Waitlisted at P&S....what is the next course of action? Is it acceptable to find out our relative positions on the waitlist?

I live in Berkeley and I received my waitlist notification today. Postmarked Feb. 25.

waitlist, like I expected.

If I can find some good reasons for Columbia to be my current #1 (right now I'm not sure), I think I can get myself in off the wait-list. I'll find out in a few months then.

Got my smaller envelope today postmarked 2/25.... Waitlisted....

Congrats to all who have gotten acceptances though, P & S is a great school.

ahh, that sucks, Carrie. Hope you get better news from other schools. I still haven't heard anything 😕 Were rejections postmarked Tuesday as well? I'm from a small town in Ohio. I guess I'll give it one more day before i give up all hope. 🙁 But congrats to all that have gotten in!

Good gosh, what is Columbia's deal? I know from reading this board that Pikayou, Loomis, bigbaubdi, acab et al are some of the strongest applicants out there. I mean, Loomis, didn't you get into UCSF out of state? That is an incredible feat.

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted!

Anyone in the Chicago area get a waitlist/rejection yet?

Congratualations to everyone who was accepted. To those who were placed on the waitlist don't throw in the towel just yet. Many of the students in each class come from off of the waitlist. My best advice is to express your sincere interest i.e. write a letter to Dean Frantz and even ask for a second interview if you haven't met him.

For those interested, there is a second look weekend. It is april 15th and 16th, Thursday and Friday. Its a really good time and its informative as well. I highly recommend that everyone who is interested attends.

Congrats again

Really? That's the same weekend as Northwestern's I think. D'oh!!!

Just wanted to say congrats to those who were accepted and to lend some words of encouragement to those who were waitlisted. It's not the end of the world. A bunch of people in our class were taken off the waitlist. If P&S is truly your first choice let them know. Again congrats and I'll see y'all at revist weekend!

I'm in DC, no letter in today's mail.

Argh! D.C.'s mail is so messed up - Nothing for me today either!

Anyone else in D.C. get any news?

 Congrats to everyone who has gotten the good news already!!!

Anyone know when P & S actually starts? Orientation, etc..

If I wasn't heading home for the weekend, I'd propose a DC-waiting-for-the-damn-letter-from-Columbia happy hour. Perhaps we can turn it into a we-waited-so-damn-long-for-our-waitlists happy hour next week.

Just trying to figure out where I stand...
How many get the "very highly ranked alternate" letter? It asked me to "accept" the "offer" of being an alternate. What are my chances at this point? Is accepting alternate status akin to sending an LOI? Or can I still consider the schools I still haven't heard from? Blergh, I was so anxious to get this letter, and I feel like it cleared up nothing. sigh.

I did not received anything in the Chicago area (Evanston, specifically) today either. What a bummer - I'm guessing there's pretty much no chance I'm getting an acceptance since it's Friday already. Good luck to whoever still has yet to hear from Columbia.

I'm in the same boat medstylee. I'm in the city though.

I did call P&S today and they said some acceptances were mailed out on Wednesday. There may still be hope...

Good luck to you! And please post if you hear anything.

No mail for me! 😕

I am confused about Loomis, bigbaud and Rendar who are all great applicants (and great personalities as well). Oh well ...

I guess i have a rejection/waitlist coming my way.

yup i got waitlisted too...got my letter today (in NJ). does anyone know about how many P&S admits off the waitlist each year? one student told me about half the class comes in off the waitlist, but that seems unrealistic to me.

Congrats to all those who got accepted!

No mail here at Los Angeles either...I guess P&S is really looking for actors, musicians, and olympic gold winner huh? 🙁

excellent idea! 😀 have a good weekend (if you possibly can) anyway!

and much luck to all of us who are still waiting - maybe some of us will be among those lucky few whose wednesday-mailed acceptances just haven't reached their destination yet.

Hey Guys

I know that alot of ppl get in off the waitlist (as said before), so if you're on it, search for old threads and see what others have done in the past. I've read things from calls to Frantz, letters, and requesting a 2nd interview. Also, if P & S is #1 for you, you can also request to come to 2nd look - at least in the past they allowed that.

Hey for those of you who received decision, was the letter sent to the "Legal Permanent Address" on your app or the "Preferred Mailing Address" on your app?

The reason I ask is that my Legal Permanent Address is out-of-country, so I doubt the letter was sent there, but it has been a few days and letters (even regular mail) don't usually take too long to get from NY to LA...Oh well, I think I'm just trying to make myself feel better 🙁

I agree - fabulous idea! Seriously all my mail gets here at least one day later than everyone else on SDN it seems. DC mail has just never been the same since anthrax problems a few yrs ago.

Anyways, I'm losing hope for good news from Columbia - but I guess you never know. Good luck to everyone! Try not to go too crazy this weekend! Hopefully something good will come in Saturdays mail. 🙂

Hey all,

P&S sent me an acceptance letter. I got it yesterday (NY to TX = 2 days, I guess).

Good luck to everyone still waiting for letters and congrats to everyone who's gotten in!

About the waitlist, I also have heard that persistence and a demonstrated interest in the form of letters/calls do increase that chance of getting off of the waitlist.

I like that thought 😉 Let's just keep hoping. The mail here in Evanston seems to be real slow too. It always takes at least 4 days regular mail for anything to get here from my parents in NY - in fact, I just got something today that my dad had sent out early morning on Monday from NYC.

Seems like Pikayou is the only one who has got a letter so far, and it's not by priority mail.

Two things:

1) I called the office today and they told me specifically that all acceptances were sent tuesday. This conflicts w/what one of the above posters typed, and it seems to me that holding out hope for a wednessday-mailed acceptance is futile at this point for those of us who still havent heard anything.

2) About the waitlist: I know of at least two different letters that go out. It seems that one is more generic, and the other says that "you are on the high priority" part of the waitlist. How many of you got the first and how many the second.

Thanks

My waitlist letter said High Priority, or some such.

my waitlist letter says "we find your application falls into the category of being very highly ranked..." Is that the good one or the bad one?? It says nothing of a high priority part of the waitlist...

Not sure. My guess is that anything that does not say "highest priority" is the bad one. Does it ask you to call the office?

i got the "catergory of being very highly ranked"

but no phone info. i think the phone call part is a load.

My said "'Very highly ranked catagory" stuff. From S F Bay Area today.

Why does Columbia interview so many people and get all of their hopes up and then flood them with this "highly ranked waitlist" mumbo jumbo? I'm glad I didn't get an interview, there's no way I would have made it but I feel sorry for the people who did get one and fell in love with the school, etc.

I agree they interview way too many people just like Wash U.

Why did Columbia have to send my rejection letter on my birthday? I knew it anyway because I didn't interview there. 🙁

awww, i'm sorry.

crap waitlisted. postmarked 2/25.

i'm curious to see if there really are different letters going out. is this what you guys all got?

Dear XXX:

Now that the evaluation of applicants for our next entering class has been essentially completed, we find that your application falls in the category of being very highly ranked but that we are unable at this time to offer you a place in the next class.

From experience, we anticipate that in the coming weeks and months some places in that class will become available for any one of a number of reasons. To fill these places as they become vacant, we consult a "list of alternates," made up of highly ranked applicants who have accepted the status of an alternate in regard to our next class.

The rank assigned your application by our Committee clearly entitles you ot this status and so we are offering it to you now. By the date indicated below, will you please let us know whether you accept this offer? A form for your reply has been enclosed.

March 16, 2004

As we are both interested in seeing that any vacancies in the class that may develop are filled as promptly as possible, please be assured that we will let you know as quickly as we can if we have a place in the class for you.
sincerely,

Andrew G. Frantz

got the same "highly ranked" letter

I "heard" that Columbia puts about 150 on the wait list and accepts about 10 from that.

interesting - i thought that they put most of the non-accepted interviewees on the waitlist and rejected very few(??) also, i saw somewhere on one of these threads that a current student cautioned that we not read into the wording of the waitlist letters. according to him/her, there are something like 3 or 4 different permutations of the letter and, although they are worded differently, they are all basically equivalent. i've also heard that the school takes up to 60 people off the waitlist each year. this is what my tour guide told me. this all might very well be inaccurate hearsay, but it seems logical at least. i'm sure most columbia acceptees are also accepted to other top schools and a number of them are bound to choose those others over p&s. it's pretty evident from these threads even - half of the posters are less than thrilled with columbia while the other half drool over the school. i guess maybe this is just another mode of wishful thinking for me, but it helps to think this way at least.

guess it's a crapshoot with all these schools......i am definintely not complaining though. 🙂 i was really lucky to get into ucsf although right now i am leaning towards being a cardinal and heading to stanford! best of luck to everyone! to add more stuff to the rumor mill, i do remember my columbia tour guide mentioning something like 20-25% of their class get in off the waitlist.

I guess Dean Frantz's letter means absolutely nothing at all:

"Although it is too soon to know definitely how things will go this year, I can assure you that we will keep you very strongly in mind. I think you would enjoy being a student at P & S, and from a purely personal point of view I may say that it would give me real pleasure to have you with us."

I agree with loomis, it truly is a crapshoot!

Congrats to all who have gotten in though, P & S is a great school!

I am just wondering why i haven't received anything. How big is the envelope for an acceptance? Our mailboxes are rather small and some of the bigger ones the mail service gives them to the office. I did get a notice about something waiting for me at the leasing office but i recently ordered stuff from bluefly.

Oh well. Either way congrats to the people who got accepted. Not my first choice so it won't hurt as much for me. My heart goes out to the people who had it as a #1 choice and to the person who received a rejection on his birthday.

My waitlist letter was waiting for me at home (I guess they sent to the permanent home addresses).

I agree with you guys, this is a total crapshoot. My only thought is, damn, if this is what happens when everything goes right, I don't know what's going to happen.

Some factoids to help out those still waiting:

-post-marked 2/25
-sent to my permanent home address = my parents opened it before I saw it
-regular size envelope
-same exact wording as raincrew

PS - There's no way your reply to this letter is a LOI. But everything I've heard says they take people off the waitlist who they like and who really show their commitment to going there.

It's in one of those big manila (except white in color) envelopes that can hold 8.5 X 11 paper without folding them. and the entire envelope comes in that crinkly white Priority Mail package.
