I would like to make a comprehensive list of which schools are pass/fail! Please comment whether your vet school is pass/fail and I will add it to the list.

VMCVM is fully pass/fail. From the student handbook: "All courses and clerkships are graded Pass (P) or Fail (F)."

UofI is graded didactics and p/f clinics

At AVC we have a few pass/fail courses, primarily in the "professional development" category. Clinical rotations are also pass/fail, & you get up to 3 "marginal performance' chances.

This is a chart I found on reddit that was really blurry so I made it into a spreadsheet. Some of the info might not be correct but it may help narrow down things!

EDIT - 2+2 means they have a partnership school!

Also LG means letter grade, but I have yet to figure out what CL means (classic or maybe class list?)

That's a beautiful spreadsheet! What do some of the abbreviations stand for? Examples - CL (Classic?), LG??

I will say, University of Minnesota has mixed grading practices - they start at Pass/Fail for the first year aside from small courses that are contract grading (I think that's the professional development course, but I could be wrong, a current student could feel free to correct me!). Then, second year at UMN is about half P/F and half A-F grading with some contract grading, and third year is A-F grading with some contract grading. Clinicals are P/F.

I know this info is up to date because it's what I was shown at their accepted students day!

Thanks for doing this, though - it makes it super easy for future students to quickly compare programs re: grading practices.

Minnesota is also not a 2+2 program. I think there may be some confusion bc of the SDSU partnership, but it is 3 years of didactics and 1 year of clinics.

I would recommend you rephrase it, as 2+2 implies the curriculum is 2 years didactic and 2 years clinical, which some programs do.

Also, please uninstall and reinstall the Tapatalk app and clear your cache to fix the [emoji] issue.

CSU is also not a 2+2 program. If you’re referring to 2+2 as it in offers the opportunity to do 2 years in Alaska and then 2 at the CSU campus, that’s different.

I agree with shorty, it needs to be rephrased.

Yea it does refer to that and I changed it reposted the actual spreadsheet instead of just of photo in its own thread

This chart was made from a reddit post of NAVLE scores that was sent out by the ICVA. On that original chart, it had CSU, Iowa State, Minnesota, Texas A&M, and Washington State listed as the 2+2 programs (because of their partnerships). It makes more sense to classify schools as 2+2 programs, in terms of NAVLE pass rates, when they have a partnership since rates are influenced by 2 separate universities.

I disagree. All of those programs also have DVM students that are not affiliated with the partner schools. If anything, the PARTNER institutions should be listed. But either way, I maintain the 2+2 is misleading in this context when it has historically referred to curricula like Mizzou, where they start clinics after year 2 instead of year 3.

Hello!

I would like to make a comprehensive list of which schools are pass/fail! Please comment whether your vet school is pass/fail and I will add it to the list.

Fully Pass/Fail:
  • Washington State University
  • Virginia-Maryland CVM
  • Ohio State University
  • North Carolina State University
  • University of Arizona

Partially Pass/Fail:
  • University of Florida
    • Graded didactics
    • Pass/fail clinical rotations
  • University of Minnesota
    • Pass/Fail first year only
  • Atlantic Veterinary College
    • Few pass/fail courses, mostly professional development"
    • Clinical rotations are pass/fail
  • University of Tennessee - Knoxville
    • Pass/fail electives
    • Clinical year is pass/fail

Not Pass/Fail:
  • Michigan State University
As far as I know, Mizzou is not a pass/fail school. There are a few classes that are pass/fail (professional skills, clinical skills). I'm pretty sure that the majority of clinical rotations are A-F graded as well, though there may be a couple that opt for pass/fail that I just don't know about.

Do you know how this works? What’s the score needed for pass/fail?
The majority of classes require a 65.0% to pass, although there are a couple that were 70% - it will state it on the syllabus. We still receive percentage grades on each assignment, but we don't have a grade on our transcript & our GPAs are not in any way tracked or available. We do have class rankings that are available upon request from the Office of Professional Program Support, but we truthfully don't use them for anything other than (maybe) scholarships and applying to post-grad training programs.

65%?! 😳 at WSU, our classes require between 75-80% to pass.

The AVMA uses 2+2 to refer to both the partnership schools and two years of clinics schools. Even the schools that are the receiving institutions rather than the institutions sending the students.

Definitely agree it's confusing. But the OP is using appropriate phrasing.

Please share a link to the spreadsheet! Perfectly fine if it’s “view only”.

its on another thread here

Ah yes, I have seen this elsewhere. The original “2+2” column tricked me into thinking it was a different spreadsheet, apologies. Like I said on the other thread, always happy to assist with google sheets formatting, if needed.

im not the owner sadly. I think whoever made this one took off the 2+2 thing because it was semi-incorrect in the original version

I have expanded the infamous NAVLE/Grading Scheme spreadsheet to include more topics that may be useful to future vet applicants. I present, the master spreadsheet.

You all know what to do. Let me know if anything is incorrect or confusing, or if you want to add to a blank cell or new column. Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Rowan’s curriculum is pass/fail, and in their zoom session, they said their classroom style will be traditional.

Only things I have to add are that Mizzou is a classic classroom model and we do not track

@schooby
Thanks for making this! VMCVM does not use the Casper, that's correct, but they do have their own SJT applicants are required to take (as of this past app cycle), that may be worth adding!

Anyone know CSU, Michigan State, or UC Davis’ classroom models, and/or can confirm their grading schemes?

Can we clarify what is meant by CL in grading of courses? I think tOSU's entry is incorrect as currently indicated in the table.

“CL” came from the original spreadsheet, many of us think it means “class list”, aka class rank.

Updated images of the master spreadsheet as of 4/24 at 12:50am EDT

Hoping to fill in more of the classroom model and tracking columns, if possible!
