Pass/Fail

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
P/F or not P/F you are supposed to succeed once you get in. There are others that would kill for a medical student spot. So don't think of P/F think of just striving to be the best. Showing the world what osteopathic doctors are about.

Hey everyone,
I hope not to offend anyone but I was just curious, are any of the Osteopathic Medical Schools Pass/Fail.

Thanks

You shouldn't feel like your going to offend anyone. You have a legit question.

FYI, PCOM is not pass/fail. its value-based grade, 90-100, 80-89 etc., but does not give letter grades. We actually had a good convo with the head of Anatomy in PCOM about this since we were all bored in lab. He said everyone has an A in his book 🙂

From what I've read NYCOM is Pass/Fail but there is honors if you are in the top 10%

Some schools give out numerical grades while others are P/F with honors (or something similar to that) for the top percentiles.

Nova is HP(90+)/P(89-70)/F(<70) BUT we receive our exact numerical grades for each exam, and i heard they email us our 'gpa' 79% or whatever it may be, at the end of the 1st year. And I'm sure that number is included in the dean's letter sent to residencies. The transcript itself I think will just show the HP/P/F.

If he likes us that much he should have made sure my cadaver was in better shape... but McG would say that!

Agree with the above, we are not PF. We must keep a 65+ in SPOM to make it to second term.

Yeah, I was confused about NOVA's P/F system. So ... it's P/F/H, but you get a cumulative GPA at the end which is included in a dean's letter to residencies??? It seems to me like almost all schools that boast a P/F system still have percentiles that show up somewhere??? Is transcript more important to residencies than dean's letter??

Yea every school I have heard of allo and osteo even if "p/f" keep track of the actual grades somewhere and they usually show up in the dean's letter. Sometimes schools will just say student was in top quartile, etc. I'm not exactly sure how nova does it for the dean's letter or any other school for that matter. Your actual percentages will be tracked, and used in some matter.

Three questions.
1. Do you feel that there is more pressure to attain a higher grade because you know there will be a number on your transcript

2. Are the classes based on a curve? Or does everyone that scores 90% get a 90 in the class?

3. What do you think of this system compared to P/F and letter grade systems?

Thanks.

Not for RC, but myself, since we're classmates:

1) I don't feel pressure to obtain a higher grade persay, but I do feel pressure to make sure I reach the cutoff for the course. Currently that is a 65 which isn't too hard to obtain but requires a lot of work. Regardless if the school is P/F, etc, there is a number somewhere. When your Dean provides a letter for residency directors, it would not be helpful to say that Bacchus passed all his classes. Great, does that mean I squeaked by or I did exceptionally well?

2) I think we're not on a curve, what you get is what you get.

3) It takes some time to get used to. An 80 in college was detrimental but in medical school is great. Some proponents of P/F say it eliminates competition but we really don't have any here.
