Classes started today. Things went really well, however, I wasn't ready to start going to classes from 8am to 5pm. By the end of the day I was exhausted.

I'm keeping a daily blog on what goes on at Pacifc during the first year. This is akin to what Gavin did with Arizona two years ago. Pacific had over 2,500 applicants last cycle and I think it might be interesting to predents to see what they will experience if they are accepted to Pacific.

Here it is--the first day of school. I had dreams about school last night, so it's obviously been on my mind. I'm eager to get through the day, meet new people, and get my first taste of dental school.

I'm meeting up with two other first year dental students and one second year student. We are going to carpool into school at 7am. Registration and a light breakfast will start at 7:30am. At 8am, we will Dr. Dugoni will address us. And, after that, the rest of the day hasn't been described to us. The letter we recieved in March told us to plan to be here until 4pm and to have a ride home so that we could carry 2 large (60-lbs) boxes of books home--ouch!

I'll post more tonight about what we did during the day.

We arrived at the school around 7:15am, and to my surprise, there were already at least half of the students there. What was even wierder was that they were all wearing blue dress shirts. It was almost like it was coordinated by Pacific.

After a short breakfast, we moved down to room 103 on the first floor where Dr. Dugoni, the dean, addressed us for two hours. He talked about the responsibility we had as students, the return on our investment, our health, and other various topics. I was impressed with his candor and his experience. It was obvious this man had had his finger on the pulse of dentistry for nearly 60 years.

After listening to the dean, we had to do some paperwork, pick up some lab clothes (smocks and gloves) and eat lunch.

After lunch, it was Christmas at Pacific. We went up to sim labs and unpacked $16,000 worth of equipment. I got a first look at my hi-speed and low-speed handpieces. We also got to check out all of the burs that we will have to become familiar with. I couldn't believe all of the stuff we unpacked. In the end we unpacked 4 or 5 good size boxes (around 2' x 2'). Essentially, we unpacked enough stuff to run a one operatory dental office. I wish I could list some of the things we unpacked, but I'm not even sure what it all was.

By 4:30, I was exhausted. The second year students who were there to help us unpack invited all the first years to a night out at the "Dirty Martini." I passed. I had other plans.

Tomorrow, we go into school to get our laptops. I'm a little geeked out to get it. It'll be nice to have a good computer. Check back tomorrow for more.

JavadiCavity,
This journal is great idea. It will give us pre-dentals a good idea of what awaits us.
It's pretty obvious from your post that you don't drink!
Cool, man, keep us updated!

Sweetie, with the nicest way possible, I want to ask you two questions:

1. How old are you? You look at least 30 and write like you are 18.(having dreams of school?)

2. Are those your children and how in the world can you afford to go to UOP for 3 years with a family? (seems selfish?)

thanks,

IAS

Wow. If that wasn't the dumbest post I've read here in a while, I don't know what is. Obviously when you think about something alot you will dream about it. If you are heavily involved in work, you dream about it, etc. It seems selfish to go to dental school and give your family a better life than what they could have had? Sure, the 3 years might be a little rough, but thats what loans are for. How many people pay UOP straight up and have no debt at the end? Virtually none. Honestly, your post was in terrible taste. Besides, it looks like you're trying to flame the guy and all he did was try and make life a little easier for potential dental students of UOP. Get a life.

1. I'm 28, and ... it's not even worth a response to second part of that question.

2. Selfish? I'll make sure to pass the word on to the 8 or 9 other first year dental students I met yesterday with 2 or more children.

Blackstars,

Apparently, they booted sara out of the hole she WAS in for having such a winning personality.

Saturday, July 9, 2005, 12:00pm

At 9:00am this morning we had computer orientation. The meeting lasted for 90 minutes. I was placed in the "Advanced" orientation. There are two other orientations today--one for intermediate and one for novice computer users. In April or May, they sent students a computer survey. Based on the results they placed us in one of the three sections. It's my opinion that if you have ever turned on a computer, you will do just fine in the advanced computer orientation.

The computers are nice. We got 1 gig of RAM, a 1.86 gHz Pentium M processor, and a 55 gig hard drive. They gave us all of our login information to access the school networks. Wireless internet is only available in the cafeteria. But, if you are in a good spot in the simlab then you can actually access it from there. They have ethernet ports at each simlab station, so if you can't access the wireless internet, you can still get connected with an ethernet cable.

So that's it for today. We report to class on Monday at 7:30am to go through some more orientation, and our first class. However, by Tuesday, we are into the full swing of things when we start Anatomy/Histology.

Well I would say that you are definitely paying out the butt for it at UOP. Their tuition is outrageous. Maybe that school thinks that their dentists can bill out more. Thats why I didnt apply there.

Too much $.

Hey, calm down with the Post! I don't think you know who your talking to! JavadiCity has been a member here for quite some time now, and he's even going out of his way to keep a journal of his experiences at UOP (kind of like what Gavin did for Arizona), a lot of that is appreciated by me and many others who have interests in UOP! In is an expensive school, no doubt, but the city is First Rate! I think it's worth it! Also, the only D-School with a 3 year program! So please show some respect...thanks.

Ok no problem.
The tuition is ridiculous however and I would rather go to another school and have a life later.

This guy will have to work 10 years to just pay off that tuition. Also, how is UOP so great that they can have a 3-year program?

How are they an accredited school if thats the case? Doesnt make sense to me at all.

Sara,

Why do you have to criticize this guy just because he has kids? Perhaps he gets more enjoyment from spending time with his family than whatever you like to do. I don't have kids but I'd much rather spend time with my wife than go out and party with my friends. Sounds like you're the selfish one. Who cares how much the school is... being only 3 years he'll make a lot of money that 4th year while you're still in class.

Just a bit of advice Sara, perhaps you should brush up on your people skills before you start interviewing...

Have a nice day.

Also, just wanted to note that my guess is I AM SARA = IanWright.

Have you ever even researched dental schools before? Wait, you're a high school student that just found out mommy and daddy's password to the internet, right?

I personally appreciate the log you are doing. It's really informative and it sure helps to keep me motivated at 2am studying for some class. I really look forward to dental school and it's great to hear from someone at one of my top choice schools doing this for me. And as for having kids during the whole process, that deserves even more respect. If I were to have kids I would be very thrilled to pay the extra money to cut the process down by 1 year to minimize the family disruption.

And I agree, Sarah isn't contributing much to the open forum, just seems to want to start an arguement. Building quite a reputation though, looks like the account is brand new.

Thanks!

Hey I did absolutely nothing to get banned!

Also, I am keeping copies of the insulting vulgar PMs that you are sending me.

You are the one that will get banned for talking the way you are to me.

You just called me a name too and that is illegal here.

You will end up gettin banned.

hey, what % of students at UoP are from the east coast? Iowa doesnt count. I wonder if it would be scary to go to a school 3000miles away from your home? I for example go to a school 400miles away from home, and feel the distance from my parents is just right. There are many schools on the east coast, so the only advantage to UoP seems to be the climate. Also, i know youre not single, but i am. I wonder what is california like for meeting girls(after all the school is 3-4 years, and if you go to school there you will probably stay there either for residency or even to open a practice)? Ive only been there once and i noticed that guys there are all right. But most girls are very trashy compared to the northeast.

i really hate to contribute to this pointless argument with lack of any substance, but i couldn't help but laugh at this last post. Is it just me or does it totally seem like 4th grade? "you just called me a name" and "YOU're the one thats going to get in trouble"....wow. I can't wait to hear what dental schools Sara is applying to. I bet some place like Harvard would enjoy her thought-provoking comments.

I read his old posts. Hes just a junior in college. What a LIAR!

Like I would care, but would anyone care to tell this guy that Harvard isnt even a good dental school.

So if hes trying to pick up a lady with brains telling her he is in Harvard is not so great!

Quit beattin on me guys. All I did was ask this guy jadawhoever a couple of questions.

mmmm

I didnt know that you had to provoke the admission committees to get a spot.

I guess all I have to fall back on now is my 3.89 GPA and 19 DAT.

I hope I get in.

WOW you have just made it clear that you have no idea what constitutes a good dental school. Are you telling me that Harvard and UOP, two schools who attract the highest caliber dental students are not good schools? Interesting!! 🙄 🙄

Sorry about changing topic.

Actually I have one question. You said you had unwrapped like $16,000 worth of equipment and I was wondering if the equipment was for yourself or the lab as a whole. Is this equipment usually covered under the tuition fee?

This is a great idea. As has been said, this should really help pre-dents get an idea of what it's like day-to-day. Thanks for doing this! 😀

Yes the equipment is covered under the fees and it was mostly just for me.

Cool blog. Good luck at Pacific. I remember unpacking my $2500 worth of stuff 3 yrs ago. $16,000, wow. I can't even imagine what you get for that. Anyway, enjoy your first year... kind of an oxymoron.. but try.

from Javadi's wife

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is Javadi's wife. He would never tell you this, but, in the first place, he has a 3.8 and got a 23 on the DAT. He got into MANY schools but we chose UOP for the three years and because it has one of the best clinical educations in the country. He asked some direct questions about root canals on second molars and invisalign, implant work, etc. and UOP offers the most varied and best clinical educations. They are certainly one of the top clinical schools in the nation. Most schools teach you to refer what Pacific teaches you how to treat. Also he got a scholarship that makes tuition nearly the same as every other private school and less than the Boston and NY schools. Add to that the fact that we are only paying three years of living expenses here in SF and it all comes out in the wash. We didn't have a state school so the cost is very similar as it would have been anywhere else.

As for being selfish, look at: http://www.studentdoctor.net/diary/display.asp?ID=3040 and click on read question and read about someone else who thought Javadi selfish. The little blondy in the pic almost died at birth and Javadi had to work so we decided to take charge of our future and go back to school. He is a good man. One of the best...

Fantastic! good for him. I had a 3.89 GPA and double majored in Biochem and Bio. So his stats dont impress me.

I was just curious as to how someone with so many responsibilites would make such a life change. I understand now, money. He decided to 'take care of his future' right?

Now quit sending me e-mails and put your kids to bed.

Please quit posting, Sara. Everytime you post you make yourself look worse than before. Also, "this thread needs closed" is not correct grammar. Please type your posts in MS Word and do a spell check or take an ESL class before posting again.

I took the DAT last week and have already answered over 30 Pms about questions on it.

Thats about the best help a person could get on here I would think.

I took the KAPLAN course and found it to be unfortunately not comparable to the real DAT. I got 20+ on all tests except one QR and only got a 19.

What is everyone else using to study?

Hey Sara you may have nice stats, but I can gurantee with that attitude you will be turned away everywhere you interview. Good luck 😛

Hey guys, just don't tempt him/her, this person just wants attention. Either put him/her on your ignore list, or don't respond or PM him/her.

The more and more posts we get from trolls, the less and less valuble SDN becomes for ALL of us!

I second the motion. And for the record, SDN is not a public forum; there are some ground rules which are meant to guide discussion, foster debate, and deter corrosive behavior. 😉
