Hi everyone-

I'm a chemist transitioning to CLS (clinical laboratory scientist). Could anyone who was or is a CLS please give me some advice? Are there any part time morning positions? When I look through job openings, I have so far seen night shifts, or morning full time (6am to 2:30pm).

Thank you!

I was a CLS! However, that was about 4 years ago. Try going on the hospital websites and navigate to 'careers' or where they will have listed job openings. They often have per diem positions. Also, you can call hospitals around you and ask; sometimes they aren't posted.

Um, it really depends on where you are. If the hospitals don't have anything listed, you can always call and ask. Sometimes if you don't have anything, they might like part-timer for coverage, don't know about morning ones being common, but you might be able to find something.
Are you in school for CLS, certified, etc?

I am applying to a one year CLS program. I was a chemist, but the job market is not very good. So this might be a good time for me to switch career. However, due to family reasons, I would like to work part time mornings. And I would like to find out if such positions are available before I plunge into CLS. Thanks. Any advice is appreciated.
I will definitely give hospitals a call. I'm in southern CA.

Mornings might be tough, but the area you're in should help. don't know if weekends are an option, but I've been working 10hour shifts on Fri, Sat, Sun and with a weekend shift differential I make close to what reg dayshifters make even though I'm not full time, so if thats an option people rarely turn down someone who wants to work mostly weekends. Don't forgot to look at blood centers like American red cross, universities, clinics, some biomed corporations, even Sea World had openings for CLS folks which i though was odd since thats animals not humans. CLS such a good is a very good career option with pretty good job security. You aren't likely to to get a definitive answer before you start, but I definitely recommend the field.

Sorry, one more question, what is the average pay for a CLS (just graduated). Thanks.

Varies greatly by region. I think starting in this region in the Midwest is about 23/hr. with almost 6 years of experience I'm at 30/hr. I think when I was looking for jobs several years ago, southern CA jobs paid much much more to account for the cost of living.
Not uncommon to get shift differentials for evenings, nights, and weekends. Clinics will pay less than hospitals. Benefits are often pretty good.

Edit* an eve shift position at UCLA that's posted right now lists an hourly range of $37-49/ hour
