Greetings all!

I have been checking out this forum and enjoying the tips and advice from everyone. I have a question of my own...and would like to know your opinion on:

I am a US Citizen Carribean Med student. I passed Step 1 (beat the mean- luck was w/me on that day 🙂), did a PSF in path, have a master's in Health Sci Admin, and used to be a histotech. After the PSF I pretty much made up my mind that Path is the way to go and have no doubts about it. My dilemma however is, what programs to shoot for? Would I be reaching if i went for the BIG guys like MGH, U-Wash, Stanford or is it still worth a try (even with the IMG status?) Do any of you know of IMG's that were close to my stats?

Anyhow, I appreciate any words you guys have to toss back at me. Good luck to all of you and talk to you guys later.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Your stats are good, but your biggest advantage is being a US citizen. There will likely be many FMGs that have better stats than you, but will not get offers. You most likely will. As for applying to your top programs go for it, just have backups as well. If the big programs grant you an interview then you have a chance, if not no problem some of your other choices will.

Just a word of caution, my program which I would rank as a mid level program when it comes to prestige, interviewed only one FMG last year. Not sure where we ranked him, but he didn't get in here. We didn't go far down our rank list. So when I say have backups you should apply to lots of backups. Sorry if I just worried anyone out there, but better to apply to too many places than not enough.

Good luck.

I appreciate the tips guys and will keep them in mind!

I'm applying for next year's match, but have already started compiling a list of programs. One advantage (if you want to call it that) to being a FMG is that we travel all over the States for rotations and I'm trying to get a taste of Path programs everywhere I end up.

Regardless, lets see what happens... Thanks again folks and talk to y'all later!

Global,

My only thought is for you to hang tough, apply broadly as has been noted in the above posts, and you should be fine!! Best of luck to you.

Hi bluemoon, welcome.

Welcome to the new guys/gals

I think that applying to programs of all levels, if only just for kicks is always worthwhile. You never know what a program will find interesting about you. Not everyone does a PSF or has rock star grades and if you don't, find something else about you that you can offer a program and write about it in the PS. MAKE YOURSELF SOUND AS INTERESTING AS YOU REALLY ARE!

Most of us are diamonds in the rough.

Thanks for welcoming GP and Scope!
