I think I know why the UCSF area is cheaper. I went there for the interview and that area SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. So many vacant apartments and no good shops or restaurants like on fillmore. After I left UCSF I just wanted to leave. If they assume thats where you are living I can definitely see why its cheaper.

But see, it's the exact opposite. UCSF budgets $1,701 per month for living expenses while Pacific budgets $1,413 (both for single student off-campus). And we all know that the rent around Pacific is more expensive (and rightly so because it is a much nicer area). I think Pacific is trying to make there cost of living look cheaper so that the overall cost is lower. To me that $300 dollars a month is kind off a big deal, but I guess there is nothing we can do about it.

oh well... anybody have any new news?

I wouldn't say the area around UCSF sucks. The weather may not be as nice as around UOP, but its still a nice area. There are plenty of good shops and restaurants in the area, you just gotta know where to go. The haight and cole valley is right next door, as well as the park. I would say overall, the area surrounding UCSF is safer than where UOP housing is located.

hey jess, ya i got the same letter as dental pilot, it was just a response from having turned in those 4 forms they sent to us a while back (credit policy statement, etc). O hey, anyone else going to the North Beach area in the city for St Patty's day? They close off a couple streets near the irish pubs and i hear it gets crazy.

I wish, that sounds fun. St. Patty's always falls right during finals week - I haven't been able to really celebrate my Irish pride in years.... :luck:

I'm doing some temp work at UOP this week and just picked up my packet from admissions. Included in the packet is estimated cost of education (81k + 73k +76k! ack!), medical vaccination forms, housing applications, and a request for our second deposit. We also get our login for the student site. The only financial aid info included is a loose outline of what they expect school will cost in addition to the stafford loans. One thing I didn't realize is that although UOP is a 3 year program, we're elegible for the stafford loan every 3 quarter period, so we still get 4 years worth of stafford loans.

are they including living costs in those estimated cost of education?

There are 2 budget estimates included in the packet.

The first one is very detailed but only includes tuition and supply costs laid out by year.

1st year - $81k
2nd year - $73k
3rd year - $76k

The second one is more general, but includes estimated living expenses and is laid out for each 3-quarter period instead of by year.

Estimated living expenses (per 3 quarter period)
Off-Campus = $17k
On Campus = $14k
Parents = $6k

Thanks for all of the info Sherm. It looks like they're budgeting a lot more for living this year (at least more than in the info packet we all received at the inteview).

Also, not sure if anyone cares, but our future school is in the NCAA tournament! So if your undergrad isn't being represented (like my athletically-challenged UCSB), you now have a team to back. They're ranked #8 and are playing Pittsburgh (#9) at 12:40 ET on Thurs. Go Tigers!!!!

Im sorry, but I dont get it, so you have to bare with me for a second. Do you mean its going to cost $81k for tuition and supplies + $17k for year 1? or is the $81k including the $17k? please tell me the $81k is the total for year 1.

damn if the 81k does not include living...... thats gonna be 281k for the 3 years. THat is almost as much as USC for the 4 years.

Wow, looks like we have a $20,000 increase over the class of 2007 ($230,000 vs $210,438). That seems like a huge increase, I guess I'll be forced to take out private loans or live at home for three years. That's definitely not happening - bring on the debt!

Sorry its a bit confusing, but it'll make a lot more sense when you see the packet. The $81k is how much they estimate the first 12 months to cost for tuition and supplies only. This does not include living expenses.

The living expense budgeting chart they give in the packet is split into four 9-month blocks because we renew the stafford loans every 9 months, not each year. The living expense allowance for each 9-month period that I posted earlier is added to whatever tuition costs there are. So yeah, UOP's expensive!

I always knew UoP was expensive, but I didnt think I would be paying about $90k for year 1. Oh well, I think theyre such a good school that theyll prepare us to be be skilled enough to pay back these enormous amounts. They teach you a lot of procedures that most other schools do not teach their undergrads), i.e., endo on #16. So when we can do this procedure ourself and not have to refer, thats more money to pay back these loans. SO this shoudl give us hope. Did you check out the website with the password for accepted students yet?

Ahhh, so the key difference is that one number is based on 12 months and the other number is based on 9 months. That makes sense.

damn!!!! so its not gonna be 281k including living (offcampus). It will be 297K including living. wow! that is just as expensive as USC!!!!

I thought you were going to LLU...

Anyways,
You guys need to stop freaking out - the real cost has only gone up ~$6,500 a year, if you spread it evenly. Is that really that big a deal in the scheme of things? Realize that the new budget allows almost $15,000 more for the cost of living (over 3 years). Personally, I'm going to try to stick to the previously alotted $1475 a month instead of the new $1888 - even though I was complaining about it earlier. Remember that we still get out a year earlier too!

Actualy 20,000 dollar debt is a big deal in teh scheme of things. you end up paying back about 40,000 dollars which in 15 years comes out to be an extra 222 dollars a month taht you pay towards the loan. And I am still undecided on where to go to school.

Dreday it depends on how many years you take to pay back the loan so that extra 22 a minth isn't really true. By the way what are you waiting for to make this decision, you've been undecided for months. Time to sack up and choose. 😎

ya that was supposed to say 222 and i cant spell month apparently.

ok. how long do you suppose it takes to pay back a 297,000 dollar debt? its like buying a house. Suppose it takes 10 years to pay back a 297,000 debt, at 8% interest. you end up having to make $3602.61 per month in payments. Let us suppose a best case scenario of a dentist who after taxes brings in 80k a year straight out of dental school. That means the dentist will be making $6600.00 a month (remember this is after taxes). After paying off his loans, the dentist will have $3000.00 dollars to live off of each month. Also this is a best case scenario. If you call a place like Western Dental, where many first year dentists go to practice, their starting rate is $300.00 a day. $300.00 * 20 (days of work a month) * 12 (months a year) comes out to $72,0000. a year, or $6000.00 a month. THis is gonna require some pretty stingy living conditions the first few years after dental school.

8% seems a little on the high side. I asked a few UOP students what their interest rates were on loans and they said the staffords were just below 3% and their private loans ranged from 4-5% The libor rate loans seemed to be a little better.

You should also be able to make more than $300/day if you stay in the bay area. The going rate for a dentist doing hygeine is $450/day here. A couple of my friends that just graduated last year did that for a while through a temp agency until they were able to secure an associateship. They said there was no shortage of work for them, but that it was just too boring to do for a long time.

But yes, $297k is still A LOT of money and will take a while to payoff. Kinda made me second guess my decision not to go to UCSF, but I know I won't be happy there. If you can really see yourself at LLU, I think it would be hard to turn down the financial advantage you would get, especially with the condo.

$450/day may even be a bit low. Some practices will give you a base like $300/day and then 6% of production you do in that day. So the sky is the limit.

Alright! Pacific made it through the first round of the tourney - now they need to upset the (highly overrated -IMHO) #1 seed Washington

Go Pacific!

ya, pacific is a solid team, 26-3 or something... I have them going to the elite 8... maybe its my heart talking and not my eyes (cal berkeley didn't make it this year so i gotta put everything on the pacific upset)

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anybody knows if the price of the mandatory laptop is included in the Doctoral kit? Or is it maybe the Technology fee that's spread out over all of the quarters? I'm sure it's accounted for somewhere... at least I hope.

I believe the laptop cost is rolled up in the kit price, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll try to remember to ask on Monday. We definitely don't have to pay "extra" for it. I also just found out that we'll be getting digital cameras, probably toward the end of the first year. So if you can hold off, I wouldn't run out and get a new camera just yet.

Edit: spoke too soon. I looked into the camera thing more, turns out to be a special camera for clinical applications.

so it seems like most of us plan on not attending Pacific Pride day, anyone actually going?

I am. My wife wants to see the school and it seems like a great time to show her. Plus we get to spend the day in the city. Good stuff.

Does anyone know if we have to collect a certain amount of extracted teeth for the first quarter? Does anyone know when the white coat ceremony is? I know its in July after school starts, but I am not sure which day it is.

I was just noticing in the letter to the doctor from the packet we just got that "The student will be the recipient of a variety of dental procedures during the educational process." Anybody know what we do to each other??

We practice giving injections to each other. We also perform prophys on each other, good luck to us all.

Oh, that's not bad. I was worried when I read "variety" of procedures.

You don't need any teeth until fourth quarter. White coat ceremony is at the beginning of the second year. Kind of the entry into clinic. The laptop is included in the "technology fee" which is included with tuition/kit/etc.

Do you know if its better to live in Presidio or to get a place on my own that is closer to school? How much time is there to actually study at night since you get out at 5 and probably have to stay after anyway to finish up lab projects and stuff like that? Thanks.

There is plenty of time to study, it just depends on your priorities. Yes, first year is VERY busy, but also very doable. As far as housing goes, thats your call. Presidio will probably be cheaper, but it is a little ways from school. Plenty of people live there and get to school no problem.

do you think it's best to live with fellow dental school students or is it cool to live alone during your first couple of years? What is the best bet for doing well and thriving and being close to your classmates?

I may have overlooked this piece of information, but I was curious as to how the lottery for housing proceeds. If you choose to participate in the lottery for Pacific apts and the Presidio, do they only pick your name for one of the complexes, or can you potentially be drawn for both complexes then choose the one that is your first choice? I guess more concisely: if you get drawn for one are you taken out of the drawing for the other?

Maybe I missed this info in the packet we got a week ago, but I din't see anything on when we should apply for alternative loans. Does anybody know if we are going to hear more from Pacific regarding loans in addition to the stafford loans?

Hey suckers, I'm in...i.e. class of 2008. I've been lurking here on and off while I finished off my last couple prerequisites. Does anyone know where my family (two kids (3 and 4 years old) and wife) can live most cheaply in SF? We're in the Presidio lottery, but I've seen some comparable rental units for a bit cheaper elsewhere. I get that Pacific Heights is pretty brutal costwise, but it's a nice neighborhood. Any happy mediums anywhere else in the city? I'll be commuting on my bike most of the time, so it can't be out in Silicon Valley of something (not like that's cheap either).

Have any of you family types gotten in touch with any current students or students about to graduate for info?

How about the laptops? Does Pacific have their texts on the computer, or do we have to cart them around as well. That was one cool thing about UNLV, (might've been the only cool thing...) having the books online.

Fill me in,

Mick

ps- Those are my kids in the avatar, The Captain and Tenille...

I'm sure someone else can answer this better, but I'll throw out my opinion on some family-friendly neighborhoods that are within biking distance (but remember that our school in at the top of a hill!):

Laurel Heights
Presidio Heights
Inner Richmond
Marina
Cole Valley
Inner Sunset
Nob Hill

I'd think that anywhere on the north or west side would be a good bet, as long as you're near a park - somewhere to run around. There are definitely some neighborhoods to avoid: Tenderloin, Downtown, Hunters Point, etc.

I'm not sure how old your kids are but you may want to check out the schools:
SF Public Schools

And then here are some other general links:

SF Neighborhoods

Article: 26 Top Places to live in the Bay

If you want more suburban option, a lot of the students with families live right across the Golden Gate in Marin and carpool in together (~15 min). The schools are better there and there is a lot more space. I'm from San Anselmo, which is mentioned in the article above. But I have a lot friends who grew up in the SF neighborhoods I mentioned above - and they turned out alright, althogh most went to private schools.

Good luck,
Jessica

so javadi i was just looking at your avatar and i don't know if its already been said, but that is one incredibly ugly thing. k that's all.
