Hey guys,

Does anyone know of any out of Universities that are particularly friendly to out of state applicants (D.O. or M.D.)? Assuming that I don't get into University of Colorado I really like University of Texas San Antonio and PCOM. Any knowledge of these?

Thanks!

I wonder though if being OOS does matter to some private universities. For instance, I am an Arizona resident, and I heard back from both Arizona D.O. schools (which are private schools) about an interview within a few weeks of my file being complete. The only out-of-state program who I heard back about an interview within a few weeks of my file being complete was DMU. All other OOS private schools like Western, PCOM, CCOM, etc I have still yet to hear from, even though my files were complete back in November.

I wonder if private schools still give some preference with reviewing applications first of their in-state students... as I would imagine that in-state students are more likely to attend the school, private or not. That's just my idea though, whether or not it is accurate.

The TPR book has a little bit of insight on the matter.

Most private DO schools don't favor in-state applicants. They might have a few more from their state, due to simple geography, but if you haven't heard back from the programs you mentioned, I'd question your application materials before I questioned your residency status. I don't mean to sound harsh, so please don't take it that way.

Just a heads up on San Antonio, and all other Texas schools ( besides Baylor, which is private), they are required by law to take at least 90% texas residents. That makes it really competetive to get into any Texas school if you are not a resident. I'm not saying it is impossible, just that you'll need something that makes you really stand out if you want a good shot, and you need good stats as well.

A few of the private DO schools that I applied to do say that they show preference to their region (e.g. VCOM shows preference to applicants from southern Appalachia). So that's another thing to consider.

True. This info is generally publicized via the school's website and/or the CIB.

PCOM is very friendly to OOS students. I applied to nine schools, all of which were OOS except CCOM and the only school I didn't get an interview at was DMU. The other schools were: CCOM, AZCOM, Touro-NV, WVSOM, PCOM, Nova, LECOM-B, PCOM. I ultimately settled with PCOM. I would say that a large majority of students here are from Pennsylvania, but the school doesn't have an overly strong bias towards residents.

Interesting. As an OOS'er who sent my aacomas the very first day I could, I did NOT get an interview at PCOM. I did however get an interview at DMU, MSUCOM, UNE, and several allo schools. And I was OOS for all of them.

So as with almost every school, who knows what they're really looking for. I would worry more about applying to a school you want to go to and stop worrying about IS/OOS preferences so much.
