Have you guys ever heard of anyone getting drug questions on parasites such as tapeworms, or pinworms. Our medical school used a system based approach and we didn't cover drugs for worms during the school year. Thanks

I just took the USMLE yesterday and there was one question on the treatment of a worm. There is a page in first aid in the micro section that has a list of all the medically important helminths and their treatment.

For what its worth, the Kaplan pharm guy was just at my school and he told us that its low yield. So, I second the above poster.

No kidding. The hillbilly from England, Arkansas came through, huh. Trust me, his fake accent makes him sound much smarter than he really is in life.

Hmmm....this guy was from Pikeville,KY via Georgia. I'm sure Kaplan (in order to accomodate all the schools and still turn a nice profit) hired more than one guy to do pharmacology. This guy was definately a hillbilly in his own right!

Yea, we had him too; I wasn't impressed at all.

Last week, I had 2 questions and mebendazole/albendazole was the answer for both. One was a little kid with pinworms.

I thought the treatment of choice for pinworm was pyrantel pamoate. Mebendazole in general is the treatment for most worms, but I am pretty sure pinworm's DOC is pyrantel pamoate.

The way I remember it is BEND AZZ (MeBENDAZZhole/ThiaBENDAZZhole) for all worms that come out of your AZZ.

Bam...Now everyone that read this post will remember the DOC for AZZ worms for their Step 1 exam.

You can use either with pinworms.

Of course the real important factor is the followup question which will revolve around "other" treatment. Pinworm is easy to get so you treat the whole family and they need to wash pretty much all of juniors dirty clothes, sheets, and towels.

And don't forget to retreat 2 weeks later, because you will only kill the worms and not the eggs... 👍
