Hey friends. I thought I'd start a thread for us to post questions, info, or anything related to Pacific and our class. I know in years past they've all had a thread. It'll be nice to already know a few people when school starts in July. I look forward to meeting everyone in July.

hey, glad you started up the thread. my name's mike and im pretty excited about heading to school in the fall. my aol messenger screenname is mikoli13 if anyone wants to hit me up there. have you done your fafsa yet? and does anyone know about getting a screenname and password for the student area of the UOP website?

Hey Guys,

I was wondering when this thread would start... I was getting anxious! Anyways, I'm Jessica and I don't have much to contribute yet. I haven't done the FAFSA yet, although I just got my pin. I'm still waiting for my parents to send me their estimates, and waiting for my W2.

I'm interested in getting into that student area too, but we probably won't be able to for a while. Does anyone know a good way to get in touch with graduating seniors about possible apartments? I love SF, but not the rentals that I'm seeing on Craigslist. I'm really into cooking and the kitchens all seem to be tiny and/or dirty. Hopefully, with our schedule I will actually be able to cook. But I am looking forward to more of those turkey sandwiches, where the turkey was carved right in front of me (if that wasn't just for show!)

I guess that's all for now, talk to you later,
Jessica

Hey guys,

Party at my place 1st day of school. What a better way to get to know each other, when we are trashed celebrating our induction into the best dental program J/K. If I dont get into that dental student housing Ill probably need to look for somewhere to live. Jess, you don't sound too happy with the places you looked at? are you talking about the housing information sheet they sent us? If so what was wrong with the housing you looked at?

I haven't done my fafsa yet. I should get on it soon though. Also for those of you who got the dean's schollarship, when we do the fafsa are we supposed to include amount of schollarship that we are receiving in it, or not? or should we just not include it and let them figure it out later.

thanks,

dre

Hey everyone!

Congrats on your acceptances. This is my first post here. In fact, I just found out about this site from a friend of mine. I applied in July and got that great call on Dec.1 from Janelle telling me I was accepted. I thought I'd drop a line to my future classmates and colleagues.

I have not filled out my FAFSA, but I will be going to starting on that soon. I have to wait for some tax info before I can proceed.

I have a few questions:
1) DRE - can I be like Snoop and bring the Chandon or like Lil' Jon and bust out the Cristale to your "1st Day of school party?"
2) Have any of you guys received any other info or mailings after the general housing letter, which included a letter from Dr. Yarborough, the blue paper with apartment listings, and the calendar of scheduled events? The reason why I ask is because it's hard to imagine not receiving any info until March (at least that what's the calendar says).
3) Are you guys going on vacation before school starts?

Good luck to all of you and wish you guys the best!

Sure nuff we'll have the crystal and the Don P to celebrate... let's make it huge. haha

I got the housing letter and the letter from Dr. Yarborough with the blue ppaer but I have not gotten any more housing info. I guess well have to wait till mkarch.

I am going on a long vacation. I will actually be done with school in end of March so I will have about 3-4 months of vacationing time. I plan on going to visit peru (machu pichu), bolivia, ecuador (galapagos) and brazil. well see if i can keep with my plans. I hope i wont miss out on any important paper work during that time. I would better call the school and find out.

Jess, you don't sound too happy with the places you looked at? are you talking about the housing information sheet they sent us? If so what was wrong with the housing you looked at?

Yeah, I guess I'm just kind of picky when it comes to apartments. I am not talking about the housing they gave us, because I want to live in a smaller building (a walk-up with 2-3 places in it). The main problem with the housing is that it is so expensive! And I'm used to pretty expensive housing (I'm paying $1250 right now for a 1 bedroom in Santa Barbara). Those of you who are familiar with SF know that Pacific is in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. Anyways, enough of that - I'm not moving for at least another 5 monthes.

As far as mailings - I thought that they said they would send a financial info packet at the end of January. Your question about the Deans Scholarship shoud probably be answered in that (I received it too, so I'm interested).

Alright off to my 8 o'clock class - I'm practicing for next year. 😀

Jessica

Hey everybody, I'm Taylor. I also can't wait to start, I feel like I've been doing pretty much nothing this year. But that will dramatically change in July, of course, so I guess I should enjoy it for now.

Housing seems to be on everyone's mind... does anyone have any opinions on Pacific's housing compared to other housing? I can't decide if it would be better to be where more students are (and cheaper, I think), or if it would be nicer to have something more private. I'm only an hour north of the city, so maybe I'll go check out the Pacific apartments in person sometime soon.

Feel free to email me at [email protected]

Hey guys,

I'm pretty excited to start as many of you are. I haven't done my FASFA yet. I am unsure how I should fill it out. I have always been dependent under my parents, but was thinking of filing independent so that I can get the maximum amount of gov. loans. Is this possible? or do I have to file how I am on my parents tax forms last year? Hopefully the financial aid packet will help. Regarding housing, I hope I get into the on campus housing. I don't really feel like shopping around in SF. I heard finding a good apt. is pretty hard.

Look forward to meeting all of you in person. Enjoy your sleep while you can.
Do any of you like to go clubbing, to bars or party? I have a few friends that are first years and a few that are going to be in our class. All of them are pretty outgoing and like to study hard and party hard. The first year friends I have go out on fridays, but study their behinds off every other day. Gotta have some fun. Any of you interested in joining us? 😀

Chris

Jessica, do you want to watch the OC together next year. hahahha JK
I still can't get over how much you look like Mischa Barton.

Haha. It's good to see you guys posting here. I was hoping the thread wouldn't be a dud.

I agree with Jess--Pacific said they'd be sending a financial aid packet towards the end of this month. So, I'm waiting to fill out my FAFSA until then.

As for partying, the only partying on Friday nights this fool will be doing is with his 3 daughters. I get to watch Mary Poppins, eat popcorn, and build castles. I know you are all envious, so you are all invited anytime!

I like to go out, but I'm notoriously cheap, so I won't be going to any of those "you have to buy a $200 dollar bottle of vodka just so you can sit at our special table" clubs. Unless you're paying of course! j/k. I look forward to having some fun, but I'm sure some weekends will be stay in with a good movie kind of nights.

It's a plan. It's kind of strange watching her, although I get good hairstyle and make-up tips!

I haven't seen the housing, although the pictures made it look kind of crappy. Thin carpets, plastic cabinets, etc. I'm going to try my hand at finding a nice place (hopefully an Edwardian with beautiful molding and a fireplace!). But I have the option of staying at my parents house for a while if I don't find a place right away. They're about 30 min north in San Anselmo. Where are you living Taylor? In Marin or further north?

I have to stay that I'm going to miss the Southern California weather on days like today. It is 75 degrees and beautiful. I'm going out to enjoy it.

Later guys,
Jessica

hi, congrats to all of you!!

do any of you know how many people were accepted to UOP?

Ah thats cute. Kids are great. They are kinda hard to deal with at times but they are great nonetheless. Take your kids to see Finding Neverland; it was a wonderful movie.

Yea, I don't like spending a lot at clubs either. I never saw the point in paying for tables either; the whole point of going to a club is to dance anyways. Movie nights are fun too. I have the blockbuster online thing. It is 15 bucks for 3 movies at a time, as many as you per month. You also get 2 free in store rentals. I have been watchign a lot of movies lately.

Glad to hear you guys all down to do some socializing on the weekend. Imma be hitting up the salsa clubs on a regular basis, specifically Roccapulco and Carribean Gardens. My goal will be to make all of yall professional salsa dancers by the time we graduate. Hope you all are up for the challenge.

Anyone doing any traveling before school starts?

Anyone doing any traveling before school starts?

I'm jealous of your travel plans Dreday. I'm tryng to squeeze in some kind of "amazing, life-changing vacation" before we start in July. But I only have about three weeks and am slightly low on funds, so I'll probably end up just going to Hawaii, or some other relaxing place. Then I can be tan before we plung into the foggy San Francisco summer!

I'm thinking 10-14 days, and under $2000. Anyone have any suggestions for places to go? I was also thinking about S. America, but I haven't looked into it much.

South america is relatively cheap. I believe you can go to galapagos for 1-2 weeks for under 2000 dolllars. The flight to ecuador alone is between 600 and 700 dollars. then a tour of the galapagos islands (you will probably stay overnight in the islands) is like 300-500 dollars. And then the remaining 800-1000 dollars will be more than enough to cover your expenses (its relatively cheap down there). You can probably go to Brazil also for just under 2 grand.

Thanks DREDAY, I'll look into it!

I really want to go to Europe, but am having a hard time getting friends to go. I might end up just going to Hawaii. I have a real good friend who goes to pharm school there. Hopefully I can stay with her to save some money. heh That is kool you know how to salsa btw. My ex gf wanted to learn, but I was never up for it.

Wow that sounds like a pretty good deal. I gotta look into that too.

I finally remembered a question I had about Pacific - What was the computer requirement? I seem to remember it being a Dell Laptop which is included in the tuition - but I'm not very sure. Anyone remember?

JessSB,

I just looked on STA travel website and you can get flights to ecuador for $527.00, that would be great if you want to visit galapagos (islands that stimulated darwinism). Also you can get flights to peru for $503.00. In peru there are many things you can visit like machu pichu which are the famous latin american pyramids.

Yep, it is included in the fee. The 'technology fee'. Then after you graduate you have an option to buy it for a dollar. I think its top of the line Dell Laptop. My friend showed me his and it is pretty nice.

the slim models? or the thick heavy models?

DREDAY said:

I think it was the slim model. Not 100 percent sure though. It didn't look too heavy.

actually i just found a flight to lima peru for 416.00 🙂 so its looking even better.

Yeah, South America's looking like a real possibility - thanks for the tips.

Also, thanks Chris for confirming my question about the Dell. I hope that it's a nice slim one, and I hope we have great on-campus tech support - because I've had a lot of problems with my current Dell. Oh well, I'm going to continue dreaming about my vacation and not studying!

Listen to you guys and your trips! I'm jealous. Make sure to take some pictures. It'll be fun to see where you go.

As for me, we might go to disney land or something fun, but moving to SF could make any vacation not very possible.

I too think that the laptops are the slim models. On my interview, they looked like the nice slim ones.

If you find something like that, then yeah, that would be a lot better than the Pacific housing! I'm not as worried about how nice it is, though the nicer the better, of course, but I am a little tired of sharing apartments... just not sure if it'll be worth the extra cost to me. I'll have to look around.

I'm from Santa Rosa, and I would have considered commuting if it weren't for the TRAFFIC, but I don't want to leave the house at 5am every day, that just won't work. Though, I did meet a recent graduate who commuted from here on the bus! 5 days a week. There's no way I would even try to do that, but he was married already with 2 kids, and didn't want to move. Even doing that, he made it through.

I was also wondering about the computer. The only thing I've heard is that it's a little overpriced, but whatever, this is dental school. But I hope it's not the big heavy one, that would seem stupid to me considering we're all carrying them everywhere. Anybody know?

Taylor

Hey guys,

Looking forward to meeting you all this July. Can't wait to start school.

Does anyone know when this FAFSA stuff is due? I didn't bother filling one out when I was an undergrad because I didn't take out any loans. There was no such thing as an online app then either...damn, I didn't think I was THAT old.

I'm currently living in Noe Valley, so its highly unlikely I'll be looking for housing closer to campus unless I win the lottery or something. Can't tell you much about good places to look for housing, but if you wanna know where to get some good cheap burritos in the mission, hit me up.

I'm thinking about taking a trip to Costa Rica in June. Anyone been there before? Any tips? All my friends that have gone just rent a 4x4 and drive everywhere. I had originally considered going to Italy, but with the strong Euro, tix are like $1200 RT. Costa Rica is only ~$400.

Oh, I checked with UOP about the laptop they make you purchase. Last year, they were given a Dell d600 with a 40gb harddrive (4.7 lbs, 1.2" thick). They allow around $3000 for the computer.

Sherman

I love Costa Rica! I've been there twice, but I wasn't apying either time, so I'm not sure how cheap my suggestions are (if that's what you're going for).

The first time we basically did the "rent a SUV and drive everywhere", although we started with a short three day package at Turtle Bay Lodge in Tortuguero: http://www.turtlebeachlodge.com/ then returned to our base hotel in San Jose: http://www.doncarloshotel.com/. Then we took the SUV and went all over: Arenal, and Tamarindo were esp fun. Some of the places we stayed included: http://www.hotelcapitansuizo.com/ and http://www.vistadelvalle.com/. But I have to say that some of the little cheap places we stayed were the best.

On my second trip, the whole thing was planned as a fundraiser for my community's Humane Society. Here's are link to what we did: http://www.crocodilebay.com/marin_humane.html . It was an amazing trip and very active: rappeling a waterfall, hiking, ATVs, surfing, kayaking, etc. And the rafting trip was the best, it was on the Pacuare, I'm not sure if it was with this company, but here's an idea: http://centralamerica.com/cr/raft/rioday.htm

If you have any questions, PM me.
Everyone shoud go to Costa Rica!

Sherm, nice work! I'm going to check these out on Dell's website.

I didn't really know how the computer thing worked, so I thought I would post what Griff Turner sent me in response to my inquiry:

"We usually start our computer selection process sometime around the
first of February, with confirmation of the make and model around the
first of April. We then start testing our various Dental School
specific applications as soon as we can get a sample from the selected
vendor. Finally we ship the vendor our finalized specifications in the
later part of May in hopes they can deliver the required number of
machines to us at least ten days prior to the scheduled distribution to
you and your class."

So there it is, he said that he would tell me the actual make and model as soon as they figure it out. I'm sure it's safe to assume that we will have the same set up as '07, but I didn't realize that they are really going to do everything for us. Nice.

Thanks for the info Jess.

Hi everyone! I'll just keep this short and sweet...I'm really excited to start school in July with you guys! As angeeeee says...PACIFIC SPIRIT! 🙂 Dental school is going to be an amazing experience and I know I'm going to be with a bunch of amazing people! I look forward to meeting you all soon!

Looks like we are going to be in a class with some good folks.

I'm also impressed with Pacific's response to your question about the computer. Seems like the are really on top of things. Jess, when you hear, make sure to let us know what type of computer it'll be.

Hey Everyone,

I most likely will be attending UOP with all of you this year. Great facilities, great people (everyone I know there is very happy with the school), and a great city--what's not to like?!

I just spoke with Janelle at UOP and she said we will receive info regarding the laptops and the username/password for the webpage in the packet they will send out sometime March.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you when school starts!

Mark

Hello fellow 2008ers,

My name is Kelly and I worked in advertising in SF while my then fiance, now wife went through UOP ('03). We didn't get student housing (damn lottery!) but spent many nights there. Honestly, they are probably the best VALUE in Pac Heights and arguably the city; for the cost they can't be beat. While they aren't the nicest living option they are far better than many others. Probably the 2nd best and #1 worst thing about them is that you're always around classmates--while you'll be in the "loupe" (terribly cheesy pun) for exams/assignments, you'll also be around all the interpersonal dramas. Picture dorms for mostly-more-mature-than-undergraduate-freshmen. As for me, I plan to take over a graduating Ortho student's place above Starbucks on Fillmore, which barely beats the student housing location (UOP's parking lot runs to the back of the apt.). Of course, you'll all be invited over.

FYI, we used to live in the Richmond district where rent is more affordable ($1,500 in 2000, renegotiated to $1,300 in 2002 & probably around $1,000 now), apartment buildings are quaint and neighborhoods are more parking friendly (ours was in a 4 unit building, w/newly redone wood floors + parking, though there was plenty of street parking available but who wants to move every T/R for street cleaning?). The downside is a longer commute (20 min bus ride) and the inability to run home at lunch to retrieve the assignment you forgot. However, we were still in the city and easily able to party on weekends.

Sorry for the long winded intro. I know housing can be a huge pain--in 2000 at the .com peak SF vacancy was <1% and open houses consisted of people early, w/credit reports, letters of rec. and cashier's checks ready for deposit--seriously. Fortunately our class has a better market to manage.

P.S. the ortho class doesn't finish until the end of our 1st quarter so their soon to be living quarters aren't really an option, however, all departing graduates from class of 2005 will notify housing of their places, which should become available for consideration at summer's beginning at the latest.

Hey Kelly. So I guess I'm misunderstanding the student housing thing: You can live in student housing with a fiance who is not a student? I thought that it would be just like any other student housing where only students can live in it. Personally, I am planning on living with my boyfriend, so I had basically ruled out Pacific's housing. Let me know how it works.

Thanks,
Jessica

You're correct. If we had gotten housing we were planning on either (drastically) moving our wedding date up or getting a marriage license in court and doing the formal thing w/ guests and party favors as planned.

You'll be happy to know that w/in the first few weeks UOP schedules "Significant Other" night--they actually mentioned this in my interview but in case they didn't talk about it during yours, they discuss the trials of school on a relationship and give tips on how to make it work.

Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't want to get my hopes up! Yeah, I did hear about the sig. other night, and I will encourage him to go. I guess your wife will already know all that stuff, lucky guy. I don't really forsee any problems, but I think it's a really nice guesture on the part of Pacific.

Sadly we'll be apart for the 1st year while she fulfills her payback to the USAF. But when I was earning my PhT ("putting her through"--a cool diploma UOP awards for one who helps put the student through UOP) I spent a lot of hours at the office and took up hobbies like guitar, golf, and playstation. I also spent a lot of time at the school, which I suppose is what inspired me to apply. What about the rest of you-why dentistry?

p.s. I know some partners took on the responsibility of apt. complex manager in exchang for discounted or even free rent. Might be another option to explore. I, unfortunately, was never handy enough.

Haha... PhT. That's a good one! Do they really do that?

As for "why dentistry," I left my job as an airline pilot after 4 years to apply to dental school. Although flying airplanes can be fun, there are probably 30 or 40 reasons why I think I will enjoy my career as a dentist more than as a pilot. The short story is that I was looking for something more challenging, more intellectual and scientific, where I could work more closely with people, and feel like I did more today to help someone other than get them from Newark to Omaha. In addition, I'll have more life flexibility as a dental practice owner than as an airline employee. I had seriously considered dentistry at several points in the past, and finally realized I "should have" done it earlier.

Kelly, how did you like working in advertising? Had you considered dentistry before your wife went to UOP?

My eventual goal is to get my pilot's license and hop over to a condo somewhere on the weekends--I'm jealous to see you've already got the fllying part down! Isn't there some national flying dentist club?

There's a motto in my house that goes "Whatever my wife can do I can do better!" JK

I thought about medicine all growing up but when I got to college wanted to do something sexier (for lack of a better adj) & my fraternity parties weren't cutting it. I loved advertising but essentially also came to need something more "important." At times it felt like I was contriving ways to sell arbitrary products. Plus I didn't want to have to move to Chicago or NY. I didn't see how true dentistry's blend of art/science was until I spent enough time at the school. Plus, how sexy is are well articulated teeth? JK again but that PtH thing is true. Funny and true.

They said they serve a fish soup called something that I forgot.

It's called Cioppino (pronounced: chuh-PEE-noh) and it's a quintessential San Francisco dish. A lot of people have it for Christmas Eve Dinner (winter is crab season), I think it's awesome! But, I think that the Ciopinno Dinner is with the Alumni when they welcome us to the school, if I remember correctly.
Can you tell that I'm a little obsessed with food? San Francisco is the perfect city for me!

Hey everyone, I just got my financial aid stuff from UOP today. It says we have to have the FAFSA filled out by March 2nd. Is it better to apply sooner rather than later? I'm still waiting on W2s and 1099s so it might be kinda hard to estimate right now.
