"Apollyon" is the destroyer.
In the Old Testament, the "Angel of Death", who flew over the houses taking the first born, was Apollyon.

The houses that put the sacrificial blood on the doorframes were "passed over" by the destroyer, and that's where "Passover" comes from.
'Apollyon' is Greek - also spelled Apolion, Appollyon, Apolyon - but all pronounced the same way.
In Hebrew, the destroyer is "Abaddon" (also spelled "Abbadon") - as in "sheol and abaddon" - "death and destruction"

As for me, it is symbolic in that not everything that comes from God is good, but turns out to be the right thing in the end.

The imagery that I find most compelling, though, is that of Michael - Micha-el - "Who is like God?"
In "Paradise Lost", Michael the Archangel strikes Lucifer on the right shoulder with his sword, rending him down his right side.
If you recall, in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the T800 strikes the T1000 with a pipe, splitting the T1000 down the right side, which is a nod to "Paradise Lost"
