Hey everyone, I just got my financial aid stuff from UOP today. It says we have to have the FAFSA filled out by March 2nd. Is it better to apply sooner rather than later? I'm still waiting on W2s and 1099s so it might be kinda hard to estimate right now.

Hey sherm~ I don't remember them saying anything about timing of the FAFSA at the interview, but I have heard from friends interviewing at other schools that most of them said that the earlier the better...but also try to make as accurate estimations as possible becuase it can be a pain to make changes later. Hope that helps!

You're correct. If we had gotten housing we were planning on either (drastically) moving our wedding date up or getting a marriage license in court and doing the formal thing w/ guests and party favors as planned.

You'll be happy to know that w/in the first few weeks UOP schedules "Significant Other" night--they actually mentioned this in my interview but in case they didn't talk about it during yours, they discuss the trials of school on a relationship and give tips on how to make it work.

Sorry Kelly, but I'm not sure I understand...do you have to be married to live in student housing with your significant other?

Does that package include the UOP housing application?

Hello fellow 2008ers,

My name is Kelly and I worked in advertising in SF while my then fiance, now wife went through UOP ('03). We didn't get student housing (damn lottery!) but spent many nights there. Honestly, they are probably the best VALUE in Pac Heights and arguably the city; for the cost they can't be beat. While they aren't the nicest living option they are far better than many others. Probably the 2nd best and #1 worst thing about them is that you're always around classmates--while you'll be in the "loupe" (terribly cheesy pun) for exams/assignments, you'll also be around all the interpersonal dramas. Picture dorms for mostly-more-mature-than-undergraduate-freshmen. As for me, I plan to take over a graduating Ortho student's place above Starbucks on Fillmore, which barely beats the student housing location (UOP's parking lot runs to the back of the apt.). Of course, you'll all be invited over.

FYI, we used to live in the Richmond district where rent is more affordable ($1,500 in 2000, renegotiated to $1,300 in 2002 & probably around $1,000 now), apartment buildings are quaint and neighborhoods are more parking friendly (ours was in a 4 unit building, w/newly redone wood floors + parking, though there was plenty of street parking available but who wants to move every T/R for street cleaning?). The downside is a longer commute (20 min bus ride) and the inability to run home at lunch to retrieve the assignment you forgot. However, we were still in the city and easily able to party on weekends.

Sorry for the long winded intro. I know housing can be a huge pain--in 2000 at the .com peak SF vacancy was <1% and open houses consisted of people early, w/credit reports, letters of rec. and cashier's checks ready for deposit--seriously. Fortunately our class has a better market to manage.

Thanks for the great info. I'm crossing my fingers for the student housing. I visited my friends place and it seemed pretty fun.

It's called Cioppino (pronounced: chuh-PEE-noh) and it's a quintessential San Francisco dish. A lot of people have it for Christmas Eve Dinner (winter is crab season), I think it's awesome! But, I think that the Ciopinno Dinner is with the Alumni when they welcome us to the school, if I remember correctly.
Can you tell that I'm a little obsessed with food? San Francisco is the perfect city for me!

Are there any good lobster places? I love lobster. yummm

From my experience, the earlier you apply the better. The FAFSA process can be a real long experience and they don't always have the funds in place on time if you apply late. But, I think as long as you apply by March 2, you should be fine. I wish employers would send the W-2 info a little earlier than they do. I know my employer likes to wait until the last possible day.

Yes, that would be nice if they sent them sooner, I'm waiting for several and still have none. When is the last possible day they can send them?

My eventual goal is to get my pilot's license and hop over to a condo somewhere on the weekends--I'm jealous to see you've already got the fllying part down! Isn't there some national flying dentist club?

I don't know if there's a club like that, but if not, there should be. Flying to a condo on the weekends would be great. It really isn't hard to get a private pilot license; it usually costs about $4000-7000 depending on how long it takes you and where you go. Other ratings take longer.... I hope to buy a plane (or two, HA) someday, but they're pretty expensive, especially nicer, faster ones. I think I'll pay for dental school first.

It's all good, I should have been clearer. You have to either be single (or married but willing to live without your spouse, which is kind of ironic but these situations happen--like me during our 1st year for example) or married, in which case you'll be going for one of 4 (?) or so units reserved for married students and their spouse. There are no rooms for those w/ boy/girlfriends, friends w/benefits, those w/promise rings or even engagement rings. Also, if you have kids at all, you cannot get student housing. I wish I knew the details about presidio housing, which some people love. It's got a little tricky commute and pretty isolated w/out a car (read: you better get groceries when your roomie goes or be willing to haul Trader Joe bags on a bus). I think it's worth a visit for consideration if you get the chance. Hope that helps clear things up.

As for the slow W-2s I'm in the same boat and must say "c'mon former employer! Don't you know I'm trying to get loans here?!" Does anyone know how much leeway there is for having parents use estimates for 2004 instead of what will actually be reported? Or more importantly what possible consequences there could be? If it means the application is on hold and there's no more funds avail. for the HPSL loan by the time the #s get corrected, I'd rather just wait and meet the March 2nd deadline.

Thanks Kelly for clearing that up!

I received financial packet yesterday 😛

Partly to revive the thread, partly because I'm interested:

Do you guys know what the dress code at Pacific entails? I'm in the mood for shopping (my Birthday's soon!), and I'm somewhat excited to get out of my undergrad uniform (ie jeans).

Any comments? Do the guys have to wear ties? If so, I think we girls have it much easier - for once!

Business casual. The girls were dress pants or skirts and a nice top usually. The guys wear dress pants and a dress shirt. I dont think many of them wear ties. Have fun shopping. Early happy bday.

I plan on wearing khakis or other business casual pants with a button up shirt (no tie) during the first year, but when I get into the clinic more regularly, I think I may start wearing a tie--looks more professional.

Also, during finals weeks, the students are allowed to come to school dressed in jeans and t-shirts. That'll be nice.

Hey guys,

I'm pretty excited to start as many of you are. I haven't done my FASFA yet. I am unsure how I should fill it out. I have always been dependent under my parents, but was thinking of filing independent so that I can get the maximum amount of gov. loans. Is this possible? or do I have to file how I am on my parents tax forms last year? Hopefully the financial aid packet will help. Regarding housing, I hope I get into the on campus housing. I don't really feel like shopping around in SF. I heard finding a good apt. is pretty hard.

Look forward to meeting all of you in person. Enjoy your sleep while you can.
Do any of you like to go clubbing, to bars or party? I have a few friends that are first years and a few that are going to be in our class. All of them are pretty outgoing and like to study hard and party hard. The first year friends I have go out on fridays, but study their behinds off every other day. Gotta have some fun. Any of you interested in joining us? 😀

Chris

Jessica, do you want to watch the OC together next year. hahahha JK
I still can't get over how much you look like Mischa Barton.

Hey I'm up for the party hard and study hard thing. thats my motto. pacific is pretty rigrous, but its worht it to be done in 3 years. Ill See you guys up there in July. My name is Yahya mansour and I am your new classmate at pacific starting in July. I'm prety excited about starting dental school. it'd be nice to know some people by the time Iget up there. I'm from So Cal. I'm 24 years old. I study hard, and play hard. I like going to bars and clubs and playing soccer, and basketball and surfing. I guess I am a normal college student. Hopefully we can get to know each other in case we pair up at the Pacific apts, or if we need to find another place. See you guys in July.

Hey Yahya,

Glad you found our tread... I'm going to be your classmate next year too, and I'm also down in Socal right now - Santa Barbara to be exact. Where are you living now? I wonder how long it will take us to lose our socal style - as dakine knows, I'm starting to resemable the kids from the OC a little too much!

Sounds like both of you guys are pretty active partiers, I'm not sure if I can keep up you. Oh well, I'm sure I'll try to for at least a few days!

I had a good friend in highschool named Yah, are you Liberian? Just wondering...

Oh and for other news - I just got my W-2 so I'm going to start my FAFSA, but I also recieved another (different) pin number in the mail. I think it's pretty strange and am not quite sure what's going on. Any advice about that?

Later,
Jessica

I am in Riveside, I go to UCR. Not as nice as UCSB. No I'm not Liberian, I am actually an Egyptian-American. I did my FAFSA online with last years taxes, it benefits that way because your income usually goes up each year. That way they think u make less, so u get more finaid. Just try out the new pin, if it doesnt work, then try out the old one. if that doesnt work then just fill out a paer one it will be quicker than waiting for a new pin in the mail. If ur ever out this way let me know, maybe we can meet before school starts. Cya later.

Hey Yahya I always thought Mansour was a Lebanese last name. Richard Mansour (aka Dick Dale) is a famous Lebanese surf guitarist (he came up with the theme song for Pulp Fiction).

I'm not currently in school but I graduated from UC Davis.

The only info on housing I got was this blue sheet that listed vaious apartments complexes. Right now I'm focusing on getting my FAFSA done. I think it might be a little too early to be looking for housing -- is this true?

Who's down for Hawaiian shirt Fridays? I can't remember when this attire is and isn't allowed but I know some classes have done it. Other styish trends to be partaken: sideburn September, mustache May, and OC October (so Jess & other SoCals don't feel left out).

There was a really young (turned 21 during his 2nd year) who felt he needed to wear a tie in order to get some "clinic cred." I think I'll only wear them when required.

I also recall some girls wearing stilettos to school, including clinic. Jess, are you one of those? Next year we'll celebrate your b-day in SF 🙂 ; the dreaded 3rd permitting. 😡

i got a stupid question but are stiletto heels the ones with clear heels?
im game for the casual dress days, not too sure about the hawaiian shirts though. maybe we can dress like retro dentists and make it a 70s dress day.

Haha - stiletto just refers to a high, narrow heel. Here's the pair I plan to wear the first day of classes:
http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/c...cat5010742&masterId=cat000143&index=19&cmCat=

Just Kidding! I'm not the type of girl who wears stilettos - but who knows that could all change, although I doubt I'll have the cash flow to support a shoe fetish. Right now I live in Rainbows - gotta love the socal style!

I'm all for theme dressing - although it looks like I won't be able to participate much - I fortunetly lack the ability to participate in moustache May or sideburn September.

On another note: Does anyone know what the exact date of the first day we need to be at Pacific is? We start at least a couple of days before the second and third years right? I want to start planning my vacation...

Also, anyone been to any good restaurants in Marin lately? I'm going to be up for the weekend, and wanted to go out for a (belated) B-day dinner with my parents. I thinking Insalata's - but their menu never changes - any advice?

Later guys...

Nice shoes. I'm not sure about any restaurants up there, ive only been up there twice. But I do know that classes start on July 8th. We have like a laptop training thing that day. Other than that, I'm just waiting for my financial aid package to get here. have fun on ur bday

i grew up in marin, and one of my all time favorite restaurants is Spinnakers in Sausalito. It's right on the water and pretty upscale, good variety of food too. There are some really good little italian restaurants off of sir francis drake road in kentfield/greenbrae, one of them is called Ricardos, but it's quite a distance from 101 down sir francis drake. What type of food are u looking for? My parents and I went to Outback steakhouse in marin city, always a tasty choice. Talk to u later, Mike

Yep, July 8th, Friday. I haven't eaten much in Marin, Buckeye Roadhouse is ok, I stop there once in a while, mostly because it's right on 101 in Mill Valley. I'm guessing you aren't interested in going as far as Napa or Sonoma counties, but if you ever do, Martini House in St. Helena, and Mirepoix in Windsor are two of the very best, in my opinion.

I always loved Sam's Anchor Cafe in Tiburon. I went for my B-day one year. They gloat their seafood but all food is fair. Dining on the deck is a must:

As for the shoes--nice tassels.

Do any of your guys know if we can wear t-shirts or do they have to be collared shirts? I'm guessing that corduroys, khakis, or slacks are ok and I heard that jeans can be worn during finals time. 🙂

Does anyone have any other info on dress code? Such as tucking in your shirt or if we can wear scrubs in the clinic.

I'm down for Sideburn September. I'll use anything as an excuse not to shave. I can grow some mean chops! I'm a bit curious about Mustache May -- I wouldn't want patients wondering if they were in a clinic or porn star convention. 🙂

hahahha, thats comedy about the pornstar dentist. youre right, theyd think that they had ron jeremy for a dentist. im not sure about the tucked in shirt thing. but youre right about the pants. i didnt see anyone wearing t shirts either, just collared shirts.

I asked about scrubs, and, if I remember right, they said that we had to wear a collared shirt and slacks even in the clinic. So, I'm pretty sure scrubs are out. In fact, when we walked through the clinic, I think everyone was wearing white coats over their regular clothing.

Can anybody verify this?

That is correct. Business casual.

Whats up everyone,

Just wanted to say congrats to everyone on their acceptances. I will be joining all of you guys in July. My name is Sumit. I graduated from the UOP campus in Stockton last May. I have been working and having fun since graduation. Cant wait for school to start in July. Just wanted to introduce myself. Talk to you guys later.

Hey guys, I'll be up visiting San Fransisco and Pacific in a couple of weeks, Feb 18-20. If anyone wants to meet up and hang out or whatever let me know. I'm just going to get a feel for the place, like how far is the grocery store, liquor store, restaurants, shops, stuff like that. I also wanna see if its worth it to take a car up there coz I heard that parking is a bi$natch and really expensive. Anyways, I'll be up there if anyone wants to go. Late.

Pacific School of Dentistry Class of 2008

I will also be attending UOP come July. I already have a brother attending right now that is in his first year. He just informed me that Authur Dugoni has a grandson that will be joining our class. Infact he is the first of Dugoni's grandkids to enter into the dental field.

guess i can forget about being number 1 in the class now... hahaha

He's a really nice guy. He was in my interview group. Said he hated the attention he got from being the dean's grandson. I asked if he had his tuition waived and he doesn't (but I'm sure he gets a decent scholarship).

And, although I'm sure he could be #1 (if that's important), the last time I had a dean's kid in one my programs, he finished dead last in the class and had to drop out. Go figure.

Hey guys I have a really important question... So i told you guys I am planning a trip to South America from march 31 to april 28. I was wandering if there was anything important I would need to do for UOP during that time. Since I will be gone 1 month... I want to make sure I dont miss anything.

Hmm...one thing i can think of is HAVE FUN 🙂!! Take lots of pictures...enjoy the vacation!! On a serious note egpndoc is probably right...take care of your housing. They are supposed to send us the packet in March and I think the lottery for Pacific's housing will be done by April? Maybe you don't even want to live in the housing facilities, whatever it may be just make sure you've got all those things taken care of so you can have a GREAT time without any worry involved! Where exactly in SA are you going? South America should be beautiful, I definately want to see some pictures in July! Have fun DRE...look forward to hearing about your trip later! byeee

I was thinking about the housing too. So i guess I will give UOP a call tomorrow and warn them about my departure. Hopefully it will not affect anything, as I will try to take care of the student housing application before I leave. I will be in Quito, Ecuador from march 31 to April 14. Then I will fly to Lima, Peru on Apil 14 and stay there until the 28th. I wanted to go to other countries such as chile and bolivia but I realized I couldnt afford being gone for more than 1 month considering I am in the middle of getting into dental school. I will take tons of pics 🙂

Is there a vaccination series requiring a certain amount of time inbetween shots? If so, you'd want to get the 1st one before you depart (you lucky dog).

While in SA, get that Kodak moment on film so that you can hang it up at your work station in sim lab and remember the freedom you had prior to school!

hey, anybody know about the sports teams/intramurals for our school? I heard that we have some teams (like basketball) that play against UCSF med/dental students and other UOP dental classes... I dunno about you guys, but I'm gonna need to stay active in any free time that I have in order to survive the next three years.

Hey, I know this may seen a bit out of place for this thread but I need some help getting into the UOP class of 2009. I recently made a career change and applied for 2008 but I applied a bit late (UOP didnt get my app until end of Nov) which as you all know is far too late.

Here are my stats:
Graduated from UC San Diego in 2002 with two degrees: BSc in Management Science, BA in Biological Anthropology.

GPA was only 2.8 overall (2.9 science and BCP)
DAT: 22/20/19 (I did get 30 on QR but I guess thats the section that counts least!)

I worked in finance for a year or so and ran my own business. Have also spent a lot of time travelling around the world.

Do you guys have any suggestions or views on my chances. I will be taking about 25 semester untils of science courses at a JC and I calcuated if I get a 4.0 it will boost my science and BCP gpas to about 3.3.

My overall would be boosted to about 3.0 but of course its hard to boost that because I took so many units with double major.

I am strongly considering taking the DAT again and trying to get about a 24AA just to make sure I'll get in. I know a 22 is a good score so I dont mean to sound like one of those whiny kids who isn't happy with a 22, but I know UOP is HUGE on DAT so wouldn't a 24 pretty much guarantee me a spot if I applied in May?

Let me know what you guys think. I loved UOP and even though there is a chance I'll get into some schools this year, maybe USC or NYU, I'd rather wait a year and go there.

Organized intramurals are limited since we're so far from the main campus. The only organized things I know of are annual golf tournement and basketball tournements. Each class enters a team or two to the bball tourney and the alumni assembles a team as well (I used to play with them). After the tourney, everyone barbeques-it's a lot of fun. Also, people usually play pick-up games at least one night a week in a church down the street from the school. Sadly I fractured my foot 2 weeks ago playing ball at the air force base--those guys are rough, no foul called. 😡

There is a soccor field and tennis courts across the street from housing, but as far as I know there isn't any organized league. There's also a couple of tennis courts and a sad blacktop half-court bball hoop in Alta Plaza (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.ad...e=415-922-1444&spurl=0&searchtype=search&cat=). The tennis courts are OK but the view is even better. If you toured UOP on a clear day, Dr. Yarborough probably pointed it out from the rooftop.

I think there is an informal runners group too. They always liked to head down through the Marina and Crissy Field to the Golden Gate. Personally, I struggle with the act of running for the sake of running--I need to be dribbling or catching a ball or I get bored.

Of course, I think the biggest stress reliever will come from here🙁http://www.fillmoreshop.com/pages/harrys.html) 😀
