Hey Everyone,

Does anyone have any advice as to where to obtain patient care hours for MD and DO programs? I have a degree in psychology and have been offered a part-time job at a treatment center mainly assisting teens with various types of issues (from drugs and sex addiction to lying and compulsion disorders). In this job I would be working hands on with individuals as they progress towards functioning in society and transitioning to adulthood. Do you think this would satisfy the patient care requirement on MD and DO most applications? Or would I be better off focusing on a more traditional job, such as CNA, or EMT.

Thanks for your insight!

if you are close enough that you could smell the patients, it counts.

sounds like it might kind of be more like social work instead of healthcare though... with this program, is there any healthcare treatment or anything?

i'd wait for some more opinions. you certainly don't NEED to be a CNA or EMT. thousands of people get in who have jobs in grocery stores, department stores, call centers, etc.

Not all volunteering needs to be in a hospital. Think hospice, Planned Parenthood, nursing homes, rehab facilities, camps for sick children, or clinics. Check out your local houses of worship for volunteer opportunities.

Service need not be "unique". If you can alleviate suffering in your community through service to the poor, homeless, illiterate, fatherless, etc, you are meeting an otherwise unmet need and learning more about the lives of the people (or types of people) who will someday be your patients.
