What are the hours most of the OTs you have shadowed work? I was attracted to OT actually about 6 years ago because I shadowed a PT who worked part time, and I plan on working part-time, meaning about 30 hours a week at most. How many of you are planning on working part-time following graduation?

Great question!

I shadowed at the local easter seals pediatric service. Out of the almost dozen OTs there, only one worked full time. And she was a recent grad who was pregnant and soon to be on maternity leave. The rest of the OTs were part time ( except for the supervising OT). And it sounded like they chose their hours/days for work. One of the OTs I was close to only worked three days a week.

When I graduate, I will probably be full time. But once I have kids? Who knows!

Was that site their only job? Because some OTs have more than one job. Most sites I volunteered at had full time OTs, but there are a lot of part-time OTs. One of the reasons I have recently decided to go the COTA route instead is that I want 25 hours/or maybe like 3 days a week, for reasons not mentioned, I don't need to worry about my own health insurance, but many part-time jobs will let employees get coverage. I wonder why so many are only part-time! The speech therapist I work with gets 28 hours a week, and she wishes she got 60 because the kids need help, and the speech therapists that my mom work with share that feeling, but they are all working within the public school/education system so that is why they are 28 hours a week.

The OTs were all family moms, so they chose to be part time. As far as I know, only one had another job, but I believe it was more of an on call type of thing and it did not take her to 40 hrs a week.

I plan on working full-time. The majority of the OT's I shadowed worked full time. Only 1 worked part time coming in only on Wednesday & Fridays for full days. I do however like the flexibility of the field in that you could work part time.

I will probably never work a 40 hour week again in my life.
