Oxidation #'s we have to memorize?

i remb there were alot of oxidation #s on the last pcat i took. which ones are the important ones other than you know the usual ones like O,Cl,Na,K,F etc..


and if somone is feeling really nice, can you write what the product of each will be. For ex;

Alcohol + Alcohol = Carb Acid
Carb Acid + Alcohol = ester
what else

I'm not sure what you mean. From gen chem you have to know oxidation numbers of individual atoms in order to tell if something is an oxidizing agent or reducing agent in a redox reaction.

Are you asking what functional groups are the most oxidized?

what i meant was there are ones that you really need to know. like O has an oxidation # of -2 , Na has an oxidation # of +1. Do we need to know say what the oxidation of Aluminum is?

Sure, I think that you need to know that Aluminum ALWAYS has an oxidation number of +3 in all of its compounds. Alkali metals (IA) always have +1. Monotomic ions have the oxidation number of their charge. Hydrogen +1 with one exception. F (fluorine) has a charge of -1. Halogens will, most of the time, follow suit.

You should know how to calculate the ox numbers of polyatomic ions. And free atoms ox # are always zero. That's the gist of oxidation numbers. I've never seen a question test on the special rules of oxidation numbers.
