Past DUKE med interviewee

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If Duke interviewed my this past year, but I was not waitlisted. What are the chances I will get in next year?

Have you called the admissions office and asked why you weren't accepted? They may not tell you directly; however, there's a good chance that they'll point you in the right direction. Based on my experience, I'm guessing it's probably something in your soft skill set (afterall, you had the numbers to get an interview). But again, that's just speculation; your best shot at finding out is what I outlined earlier.

I'm going to take a different point of view.
I wouldn't call them. Likely you didn't get in because one or more interviewers decided they didn't like you, and/or you were a competitive candidate but there were people with better numbers and you just didn't rank high enough to even make the wait list.

I think I would reapply to ANY school that I got an interview at the previous year. Getting an invite last year doesn't mean you will get one this year...they get so many applications each year. But getting rejected last year doesn't mean they automatically won't invite you this year.

They might not even remember you if you call, and to me it might just invite the wrong kind of attention. It probably won't make much difference one way or the other, though.

I don't think I'm a great interviewer (just average). I think I am reserved which may come across to some as standoffish, etc. It didn't keep me out of med school or my desired fellowship, and I really do get along great with patients and others. I do think interviewing is a skill that can be learned. Remember that you are "selling" a product to the committee (YOU!). You want to always act enthusiastic, smile a lot and be very, very friendly to everyone. Remember they do not know you and will judge you based on things that are superficial and don't have much to do with you as a person. Stay positive and don't take it personally.

Unless your application looks significantly better, I wouldnt count on it. Applicants are getting better and better each year.
