out of state for texas schools

That's hilarious cpa  I'm reminded of pet cemetary for some reason....

So we offically have had our block 1 exams cancelled! 😱 The best solution that was come to by the head honchos was to combine 12 weeks of material into one test!! Which means my entire first semester of medical school is determined by two exams and a final...

Oh, that would scare me to death. I've never really experience test anxiety - but I do now. I can't imagine having 12 weeks worth of material - 3 is horrible enough. How does that work, then? We don't have block tests...do you have one test that covers all subjects, or tests in each subject?

ok, so Baylor is back in business. the school opened on Tuesday.

man, our block one test has been rescheduled for Thursday. yikes!

as for the question about the block test, we've kind of had random lectures for the first month making up what they call "core concepts." everything we covered thus far will be on the exam.

we also have two practicals histo and anatomy each counting for 10% of the block grade. the exam will count for 20% of our fall I grade. they did it this way so that if you bomb it won't show up that way on your transcripts or whatever if you do well later.

That sounds like a better situation than we are in. Oh and I heard you guys are using our lab tomorrow for a review session. If you happen to open tank B6, that's our baby 😉

We have individual tests for each subject, and they're all on the same week spread out, so usually one test a day (unless a lab is associated with the class then it's the practical and written in the same day). It's pretty much just like a finals week only you have it 3 times during the year. It has it's ups and downs, the best benefit really being we pretty much have a whole week to decompress and not worry about school after tests are over before getting back into it.

I don't think it's going to be quite as bad as I imagined. A few of the classes, like Biochem are going to split the material between blocks 2 and 3 so I guess it'll be more like 8 or 9 weeks of material per test, which maybe is a little better...

there's a review tomorrow, and I don't know about it?! 😱

Here's a copy of the email, I guess it's like a combined uth/baylor review, but seeing as we no longer have exams next week I'd be quite surprised if any of our students attend.

The UTH/Baylor PM&R Interest Group will be having an anatomy review for MSI's this Saturday 1-4pm. I have received permission from Dr. Cleary to hold the review in the UTH Anatomy Lab. Could you send the below info to the rest of the MSI class?

So I was scrolling back through some earlier pages cause I remembered you guys listing some mneumonics for the shoulder/arm... I know the Real Texans Drink Cold Beer for the brachial plexus, but what is the DR CUBAM one stand for?

Its the physical manifestation of nerve damage followed by the nerve responsible.

Drop wrist (or wrist Drop)
Radial

Claw hand
Ulnar
Bishop's hand (aka hand of Benediction)
Ape hand
Median

🙂

How are things going kiddo? Did Bryan get tired of hearing about nerves/breathing in/out for the steth?

Ahhh yes... those were just starting to be taught.

Things are okay... I feel so overwhelmed! Especially because there are always the people that seem to end up right next to me that already know all the anatomy stuff, or already know all the histo stuff. It's annoying. I hate when people yell answers out so quickly... I'm like okay, maybe I didn't know right away, but give me a second.

He's good... he visited this weekend and it was great (minus the lack of studying part 🙄). It was sad to see him leave, but the show must go on, I suppose. Oh, and he didn't have to breathe in and out for me just yet... we start physical exam tomorrow 😉

Will Texas schools reject OOS applicants early if they aren't interested in them or do they just give them the silent treatment? When do most OOS applicants interview? I haven't been complete very long at all, but it would be nice to know the procedure since I thought I heard somewhere that for OOS applicants the Texas schools try to interview everyone by like November (not sure if this is true at all).

 i use RUM West Coast Tequila University for that one.

Radial - wrist drop
ulnar - claw hand
median - thenar atrophy, ulnar deviation

Texas schools are the epitome of the silent treatment. I still haven't been rejected by UTMB from last year!! My understanding, too, is that they interview OOS right along with instate - there is no differentiation during interviews. The only real difference is that OOS acceptances can go out 10/15 (a month earlier than instate), and that OOS do not participate in the match.

Good luck!

CPA is right, as always 😉

It is better if you can get interviewed earlier on, but you can get interviews all the way through the end. I got mine at houston like the second to last interview day in January. If you were just complete I would give it some time too before getting on the panic train. That train doesn't leave until late november early december 😛

so how bad is it, kudu??

I've been thinking about you today...along with everyone else.

Not a scratch! Water, sewer, and cell service are on, but no power or internet. Nasty surprise in the frig. Was hard to get in the building because the lock been soaked in flood water. Layer of mud slime on the 1st floor and on our mailboxes, which are chest high. Store owners pulling their ruined invetory out onto the sidewalk. Drove by my old 1st floor apt...didn't do so well, nor did a friend's house on the west end(no seawall there). Strange seeing boats on the side of the road. Piles of debris everywhere...once they clear that Galvy's elevation should rise about 10ft. Lots of crews working. Vast majority of places are closed. Curfew still in effect. Nearly every building out on a pier is gone, including the Hooters they just added last year (very Old Testament haha). Mayor is asking the feds for 2.4 bil, 600 mil for utmb. I'm back in dfw till they get power, but at least i don't have to bite my nails now.

About 20 students are doing rotations at Scott & White.

Its a double edged sword. Its really cool to be around people who are exceptionally smart, if as yet untempered by life, but sometimes it sucks not being the smart kid class anymore. And of course med schools have a knack for attracting people that can be a little too academically... aggressive, or is it aggressively academic??? Oh man, you think its bad now, just wait till it gets too cold for them to do anything but stay inside and study.

Houston doesn't seem too bad in the way of having kids rubbing in your face how smart they are, not to say there aren't a few 🙄

So we got emails today asking us to house UTMB students, I'm assuming it's 3rd and 4th who will be doing some rotations around here? Weekend is almost here! We're having a pseudo block part in celebration of having cancelled tests  I just need to get through my cardio and pulmonary exam tomorrow...

Got my first OOS interview invite (unofficial but the official one is coming) from UT Houston yesterday- so they are still looking at us OOSers my file wasn't complete until Sept 10 because of late MCAT to... good luck other OOS applicants- I really want to get back to Texas!

Congrats. What's the old bumper sticker....I wasn't born in Tx but I got here as fast as I could?

Happy RH/New Year Orbit.

I just read back. dd...12 weeks of material?? Gulp. Hope they give you guys some sort of nice curve.

It's not quite that bad, as they've divided up the material between 2nd and 3rd blocks rather than just lumping it all into 2nd. I am getting seriously concerned though as we've just started going over crainial stuff and I'm wondering how on earth I'm going to have the time to learn cranial nerves in anatomy, all the oxphos pw's, and everything else that's new along with reviewing block 1 material on the test...:scared: Not only that, they decided to put some practice tests together so we can evaluate our study techinques, but I'm not going to have time to study up on material like I'm taking a test and properly test how well I've been doing. All it's going to do is probably stress me out!

i need some advice regarding the interview process. i'm oos and have been quite blessed to have been invited for most of the tx schools i applied to. i have a few interviews (tx and others) lined up in the next few weeks and missing (a lot!) of class in the process.

now, i've just received an invite for utsa (november) and was wondering, as an oos applicant, if it would be worth it to go to it since it will be considered a bit late in the interview season. though i realize that school shouldn't be too much of a priority in this applying to med school business, if i know that my chances of getting in (by virtue of interviewing late and being oos) are slim, i may turn it down since i'd like to keep up my grades, too.

any thoughts would be much appreciated!!! 🙂

I say, unless you have an acceptance in hand, take the interview. You don't want the cycle to end w/o an acceptance and think "What if I would have kept that interview?" Just my $.02.

Hi friends... block 1 test (anatomy/phys/histo/embryo) coming up on Monday! eeek! They put out a practice anatomy practical and histo practical today... did better than I thought I would. Histo was somewhat frustrating because I knew exactly what it was but couldn't get the words out on the paper cause of all the fancy schmancy names of things. I was looking at a picture of something and the question asked what is the function and I just stood there, blank... my friend came up and was like come on, you know this. And I was like uh nope, nope I don't... and he goes come on, what does it do?? And I just go "OHHH!!!!" haha oh, what a change in a sentence can do for you 👍

Calgal, welcome! You go to every int until you get in somewhere, then you can get choosy. I don't know how many int's you have or where they're at, but paradoxically to your reasoning above, its because your chances are slimmer as an oos that you need to go as many as possible. Why care about the grades now....they've served their purpose? Its go time! G'luck, and don't hesitate to ask us ?'s...we've got 3 tx schools represented + 1 conscientious objector.

Not-so-fun Ike facts:

Financial damage to utmb estimated at $610 mil. About 750k sqft flooded. No inpatients for another 4-6 weeks. Class is now going to start Oct 20. The west side of the city was hit hard...accounts for 10-15% of the pop, but half the tax base.

Hey Kudu,

How is UTMB looking? I interviewed there, and was wondering whether you knew if there would be any decisions given on October 15th, considering Ike and all?

Thanks!

thanks so much for the welcome + advice! i've decided to take the interview and looking forward to it!

quick travel-related question- how far is utsa from the airport? are there busses/cabs that would easily take me from the airport to the school?

I haven't heard anything about their plans. Its a good ? though. I'm skeptical they could change the date...it'd only work if all the schools did, otherwise you'd think they would be at a competitive disadvantage. I'm pulling this out of my rear, but if i had to guess i bet they go ahead and give offers on the 15th, maybe just not as many. You might email admissions, dr thomas would be good. Thats a legit question, and i think they'd be straight with you.

Can't help ya here, as i didn't int there. A couple people did though, or you could just google🙂. I'm sure taxis at least will be available. You made right decision, btw. Just so ya know, i have an uncle on the adcom there and i've been eyeing this large lcd tv at Best Buy......😉.

First, semantics. You're going to UTHSCSA, not UTSA. They are two different places, about 8 miles apart. 😉 You'd much rather go to UTHSCSA than UTSA - believe me, I've been there.

UTHSCSA is about 10 miles from the airport. Not too far. They are both on the north side of town. I would go for a cab rather than a bus. There are several hotels near the school that will also arrange a shuttle for you. I think most people stay at a hotel right by the school. The name escapes me at the moment, but I can see it in my head (sounds a lot like anatomy!!). It's Home something, I think. Look in the interview feedback forum and you can find it.

Good luck!

Cat update!!

Previously:

2 momma cats - 1 tabby (mittens), 1 black (tuxedo)
4 itty bitty kittens - offspring of mittens
2 just older than itty bitty kittens - 1 tabby, 1 black - offspring of tuxedo
2 small kittens - 1 tabby, 1 tiger

Which left:

1 just older than itty bitty kitten, black (Captured)🙂
2 small kittens, tabby (1 captured🙂, 1 MIA possibly captured without my knowledge)
1 black suspect tom (turns out there were 2 - captured🙂, but now there's another one!)🙁
1 tabby suspect grandma or tom (one that I caught and released previously) Still at large
1 tabby/white suspect that doesn't look as wild as the others. (previously caught and released) Still at large, but it's counterpart was captured and removed.

1 injured kitten, absolutely adorable, removed to a vet.

Yes, that makes 16 or so cats removed from the reproductive cycle!

Ugh, I'm an idiot. I just realized last night that all of the Texas secondaries were due today (I thought they were going to screen the primaries and then send out secondaries) :smack: I finished them all today, but A&M has an Oct. 1 deadline for their certification page & fee. Should I go ahead and mail it anyway? I'd hate for them to cash my check and then toss out my app.

I'd give them a call. The people in the office are very nice, and they will tell you straight out, one way or the other. I really don't know the answer.

Good luck!

I think I had a couple of nightmares about missing deadlines back then. She's right, you should call tomorrow with the sexiest voice you can muster....g'luck.

Thanks again for all of the advice! Is Country Hearth the hotel you are thinking about? That, Courtyard, and Best Western are the 3 they mentioned in an email...

Yes, Country Hearth. It is right down the hill from the school. They (I believe) provide a shuttle. As I recall, it is not worth trying to drive from there to park at the medical school.

Good luck!

I asked an appropriate person today, and, I'm sorry to say, you are s.o.l.🙁 I was told they make no exceptions.

Hopefully you'll have better luck elsewhere. I'm so sorry.

Wahhhhhh first anatomy/phys/histo/embryo block exam Monday... :scared:

Wahhhhhh first anatomy/phys/histo/embryo block exam Monday... :scared:

I feel you...we had our anatomy head and neck exam, including embryo (all 4 hours worth) today, and we have biochem on Tuesday. We don't do block exams, but they are moving our exams closer and closer together working toward block exams.:scared:

Ours are called block exams, but they aren't truly block exams, at least the type I think of. Like at Mizzou, they just did a whole week of exams for their 1st block. The class I'm in right now is 12 weeks long but split into 4 "blocks" based on what we are learning. And each test has 3 different aspects to it... 1 hour histo practical, 1 hour anatomy practical, 2 hour physio/anatomy/embryo written test. I'm taking practice tests of each type and not doing too shabby, so I'm trying to reassure myself... as if that was possible 🙄

Hmmm...at the rate things are moving down here, you guys will be giving me advice about what's coming up in med school🙁.

Called my apt manager today...he's in the hospital. Didn't get all the details, but around the time of the hurricane his girlfriend got incredibly sick. He carried her down the stairs and dislocated his shoulder. She was airlifted from utmb to austin, and spent time in the icu...she'll be ok. He somehow got necrotizing fasciitis, and lost part of his middle finger.

necrotizing fasciitis?!

that's serious.

OK, so I'm sitting here trying desperately to learn biochem, and my mom calls and wants to come give me a flu shot and a hug before she goes to work. Despite the fact that we're getting them on the 15th at school, I said ok.

So she came over, jabbed the needle in my arm, and said, "Oh. It's empty. It all leaked out."😡 See if I ever let her stick a needle in my arm again.

Next year, it's my turn for revenge!! She has great veins to practice starting an IV in.😉 Happy studying!

One more thing...opinion time. We're talking about a Christmas major road trip...New England or Northern California??

NoCal! I love the New England area, but I'm sure you don't want to have to worry about your plans getting ruined by a blizzard! All I know is *I* wouldn't want to drive around up there that time of year... but then, I suppose this is the "OOS TX schools" thread, so maybe a little snow is no big deal to you guys 🙂

cpa is actually from TX... but I would totally choose New England. Don't be scared of snow! I'll be able to tell you all about it in just a bit over a month most likely 🙄

Test tomorrow! Woot! 👍

Survived the 4 hour test 😀

Kudu... where oh where did your M&M go?

It'll be back...it's how you'll know I'm back from my involuntary sojurn.

UTMB is in a world of hurt financially....they're going to need serious dough from the state and feds, and even then the clinical enterprise is going to be much different I suspect.

By "surviving" I assume you scored between 97 and 99??? 🙂.

Hey does anyone know how Texas schools notify OOS applicants of acceptances (email, phone call, etc)? And how soon after the 15th? I had 3 interviews and am going crazy waiting to find out!
