Hello all! I’m hoping for a little input on my dilemma! I’ve so far been accepted to both OVC and Tufts. Unfortunately these are both pretty expensive. Tufts is about 58k/yr and with the current exchange rate OVC is about 52k/yr, so not a huge difference, and of course the OVC tuition is dependent on the exchange rate. I am married and my husband won’t be moving with me for at least the first year, possibly two because of work. OVC is only about 2 hours from where he’ll be, while Tufts is about 6.5 hours. I didn’t feel like I got a lot of information about OVC while I was there, so it seems like Tufts has more and potentially better opportunities, but it’s really hard to tell. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!!

tufts vet has a beautiful campus. if you want to practice in US pick tufts, if you like Canada pick OVC, that's all I can tell you

that‘s 6.5 hrs away from her husband

At OVC, they may actually be able to make the distance thing work. And we are heading into very uncertain economic times, so if her husband has a (hopefully) secure job where he currently is, it may be best for them if he plans to stay there for the near future.

Congratulations!

I was in your situation last year. I am from the states and im currently at OVC. I also plan on returning home when I graduate as well! Please don’t let anyone tell you that coming to Canada will halt your professional career, any accredited school is fine and you’ll be doubled over in books any place you go.

I love OVC and the academic community here is unmatched. People actually want to help you here and no one fits the “cranky old prof who only cares about research” stereotype here. In my first year I feel like I’ve gotten a pretty good balance of classroom learning as well as hands on learning. Research is extremely student friendly, if that’s something you’re interested in. In terms of fourth year fun, the case load is pretty diverse.

I was extremely stressed last year when I decided to make the big leap to come here, but I’m so glad I did. The profs here are rooting for you and nobody wants to see you fail. I will say moving to a different country (originally from tx) has really changed my perspective on many things in my life, especially in vet med.

Guelph is a nice little town to live in. Relatively cheap, easy commutes (using your personal car or public transport), and it has everything you need for all your vet student needs.

When both programs are great and when tuition is similar, it’s really up to how you feel. You’ll get a good education anywhere you go.

if you have any questions about OVC, feel free to pm me!

Also, OVC’s website/interview day process is just,,,,,,, out of date. There should be more information available online, but there are tons of opportunities here (research, externships, volunteering, and academics).

Thank you for taking the time to offer your experience! I've just recently accepted my seat at OVC! I went back for another visit, and I realized they may not be set up to "sell the school" like schools in the states are because Canadian students can only apply to the school in their province, so for the majority of the class they don't have any other options to compare unless they go international.

I'm very surprised to hear that people may have told you going to school in Canada will "halt your professional career." Any reasons why people have said that? I feel like OVC flies under the radar a bit, but maybe because I live so close, many of the vets I work with know the institution well (one of our vets went there too) and have nothing but great things to say about it and its graduates. It's a VERY well respected school here as well as in the international community.

I'm glad to hear you say that about the academic community as well. I think that's what pushed my decision over the edge. Everyone I've talked to raves about how excellent and supportive the professors are and that they truly want everyone to succeed and to come out being great doctors. Can I PM you with a couple questions?

yeah go ahead and pm!

i think the whole "halting of your professional" career came from not going to my instate vet school, which is where I also did my undergrad at. A lot of the older vets I worked for were very discouraging of me going, really just out of ignorance. I do not feel at all that I am at a disadvantage when it comes to being a good trained vets as well as for competing for internships/residencies.

Congrats on your acceptance, you will love it here!
