I'm helping one of the profs on a survey type research project that's part of a larger collaborative effort with dental schools throughout the country.The part I'm working on involves surveying community clinics in CA, both medical and dental ones to assess access to dental care and the clinics' capacity for serving patients. We're hoping to use the data to determine the need for residents or dental students to rotate through the clinics.

Though it may sound kinda interesting, my ACTUAL work involves verifying addresses, stuffing envelopes, entering data, and answering phones. But it's cool since I likely wouldn't be working otherwise, the hours are flexible, and people are cool. It's nice to get to meet some of the staff and faculty before starting school.

I'm locked up in a closet they call room 607, so if anyone comes to visit the school, please come knock on my door. 🙂

I'm trying to figure that out right now... definitely something relaxing. I graduate June 11th, and then have to haul up all of my furniture a piles of stuff. I'm thinking of getting away to Hawaii and/or river rafting for a week or so, and then just gonna hang out by the pool and relax at my parents house in Marin. Oh and start to look for an apartment....

Hey all,

Just got back from SF on Saturday. We had a ton of fun. I won't bore you with all of the details, but we got a pretty good idea of where we should live. In fact, there is a little apartment complex in Marin that has rents at $1450/mo for a 2bd/2ba. It looks like we are going to be going there.

If you want to read more of the specifics, check out www.ddsdiary.com. I plan on leaving a longer description of my trip on that site.

Anyhow, I went to the school on Friday, met with some students (to chat about housing), and sat down with Marco the financial aid guy. I didn't learn anything new that wasn't posted here already. He said we should be getting some information at the beginning of May.

I did ask about Pacific's housing and the housing at the Presidio. Specifically, I asked about when we could move-in if we got a lottery spot, and the gal said it would be the first of July or so. That might be helpful for you guys that are planning on moving into their housing.

I don't know where I heard that, but I figured it was what locals called the place. I'm glad you had a fun trip. I should have warned you about the horrible traffic in San Rafael - it's definitely better to be close to the bridge, preferably before Corte Madera. What city is your apartment in? Or maybe that's a little too personal. It's nice that you were able to secure it this early. I found the perfect place but it's availiable two months too early - ahhh! Oh well.


In other news I just sent in all of my paperwork today. I'm hoping there's some turnover because my friend Alex in on the alternate list (he sent his app in late). They told him he would know after this week. I'm too lazy to go through the whole tread, but how many of us are confirmed as UOP Class of 2008? I know we lost Dreday, I'll start the list...

My wife is headed out to secure housing for us from June 3-10. I was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to buy a place in San Francisco with monthly mortgage payments for roughly the same price as rent ($1500).

By the way, I play Halo 2 on xbox live with a bunch of first year UOP students so it sounds like the first year is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. One of them claims he is ranked #1 academically at the school right now. I guess xbox helps with manual dexterity skills! 😀

I don't really think it's possible. I was looking into buying a place for a while with my parents help, but the market is just insane. I didn't see anything decent for under $500,000. A friend of mine has been trying to buy a place for over a year and he has had no luck whatsoever (and he is expecting to pay quite a bit more monthly). Unless you live significantly far from campus, I don't think you will find much. Sorry. I think we all have to pretty much suck it up and pay rent. 🙁 Luckily the rental market is a lot better then it was a few years ago .

I'm still interested in the possibility though, anyone else have any insight?

I'm adding you to the list too, there's quite a few of us!

The housing market is still pretty insane out here. You'll probably need to be able to either put a lot down if you want to cut the mortgage down to $1500/m, or be willing to live in the ghetto or a closet.

Just to give you an idea, my mom just refinanced her 900 sq. ft condo in Noe Valley last year and it was appraised at $540k. Her neighbor also sold his 700 sq ft condo last year. He got $650k because he had a garage too. Its crazy how much a parking space goes for here.

I think these three years will be the last I live in SF proper. Even though I love it here, you just don't get enough bang for the buck when it comes to housing.

Thanks for the info. No, my stats are not higher than yours 👎 . Still have DAT ahead of me though. I might call the school, but making an appointment to meet them is out of the question. I live on the east coast, ha. Unless you know of a cheap teleporter I could use?

The traffic was just as you say--not bad south of Corte Madera (we actually looked at some housing out there, but nothing too promising). The apartment is in Marin, just off the Marin/Sausalito exit. Not as much grass for the kiddies to play on, but being picky isn't much of an option at the rent we want to pay. And, we haven't actually secured it. The manager said to call on May 1 and she'd hold us a spot. I wish it were all set now, but it is kinda early. I don't think we'll have a problem with getting it. She said she knows of half-a-dozen married dental students that live there and she knows a few of them are getting ready to move soon. Another benefit of the contract is that it's month-to-month, so we don't have to sweat a long lease.

Is it just me or are we a much tighter knit group than the other matriculating classes? Look at how many posts we have and how many posts the other schools have. I have a feeling the next 3 years wont be so bad.

This is excellent. More than 10% of our class on these boards. W/ surnames revealed we can speculate if any of us will be in the same row. I've added what my nickname would have been if I could do it all over again.

My plan is to come july 8 with a disheveled look including wild hair and full beard before we all have to take on the accountant look for our photo ID pics on Monday. To hear just one classmate query, "who's that creepy mountain-man?!" will make it worth it.
