Hi all,

I am a P-2 student and looking to get an internship! I am thinking of setting up a resume for my search, but i am kind of confused!! I dont have any internships or experience to back my claim. I would appreciate your inputs on what points do i need to focus to build a good resume, considering i dont have any pharmacy store experience. All insights and ideas are very welcome.

Thanks

how about your classmates. ask around and they can tell you if any stores are looking for an intern. for example, my store needs another intern so I just keep my eye out for one of the P1's or P2s that want a job and then tell them to call the manager.

Otherwise, you can go online to the company's website if it's corporate retail and apply online and hope they call you back. Your resume will probably focus on you schooling, volunteering, etc since you haven't had a job.

Call every hospital in your area and ask for inpatient pharmacy.
Then ask to speak to the pharmacy manager or director or whoever is in charge of hiring.

Then tell him/her that you're a pharmacy student looking to work as an intern/tech.

Wow, you don't have any advisors or anything to help you? That sucks.

For your resume, post relevant coursework in addition to past work experience. Since you're a P2, you should have pcol/medchem, pharmaceutics, maybe theraputics or otcs, and etc. If you're in any pharm orgs like APhA, or involved with your pharmacy class, you can add that as well. PS: Get registered as an intern too. Places don't like it when you've been employed there for a year and then realize you arent even officially licensed as an intern.

And if you're in a town with a pharmacy school, the hospitals/pharmacies shouldn't really be surprised at the whole "intern calling about a job" schtick. Follow ZPackSux's advice, but don't be surprised if hospitals reject you, they usually want experience, compared to retail. And try for a non-profit hospital...for profit hospitals have things like "budgets" and stuff, which may prevent them from wanting to hire you. No, I'm not bitter at all...

You want specific resume items? I'd say....like psychoandy said, list your coursework. Don't go into lots of detail - we've all taken the classes, but at least we know where you are academically.

Then list whatever employment experience you have at anything....I want to see if you have taken a job & held it.

Then list your volunteer activities, but only if you have done something over time. I don't want to see that you sent out mailers for the March of Dimes. But...if I see that you have worked a food bank for 2 years or with the Red Cross for a length of time, that shows the determination to take & keep a job.

Remember - it is expensive to hire an employee. If you don't stay...the time it takes to train you & get you up to speed is fruitless for us. We know a new pharmacy employee, unless experienced, is a labor of ...well...not love....but an investment in the future. You won't be very productive for us for quite a while...so we want to see you won't cut & run when we get busy & you get bored.
