I don't know anything about golf, but I do know that the Presidio Golf course is very close to Pacific. Check out their website:

Presidio Golf Course

Good call Jess_SB. I think Presidio Course is nicer than Lincoln Park (& a little closer to school), but Lincoln Park is quite a bit cheaper. They used to have SF residents rates for <$20/round--anyone know if they still do this?

The course is in the Richmond/Seacliff district by the Legion of Honor--great area for biking and running too. I hate to admit I know this but this is the course Matthew Mcconaughey's character in the "Wedding Planner" was playing. 😱 http://www.lincolnparkgc.com/

hey guys, haven't posted for a while (did my first real traveling and went to paris and south beach miami), so i figured i'd get caught up. I'm very down for a bbq before school starts, i can bring meat/drinks/whatever. I'll also add my name to some of the stuff below... I like basically everything outdoors...

Well, all done with the medical exams except for the Hep B series. It turns out I don't have the antibodies. So, I'm heading down the health department tomorrow. It's $35/shot.

In other news, we secured our apartment in Marin. A nice 2bd/2ba in the Ridgeway Apartments. There are 6 or 7 other dental students there right now. We're paying $1495/month + electricity and phone. The contract is month-to-month and the deposit was only $500. I was afraid I was going to end up finding a place that required first and last month's rent plus a $2000 deposit. Anyway, not too shabby for Marin. It feels good to have the living arrangements out of the way.

I have to take the series too, but they told me that its 3 shots, and the second one is taken a month after the first, and the third is taken 6 months after the second. Is this your case too? So should we just write out the dates on the form, or will Pacific not like this? Thanks

Yes, I have to get 3 shots--the first and second are 1 month apart and the third is six months after the second. I called Kathy Candito and asked if I should just fill in the dates for the second shot since I won't recieve it until after May 12. She said to just have the doctor send a note saying that I had recieved it but to make sure and send the medical forms to Pacific by May 12. She also said that we'd recieve the third shot at school.

I'm glad that this kind of caught on. I hope that we get to actually do some of the stuff.
It looks like most people that like to do one thing like to do most of them, maybe we could set a mid-morning/early afternoon date each weekend and switch events weekly.
Jess, Thanks for the presidio golf suggestion.
I also like to snowboard, but the last time I went I broke my wrist after some jump and it took almost 4 months to heal. I don't know if I want to risk that again, but hanging out in the lounge sounds like a blast!
I added comedy clubs and going to movies.

I'm doing some temp work at UOP this week and just picked up my packet from admissions. Included in the packet is estimated cost of education (81k + 73k +76k! ack!), medical vaccination forms, housing applications, and a request for our second deposit. We also get our login for the student site. The only financial aid info included is a loose outline of what they expect school will cost in addition to the stafford loans. One thing I didn't realize is that although UOP is a 3 year program, we're elegible for the stafford loan every 3 quarter period, so we still get 4 years worth of stafford loans.

Hi Crazy_sherm,

I wanted to ask you what kind of temp work did you do at UOP, and how can I get involved. Did you work in their dental clinic as a volunteer ?

Because of the timing of my 1st shot, I'm scheduled to get my 3rd one over our quarter break at the end of September. 🙄

Packages were sent out yesterday. I just picked mine up this morning, haven't really had time to look through it though. I qualified for around $64k for the first 3 quarters though the budget is estimated at $71k for me. I guess its because I have a bit of savings which will get blown through very soon. Man, there goes my plans for new skis this winter.

Edit: I actually got it fixed and will be awarded the entire budget. I had made a mistake on that green form we sent them a while back regarding parent contributions.

I just spoke to Janell at admissions. She said that people chosen for the appartments (through lottery) would be phoned next week. Does anyone know anything about that? Are first years put together or are they assigned to be roommates with 2nd and 3rds (not that it really matters), I'm just curious and a little anxious to start making some housing plans.

Just about 2.5 more months!

My friend at UOP is living with a 3rd year. I think they mix and match everyone.

Dude, I was just in vegas this weekend too. I think after this weekend I am a candidate for a liver transplant and extra student loans. :barf:

Our class schedule for July thru September is online. Check it out at:

Class of 2008 First Quarter Schedule

The only difference I noticed from what was posted in the detailed version of the 36 month program was that there is no Histology slated for the 1st quarter... I wonder if that's a typo. Without histo, there's a ton of anatomy.

speaking of the liver...

My wife did her residency in Las Vegas (see avatar), so we lived there 7/03-8/04 and I think I'm still detoxing. Fortunately I've inherited an Irish liver :luck:

Has anyone recieved their fin aid packages yet?

Has anyone recieved their fin aid packages yet?

Yup, I received it last week - only a day after Sherm said they were sent out. Although, they sent it to me parents house, so I haven't really looked it over. I was given the full amount.... But I really don't want to take out 32,000 in private loans for the first year.

So I have a question: I have ~$32,000 saved in mutual funds, etc. Would it be smarter to leave that money invested and take out some (hopefully) low interest loans, or should I use that money this first year instead of taking out any private loans? Any thoughts?

Oh, and a bunch of my girlfriends where in Vegas this past weekend too, I guess it was the place to be! I was sadly studying for midterms...

Thanks guys,
Jess

This is why I hate living in the middle of nowhere--still haven't recv'd that packet. 😡

I'm sure you will get a variety of opinions on what to do w/your saved $. I can think of 2 immediate questions you have to ask yourself.

1) What % can you realistically expect your funds to earn over the next 3 years vs. how low of an interest rate can you get on a private loan. Crappy thing about private loans is that they will be collecting interest from day 1 and this will likely result in favor of spending your investment toward school but...

2) Do your post-school plans require a sum of money for a downpayment (house, practice/associateship, etc.)? If so, better keep the money invested and bite the private bullet.

Hope that helps a little. BTW, congrats for having ~$32k already invested.

Jess,

Easiest decision ever--leave the money invested. You've got time and low interest rates on your side. Private loan interest rates are going to be lower than what an average well-diversified stock/bond portfolio is going to make over the next 10 years--especially this year. I'd wait to see what happens with interest rates next year. The Fed is expected to raise rates again which will affect our loan rates on federal and private loans. Next year, those private loan rates will start creeping towards 10%.

I think I'm like you--I hesitate to get into debt if I have the cash in the bank. But, quite honestly, if somone gave me $300,000 right now to either pay for dental school or invest in the markets, I'd invest in a heartbeat. Solely because education loan interest rates are low right now.

If you want more specific advice on your portfoloio, and you feel comfortable discussing that with a stranger, send me a PM. I was stock broker with Morgan Stanley in my previous life. I'd be happy to help with what I can. But, your best bet, is to meet with your financial advisor.

I don't live in the middle of nowhere, and I still haven't received it either. But I did just sign a lease on an apartment 1 block from the school. Just a studio, but clean, quiet building, doesn't smell, etc. $1065/mo isn't cheap, but the location is hard to beat.

Hello everyone -- Just wanted to say hi to my future classmates. I didn't find this website till recently, but there seems to be a lot of us on here.

I don't live in the middle of nowhere, and I still haven't received it either.
Same thing w/me. And I even live IN the Bay Area. But I guess it's something I can wait for. Looks like there's a list going, so I'll add myself, though I'll be relying on everyone else to motivate me to do most of these activities.

No call. I guess that means no housing for me. 🙁

None for me either. I wonder if they called everyone on Teusday. They were so prompt about calling for acceptances, I kind of think that they might have gotten through the housing list in one day. Well I guess I'll have to venture out into the city. 😳

not sure if they called everyone but i got a call yest too, no presidio though, how far are those from the regular apartments?. you guys should just call and ask. couldn't hurt.

The presidio apartments are pretty far from regular housing, which is only 10 min walk from campus. The presidio is over by the golden gate bridge, so you're looking at maybe a 45 min walk up a steep ass hill. You'll likely need some sort of transportation from the presidio, the bus being the easiest.

I called and talked to Kathy about housing, she said that everyone should have been called whether they where chosen for housing or not. Also she said that for those of us who did not received housing there are some instructions for joining a yahoo group to find prospective room mates and that they would be mailing us out some suggestion for appartments.

Dental pilot, what apartments did you get that rate for? I checked on the 2000 post and their studios are over $1300.

Anyone have a good idea what is reasonable to pay in that area for a safe clean well taken care of place (or atleast what should be expected)?

check out www.craigslist.org and go to sf city and search under pacific heights and the surrounding areas... seems like you can find a studio for under 1500 a month, 2 bedroom apts might be cheaper...

so did anyone else get lucky in the lottery and get pacific apartment housing? anyone know when we find out more information about whether we received two bedrooms/three bedroom places and when move-in day is?

Ya I was wondering the same thing, she called and told me that they are sending the leases out and that once we turn in the deposit they'll give us the names of our roommate/s, which makes me assume that I will be having a roommate. heck maybe its you never know. i guess 23 years of never getting so much as a $5 gift certificate from a lottery has finally came to an end. I hope we can move in around the 1st of july, that would be nice

It's just a small private building, 12 apartments I think... A graduating 3rd year is living there now, and is moving out, that's how I found it. But I'd also recommend craigslist, there have been a few studios on there recently in pacific heights in the 1000-1200 range. In other parts of the city you might find quite a bit cheaper, maybe as low as 700 (I'm not really sure), but obviously not as convenient.

Hey Sherm or anyone else that knows SF well. How is traffic/parking for those with motorcycles? I heard having a car in SF is soemtimes more of a burden than a convenience, is it the same for motorcycles? No one called me from pacific to tell me whether I won the lotto or not. I guess Ill be looking for a roommate and an apt.

Parking's really easy with a motorcycle. There are lots of spaces everywhere where a motorcycle can fit legally, but no way any car would. UOP has designated parking on campus for motorcycles as well. At night however, if you don't have a garage, getting a nice bike might not be a good idea. Tons of theft here.

As for traffic, its definitely easier with a bike, but the likelihood of you getting killed is also way higher. People seriously don't pay attention, ever. You gotta ride like you're invisible.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. It looks like there are some good options.

Are there any defined areas that I should try to stay in. I known pacific heights is where the school is, and the UOP housing is in Lower Pac. Heights, but are there invisible lines that I should stay on one side of Like North or South of certain streets. I was reading a review on the Webster Towers on apartmentratings.com and one was stating that there had been 5 street murders within 4 blocks during the last 5 years, with the last being in the parking lot in front of the entrance last year.

San Francisco is a really small city, so a lot of good neighborhoods will border right on bad ones. There are a ton of district names, many of which I don't even know though I grew up here. 😳

I use this Muni map a lot of times to help me check on districts and bus lines.
http://transit.511.org/providers/maps/SF_923200345324.pdf

Areas around campus you'll probably want to avoid are the Western Addition, Cathedral Hill, and the Tenderloin. Hayes Valley is a little more on the fence. It's improved a lot over the years but I still find it a little on the not so safe side at night.

In general, the farther north you go from campus, the nicer places will be. If you don't mind living a little farther, crappier weather, and taking the bus, the Richmond will probably net you the most bang for your buck.

I haven't received mine either, and I'm a California resident! I'm thinking of calling on Monday if I don't get it by then.

Well, I take some comfort in knowing that I'm not the only one who hasn't heard about the loans yet.

Also, I got a 3-bd apt in the Presidio through the lottery, but I turned it down because we found a place in Marin. So, hopefully, that opened up some spots for any of you who were hoping to get a place out in the Presidio.

Thanks for the map Crazy_Sherm, that is helpful so is staying to the north

hey all, my name is Matthew Hashimoto and i'll be joining all of you this July at Pacific. Just wanted to drop a line and say whats up and that I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. My aim is hashpotatoes, and I'm currently at UOP's stockton undergrad campus, getting ready to graduate in about 2 weeks. Hope that everyone will enjoy their last few months before school starts, if anyone is going to plan a vacation in Hawaii this summer let me know, it would be cool to meet some of you before school started. take care, peace out!

hey guys i just attended a speech/ Q and A with Dr. Dugoni, he was talking to the predental society at my school along with who ever else wanted to attend. I wish you all would have been able to go, it was extremely inspiring and definitely made me proud to be going into the dental profession and to Pacific. I knew our school was good but I didn't realize all of the different aspects. anyways just thought i'd throw that out there, see you all semi soon

Whats going on fellas. My name is Chris and ill also be joining you all next year. Im a senior right now at Pacific's undergrad campus out in Stockton. I just found out from Sumit(another classmate) about this site. Just letting you know that there are i think thirty students from the stockton campus coming next year, so ill tell the ones i know about this site so that well have alot more students on this forum. I think you guys are doing a great job with this forum and it makes me want to meet you guys. Im from LA and will be home for the month long summer so if any of you want to go chill, let me know. My sn is CTHATAE. Also for those of you like me that didnt get housing, when are you going to start searching and how early is the earliest you will sign a contract. At the amount we are going to be paying, i dont want to rent too early. Long forward to meeting you all.
chris hatae

Welcome Chris, where in LA are you from. I live in Orange County and am planning on moving up around July 1. I am looking for a place to live now and am trying to decide between finding a roommate and getting a studio. The studio would be more expensive, but I've never had a room mate before (unfamiliar with the situation). I am open to the idea though. We should definately grab lunch or something. Anyone else want to join?

I used to live out in Covina which is near Pomona and CLaremont. When i was a freshman up here at Pacific, my parents moved to Huntington Beach. SoCalDentist, where in OC are you from?

I live 15 miles (15-20 minutes) north of Huntington Beach. Off Beach Blvd. Where did you go to high school? I have a couple of cousins that live in Covina.

Hey all,

I was browsing through the UOP site and it looks like they updated the website. Here are the numbers that they publish for the incoming class (I'm not sure if this is us or the current first years).

"Our incoming class averages are:

Academic average 21
Perceptual ability 19
Reading comprehension 21
Quantitative reasoning 19
Biology 20
General chemistry 21
Organic chemistry 22
Total science 21 "

"Our incoming class Grade Point Average (GPA) averages are: overall GPA - 3.28 and science GPA - 3.23."

"This year more than 2,500 individuals applied for 140 positions."

Looks like a pretty solid set; accepting 140 out of 2500, I think that is just more than 5% (I know more than 140 are accepted, but from what I've heard they didn't have to reach very far into the waiting list to fill the class). Congratulations to everyone.

I am really doing everything but writing the paper that I have due this week. Here is a site by the SFPD that shows all of the events that have occurred around an area. It is pretty cool you can see where exactly something happened and minor details on it. It might help people decide what area to choose an apartment in (I'll keep it in mind anyway).

This one shows the robbery/ assaults 1 mile around the campus for the last 60 days.

Just go to the "what" tab to change the occurance or "where" to change the address.

I hope no one gets paranoid. I just prefer to be informed (since I'm not from the area.)

Good luck in everyones house hunting
