Hello all, recently started studying for my step 1, and I bought a subscription from pathoma, but how importnat is it to actually read the book? or is it okay to just watch the videos? or if you are reading the book are you reading it seperately from the videos or just following along with it? reading the book before the videos and then watching it? Appreciate the help.

I listen to the videos and then read the book once. Reading a chapter only takes 30 minutes after listening to the videos so it's well worth it.

I see, im in a bit of a pickle as i believe Goljan is a beast of his own, so what about watching pathomas videos, but then reading the corresponding topic in goljan?

i used pathoma in a weird way. i used to follow with the book. but now i just listen to it casually while doing stuff around the house like laundry and whatnot. keeps me productive.

Dr. Sattar peaks so lucidly that I can comprehend and follow along without visualizing in the book and even while doing other things. I can't stand Goljan, sorry, the laugh, and the thought interruptions were too much for me. I don't understand what is so great about it. seems super low yieldy.

Yeah that's because you don't know enough to understand how good goljan is. He talks about mechanisms and why things happen. He makes connections for you that you should have made yourself. Pathoma is great but facts are nothing more than facts. The people I see doing especially well are the ones who can put things together, not the ones going through anki or firecracker or picmonic.

I'm guessing if I can put connections together that I should have made myself without Goljan doing it for me, then I must be doing really well 👍 I listened to a few Goljan lectures. Maybe they are more appropriate during the school year if you are having a hard time putting details together and have loads of free time. I just don't think it's worth it for board review whereas pathoma is. I also thought picmonic was pointless, but to each their own. I only used anki a little first year... I simply don't have the time to make my own cards, and I didn't like using other people's decks due to errors and idiosyncrasies. I used firecracker for pharm which helped a little bit because it was my weakest. Honestly, Uworld and Google were my biggest sources for anything I had trouble with.

To the OP, I think following along with the book is a great thing to do if your mind tends to wander. He sometimes mentions key points which are nice to write down in the margin. He also mentions text errors from time to time so it would be helpful to have it out to see if your book is a corrected version or not. I however only had the book in front of me 50% of the time. As previously stated, I enjoyed to just listen to it on the headphones while doing other things, like driving around, getting groceries, etc.
