the shelter yesterday, S is in my kitchen in a crate.

I have also taken care of XS, S, and L of "Blackie". Except that there is a pair of S, and an XL version.

Yesterday I counted 8 cats on my stoop at once!😱

dang. Galvy instituted a "look and leave policy" yesterday and i was set to go down this morning but they suspended it because the traffic backed up for miles within a few hours.

i don't know what utmb is going to do with us exactly. We're supposed to get another email later this week.

Good lord cpa, why are you taking them to the shelter? You ARE the shelter haha. If you find a "tuxedo" or flamepoint in s or xs, can i put it on layaway? Its so hard finding my size🙂.

I'm so sorry. I hate limbo almost more than biochem. There are a whole lot of people with a whole lot of unanswered questions right now. At least I have some security, and I know what I'm doing in the next hours and days (taking cats to the shelter...)

I'm eating some peanut M&Ms I snagged from the alumni office a few minutes ago and thinking of you guys.🙄

The XS and S are primarily black, with a bit of brown - I don't think the XS was a tuxedo, but it's momma, who is in my custody, would qualify. As to why I'm taking them to the shelter...they need to stop having babies in my yard. I'd fix them, but I'm scared of them. :scared: They're mean!

Honestly i'm not too concerned about school...much more curious/worried about my apt and the stuff in it. I left in a hurry and am living out of a small suitcase. My fam lives in the boonies without broadband or satelite, so i've been writing and surfing the news from my phone all this time. I need to get back there and check it out, grab clothes and valuables, etc.

I hope you get back in soon, Kudu, and I hope everything is as you left it. I assume you have renter's insurance since you are of age?😉

My cat count for the day is 3. I caught the momma cat I was hoping to catch, the little tiger kitten, and one of the other little tabbies. It's mean as snot. I actually got it confined to my garage and thought "how hard can it be to catch a little tiny kitten?" Stupid me. 15 minutes later I got him as he was trying to climb the wall, and the turd bit me!! I had gardening gloves on to protect me from those razor sharp kitten claws, but the turd bit me through the glove. Drew blood!! I did manage to crate him, though.

If you're keeping count, that's

2 momma cats - 1 tabby (mittens), 1 black (tuxedo)
4 itty bitty kittens - offspring of mittens
2 just older than itty bitty kittens - 1 tabby, 1 black - offspring of tuxedo
2 small kittens - 1 tabby, 1 tiger

Still remaining - 1 just older than itty bitty kitten, black
2 small kittens, tabby
1 black suspect tom
1 tabby suspect grandma or tom (one that I caught and released previously)
1 tabby/white suspect that doesn't look as wild as the others. (previously caught and released)

Update...just snagged the little black one. Hope he doesn't bite me like the last one did!

 cpa you make me laugh. Good luck w/ the rest!

Brachial plexus today... I'll be thinking of you, kudu, the whole time 😉

My boyfriend comes to visit today! 😀

That's hilarious cpa  I'm reminded of pet cemetary for some reason....

So we offically have had our block 1 exams cancelled! 😱 The best solution that was come to by the head honchos was to combine 12 weeks of material into one test!! Which means my entire first semester of medical school is determined by two exams and a final...
