out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is that school still considers out of state interviews?

I believe all Texas schools have completed interviews. Most end just before Christmas. Sorry to bear bad news.

Valentine's Day is for suckers. Not to mention that it's the day after my birthday, which is always a downer.

So I was over on your turf today 😉

We are required to attend one of the infectious disease ground rounds you guys have every wednesday and write a paper on it for immuno. The cases presented were interesting...not looking forward to writting the paper though 👎

hey laina I've been too busy with biochemistry/physiology to be my usual creepy self, but its valentine's day, so here's a teddy bear doctor. Where are we going for dinner?

Hooray for being done w/ my test!

Time to go to the peds office and look at kid's ears and not know what is wrong... 🙄

Hope everything is going well, guys. We had a physiology test on respiratory yesterday, and it was brutal! I usually leave with 15 minutes or more to spare, and a good portion of the class is gone. Yesterday I left with 3 minutes to spare, and half the class was still in there.:scared:

I have a new dilemma! I am going to be doing a 4-week preceptorship (paid, barely) this summer through a state program. The coordinator left me a voice mail today saying that she has located a preceptor for me in San Antonio, at UTHSCSA, for the dates that I want. I went to the website to see if I could find any more information on her, and scanning through the list of preceptor names (as I had done before), I saw the name of a friend of mine. I did not see her name before, so I'm not sure if it was just added, but I doubt it. My only thought is that she uses a different last name professionally, but I still would have seen it.

How well do I know this friend? Well, I'm sharing a hotel room with her in Waco this weekend.🙄 Thing is...a) she kind of drives me nuts - she's a bit of a space cadet; b) I'm not entirely sure she's still doing it as she recently switched from UTHSCSA to the VA; and c) the other doctor is actually at UTHSCSA, on-campus, apparently, and that could get me an edge if I decide to attempt to transfer next year (still undecided).

So, do I accept the placement that's been made, play dumb, and forget the whole thing? ask the preceptor to switch me to this other doctor (who, by the way, qualifies as rural, meaning an extra 250 whole dollars to me:laugh:)? talk to the other doctor this weekend, as I'm sure it will come up, and see if we can work out an informal preceptorship for later in the summer? jump off a cliff somewhere?

Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Do you want to do it with her or not? If yes, then talk to her about it and try to get it switched. If not, then tell her you've been assigned one already if it comes up. There, I just smashed the Easy button for ya...🙂.

Long time no see guys...Happy belated Bday Jolie! Hope everyone is doing well in their studies!

Orbit, don't kid yourself...if I had spammed this thread you'd have staggered out onto the frozen tundra you call home, wailing, cursing Providence, and rending your garments😎. Hey, did your undergrad research ever get published?

Went to Mardi Gras Fri and Sat (4 blocks from my apt). Good times. Not sure what to do with all these beads...thought about cutting and splicing them into a curtain for my doorless closet haha.

Ok, so an update…been through the entire BLS occupational handbook (I'm very thorough🙂), plus other career sites, talked to students, advisors, etc. Here's a few of my thoughts along the way careerwise…

Genetic Counselor…very cool, but I've pretty much written it off. Doesn't make sense financially and admission is very competitive for the 6 or 7 spots that open in Tx each year (that's not a typo).

Watchmaker…simple math. Not enough dough.

Electrician…4-5 year apprenticeship starting at about 50% of full wage. Not too bad overall. Concerned about how my arthritic foot would respond, but this is in the running.

Physical Therapy Assistant…kinda cool, and good job market, but questionable at best financially at this point.

Speech Pathology…the more I learn about it, the less I'm interested in the subject matter. Also, watching speech therapy sessions online makes it seem pretty boring, though it is a diverse and probably rewarding, if frustrating, field. I'd have to take ~15 hrs of prereq's to be admitted to most grad programs.

Flight Attendant…airline industry is very cyclical unfortunately, and competition is fierce for these jobs. I've already applied for one with AirTran, based in Atlanta, but none of the big boys are hiring. Low starting pay it seems, but not too bad once you get into it. Near free travel as a perk, and training is short. Might be something fun to do for awhile.

Teaching (in general)…it's the first thing I thought of. Been looking for things like teacher's assistant and librarian aide positions to get some exp with kids to see if I like ‘em. I could go back at night and get an MA/MS in subject X and teach JC as well. Lots of options. I might move back to DFW in a few months if I find things more favorable up there.

Others…librarian, sign language interpreter, non-profits, for-profits haha. Any old work-a-day management job.

It's actually being sent off tomorrow for review by the journal! I'm really excited... I made some edits last week and it's a pretty awesome paper... and pretty awesome to see my name on it 😀

Looks as if you're leaning towards teaching... I think you'll enjoy it. As for the flight attendant thing... would that be bad w/ your foot? Sign language is cool, I'm taking a class starting after spring break!

Watched the pediatrician cath a 2 year old girl today... fastest procedure I've ever seen!!

Yes! I knew I felt a disturbance in the Force. Don't hide your light dude, pm or fb me the name of the article and journal if it makes it.

I think my foot would be alright as an FA, it's pretty light duty and the hours tend to be light as well. Yeah, I just tossed sign interpreting in there. Sounds cool...I need to look a little more into it, but I'd guess the job market would be tight for that sort of thing...except maybe around Rochacha.

I'm really disappointed. Winter is almost over, and you haven't squealed nary an iota about the harshness of life on Moonbase Roach. Haven't you noticed on your way to school every day that your neighbor has been walking their dog in the same spot and stance since early Nov??

haha I'm surviving! It's honestly not awful... not something I would wanna live w/ for the rest of my life, but fine for now 🙂

Oh, and winter almost over? Maybe in a normal climate... 🙄

Gee, as I drove to class this morning (after having the back door open all morning to let in the nice spring air), I saw ash trees, mountain laurels, tulip trees, and red buds all in bloom. 🙂 Spring has arrived in Texas!😉

Haha! I just noticed that the lame advice I gave you was after the weekend in question:smack:. So how was Waco with the space cadet? Did she make you don a Star Trek uniform? And did you like it?

Yeah, I won't tell Orbit that it's almost 10:45pm in galvy and 67 degrees. Not me. I wouldn't do that to a friend. Nuh uh.

Man, I'm so not jealous. I remember that even my car sweat from the humidity when I was down there.

The weekend was good (except that my son lost his retainer). I didn't get to talk to the space cadet one-on-one, so it never came up. She's working at the VA now, so it wouldn't happen anyway.

She did, however, try to steal my glasses. 😱 They look not unlike hers, and she had left hers at Chili's earlier (got them back after they closed). She saw mine sitting on the nightstand in the hotel room and stuck them in her purse so she wouldn't lose them again. Fortunately I left the room before she did, so they didn't walk out with her!!

Oh, it's 68 here at 9:15 am. Heading for 83 today!

So this thread is a little difficult to navigate...but I'm wondering about the chances of being accepted to Texas schools as an out of state applicant. I'm from kansas, have family from Texas and would really like to attend somewhere in the state. Right now I'm mostly interested in Baylor, but some of the other schools sound great, too. Should I even bother with TMDSAS?
Thanks!🙂

So the actual percentages of out of state (OOS) acceptances are pretty low (with Baylor having one of the higher percentages since is is private I think, but still gets a lot of funding from the state), but I would say to definitely apply to TMDSAS if you think you might want to end up in Texas. I'm from OOS, but with some ok ties to the state, and I made it in and I'm really happy about it. Other kids from my school have made it in as well, and some of them didn't even have any previous ties (they are Texans at heart, they just hadn't figured it out yet!).

Note that Baylor doesn't use TMDSAS though. 😉 All the UT schools, TTU, A&M and co. do. If you are at all interested in the TMDSAS schools, do it. It's worth the time and the money, in my opinion.

I am planning on taking a year off before I start medical school. I was thinking of doing AmeriCorps and planning on staying in Kansas to do so...would it be worth it to move down to Texas for AmeriCorps in order to get residency? Would that even work?

That's a good question. I guess it would have to come down to whether you would rather stay in Kansas (close to family/friends/etc.) or if it's not a big deal to move somewhere else for a year. I don't know a ton about it, but my guess is that being a Texas resident would definitely help an applicant get into a Texas school. The school I got into is around 90% Texans I think? so I was shooting for a spot in only 10% of the class. For most Texas schools it's somewhere in that same range for OOS (10-15%, 25%-ish for Baylor, though).

Hope that helps a bit. Also, wait for responses from some of the regulars around here. They chat about their schooling and trips and the like and it can get a bit confusing, but when someone asks a question in the thread they respond quite quickly with some great advice and insights. 🙂 I've definitely been helped a number of times.

Definitely apply TMDSAS. It covers everybody in Tx except Baylor, and it's dirt cheap...as can be seen by the website. Baylor generally hovers around 75% instate per class. The rest ususally above 90%, per Tx law. I don't know the rules for residency, but I don't think it's too hard and if you could gain residency that would most certainly help your chances quite a bit, if you really want to do school here. Also keep in mind that if you get a $1000 scholarship from a school as an oos'er, you get instate tuition.

Here's stats for entering class 2007, except for the new school in El Paso and Baylor, which uses AMCAS...http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/Final%20Statistics%20Report%20-%20EY07%20-%20Medical.pdf

EDIT: This might help with the residency questions...http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/residency/resfaq.html

The m&ms? Confusing and off topic? Neeever.😀 Gald we could help. Where'd you end up? Hard to keep track of all you guys.

Forgive my stupidity, but what's the appeal of Texas schools for out of staters? Just good schools, or something else?

Kudu, so far I've been accepted to UT Houston, and with the OOS waitlist I'm waiting on some other possible Texas places. I've also got some AMCAS schools I'm waiting on, but (and this leads nicely into a response to circulus) I'd have to think hard about them due to financial reasons....the price of the Texas schools just can't be beat! Add to it that Texas schools are very solid and it's an incredibly attractive combination!

For example, my in-state tuition at my state school would be higher than OOS tuition for Texas. Add in the possibility of me getting in-state tuition at Texas, and then add in that I've lived in Texas for a few years of my life, and you'll find that I'm quite eager to head back south! 😉

For out of state students, there's really no reason not to apply through TMDSAS because you can apply to a half dozen schools for less than one AMCAS school. If you combine that with the low number of out of state students who actually apply because most people are scared off by the 90% rule you've got a decent shot, especially if you have state ties and decent numbers.

Great advice guys! I will definitely apply to Texas schools mostly for the great prices and education, but I think I'll keep my Kansas residency where I know I'll have a strong chance of acceptance. I'm not ready to lose that option, yet, but I'll still go TMDSAS as well.

Thanks so much!

Good schools, it's Texas, relatively low cost-of-living, and dirt-cheap (comparatively) tuition. Did I mention that it's Texas? Things are blooming here already.

Welcome back, M&M Kudu! My peeps will be in your neck of the woods this time next week.

Since Texas schools have the 90% in-state law, what's the competition like? Would someone with a 3.5 and a 30 MCAT stand a chance, or is it like 3.8 35+ territory?

From my experience (which is quite limited, n=about 5 people that I know), it's somewhere in between... but obviously the higher the better! 🙂 Whatever the school's averages are, add a bit to make sure you're competitive. Maybe around a 3.6-7 and a 31 or more?

Anyone else have ideas?

Your numbers are good - 3.6-7 and 31 will usually get you looked at. A lot of Texas schools are also big on ECs. They are also quite a bit more competitive than a few years ago.

Nice. Are the Tx waitlists you're on one big pool, or are the oos separate?

Now if we can just get Roxie to add our lineup pic to her sig🙄. Curious, what are they going to clean up/help with? Not sure what I'm doing over spring break, but if they need anything let me know chica.

As far as % of oos apps interviewed, the TMDSAS schools range from about 10-17% or so. I agree with the numbers posted above.

If you've been accepted to UT houston, I wouldn't worry about the other schools...😉

I was in the same position you were with the oos expenses being cheaper than instate.

So are you making it to welcome weekend?

I don't know how the OOS waitlist works... I would think it's separated into OOS, but I'm not sure. Anyone know? I'm not sure which one would be better for my chances! 😉

To dd128, I'm very excited about the Texas schools, to say the least. I'm glad I've got one place, and would be even more ecstatic to be able to make a choice! As for the welcome weekend, on the other hand, I would love to go but it's not looking good with the schedule. Hoping to make it work, but I don't know how it will turn out.

Here's a question: I'm stoked about the tuition at UT-Houston, but is there a possibility to get IS for first year? I know at UTSW they said it would be IS tuition all four years... I just didn't know if Houston did the same thing. That would sure be nice!! 😀

Hah, I thought they would have told you. I'm under the impression that most or all of them don't technically separate oos into a diff pool. Don't really know if it matters much either way though.

If you get a $1000 scholarship at a Tx school, you get instate tuition. dd, unfortunatetly, did not receive one, so it's not a given.

Wanted to parrot what a 2nd year friend of mine posted in the Tx thread for ooser's applying to UTMB. You now have the option of doing your 3rd year at St Lukes in Houston, in addition to the traditional options of doing it in Austin or Galveston. It's voluntary, and you will probably also have the opportunity to do individual rotations away from your home site if there's room.

Happy spring break all! I'm aware my posts have been lacking...I blame last block of exams 👎 which have probably made me feel the most inadequate I've felt since starting med school 🙁 Hope everyone is hanging in there...believe it or not we're now exceptionally close to 2nd year!!!

Are you guys definitive on your summer plans yet? I've ended up finding a professor in the pediatric surgery dept that I'll be working with. Still not super sure on what we're doing, haha.

Ahhh lucky. I still have 2 more days of class and a final on Friday! Hope you're enjoying yourself though! 2nd year seems so foreign... can't believe 1st is going so quickly!

I'm doing genetics research this summer w/ my current professor who is pretty much the most awesome doc around. When we aren't in the lab, he is the chief of the clinical genetics dept. so he said he'd take me around with him. Other than that, I met a woman last week who is in adolescent med and works a lot w/ eating disorders, so I'm going to try and catch up w/ her a bit. We're supposed to find out this week if we get funding from the school... hope I do, $3,000 would be awesome.

So at preceptor today, my doc and I were talking about how so many more students are specializing these days because of money/schedules. He was saying the payment system is so screwed up because you pay so much more for procedures. The example he used was he could spend a half hour trying to deal w/ someone's abdominal pain and make 50 bucks or clean the wax out of someone's ears for 5 minutes and make 200. That's insane!

Our spring break is next week as well - we had a test on male/female repro today, and the shelf exam for phys/histo on Friday. Unfortunately, I have pneumonia this week, and feeling like crap would be an improvement. Needless to say, I did not take the test today, and may or may not take the test on Friday. At any rate, I'm working on about 2 brain cells, so I haven't studied.

I'm set to do the week Imed preceptorship right when we are done with class in May, so I will be done with that when my kids get out of school. Beyond that, I'm going to play!

Woooo spring break!! 😎

I wish. Technically, it is, but I've had pneumonia all week and missed two tests - including and NBME final. Now I have to take them Wednesday and Thursday. Needless to say, I've just started studying for them.

The good news is that I am feeling MUCH better (no stamina whatsoever, though), and I didn't miss any new material - just test, dead days, final, and Spring Break. 🙁

if it makes you feel any better, i think i have gall bladder sludge. 🙂

I had that a few years back. We had a field trip to the GI lab a few weeks ago and I volunteered to hop up on the table for an abdominal ultrasound. No stones, nothing that warrants removal. Every once in a while I can feel a twinge around the gall bladder. Ah, joys!😀

I'm going to see a GI doc about it in a week or so.

I get serious RUQ an hour and half after eating once or twice a week. It's debilitating when it happens, so I hope there's something that they can do.

I've already had a normal ultrasound and functional scan.

Solidarity...I was just PM'ing someone a few days ago about a bad case of bronchitis I had several years ago. My doc put me on Biaxin for a little over a week. My skin turned yellow, and I couldn't make myself eat, even though I was starving. Case in pont, I heated up a poptart, took one bite, and proceeded to mouth and chew it for 45 min before being able to swallow it. I just sat there and stared at the rest of it:laugh:. :luck: on the tests.

I had a really bad case of bronchitis three years ago - got the joy of Biaxin as my second round of antibiotics. The whole thing started the night before the MCAT, lasted 3 1/2 weeks (unless you count the asthma I've had since then). Truthfully, I'd rather have pneumonia. Oddly, my asthma hasn't bothered me since I got sick this time.🙄 I'm hoping it has gone away (yeah, right!)

Does anyone need any spare goblet cells?

I have a question about Texas residency. I'm out of state. I'm thinking of finishing college and applying for medical school in Texas the summer after my Senior year.

I will apply and then move to Texas.

1. Will I get instate residency in terms of my app? If not will I be considered an out of state applicant or will I get some priviliges if I move there?

2. If I get in will I get in-state tuition the first year since I will enter medical school after living there for one year?

Thanks for your help.

Back to school, back to school...

Hope you're feeling better, cpa!

You would have to be a resident before you apply. So if you moved and then applied, I believe that would count. If you apply and are accepted as in-state, then you will receive in-state tuition.

Back in class, all caught up (had to take my exams during spring break!), and feeling better...not 100% yet, but getting closer!

I would do it. As previous posters mention, it is dirt cheap relative to AMCAS. Plus, based upon my experience and those of other out of state applicants, they do take OOS and I believe that at least UT Southwestern really considers OOS applicants with ties to the state.

Forgive my stupidity, but what's the appeal of Texas schools for out of staters? Just good schools, or something else?

For me, I think its probably combination of factors:

1. School Rep
2. Cost: For me, since it is so competitive to get into the UCs, I knew I would most likely end up at a private school or non-CA state school. Thus compared to those schools, the UTs are considerably cheaper. If you factor in cost of living, the UTs become an even cheaper option. Also, UT Southwestern gives OOS tuition waivers to all OOS applicants they accept, which along with addnt scholarship $$ they gave me, results in my total cost for attending UTSW being 1/3-1/2 the cost of attending a UC.
3. Location: I would prefer to stay in CA, but if I cant, TX is not a bad option.
