pain fellowship questions

So these Qs were not found by me on the FAQ section:

I am a CA-2 now, CA3 in July. I was told by some current pain fellows and my attending pain management doc to apply now. I have applied to five places now, and my apps just lack the Letters of Recommendation(hopefully there soon).

My chief said "You should know where you are going by October" (Fall of my CA-3 year)

Comments? Is this ridculous?

Also, current pain fellow tells me "There are always open spots SOMEWHEREin pain." Is this true and how do I find out besides calling programs, one by one?
