My friend and I were having a debate...he says pathoma is far too little detail for boards and its only very elementary basics.

This true? I didn't think so, seems detailed to me..help me plz! thx

Pathoma is better for understanding. It's not as detailed as Goljan, but then again you're not going to remember even 60% of the details in Goljan unless you have an insane memory. I barely remember a chapter of Goljan the second I finish reading it. It's really kind of sad.

Understanding is more important in the long run. People I know who did Pathoma last year did very well on Step 1 (>250's).

It is better for intro and review than for substantive studying. I've heard it's good for boards, shelves, cabinets, and other carpentry but not necessarily school courses.

I liked Pathoma because Dr. Sattar was to-the-point and explained concepts well; I disliked Goljan audio because he was poorly organized, did not explain concepts well, and was dated. Pathoma is just path; RR is path with micro. Dr. Sattar covered every single disease in his book, while Goljan skipped entire pages. In my case, outlines do not work for me, so naturally, I found pathoma to be much better than RR path.

Pathoma is great for getting a introduction to the material, building a foundation, and learning the very highest-yield concepts.

He's right, Pathoma is just good for getting the basic understanding and big picture. You gotta fill in the details yourself.

I'm talking purely as a board review. I'm reading big robbins for school (its required)

For board review, it's fine, but sometimes knowing the physiology helps strengthen the concepts. So those extra "details" can make a big difference sometimes. For me, I gotta understand how everything works, I don't like memorizing. Many books leave out the physiology b/c they think it's too much detail, but I think that detail actually helped me remember the other things.

Pathoma isn't about memorizing.

Not sure why he would go into details about anything other than path though...its a PATH review. IMO you should not even attempt to study path for step 1 until you have micro/biochem/physio down cold. This way, the diseases are NOT memorization, rather many of them are intuitive

I didn't say it was. My point is that you can have a BETTER understanding by going out of your way to learn just a bit more than the minimum.

Why does everyone say that you can use nothing but Pathoma and score 250 on boards? Problem officer?

Do whatever you think works best for you.. It's really as simple as that.

Reading Goljan Rapid Review is like reading a dictionary to me, but some like it. It's in one ear, out the other. I'm a question bank kind of guy.

People have said good things about Pathoma too.

Don't spread yourself too thin with resources though.

Seems to be a fine line...as I find myself with big robbins, RR, BRS path, pathoma, and gunner training.

How much of that will I actually read? LOL good question.....

Pathoma 1.7 speed (appetizer) + school lecture 2X speed (meat) + FA annotation + GT (desert) for each lecture = delicious! Only takes about 1.5 hrs, you see mat'l multiple times, and you study for boards. For Micro, substitute CMMRS for Pathoma and you're set!
