I would agree. We haven't made any trips to Europe yet for that very reason. Plus, I really enjoy sitting in a pool with a swim-up bar! Also, you can't beat a 7 day all-inclusive trip for 2 for $2500.
I couldnt agree more.. Hopefully mrs fetus and my vacation sched can line up...

His wife is prego...BTW.. Due right at the beginning of residency..

Congratulations on UTSW. I interviewed there, and the PD and residents seemed very cool. Do you know where you're going to be living yet? I'm originally from the Mid-Cities area, between Dallas and Ft. Worth.

So is this proper use.. This morning I rooted with my wife.. or is it I rooted my wife this morning..

man this is real complicated for a lowly little fetus like myself..

The latter. You rooted your wife this morning (not sure if you did but that is how you say it 😉 ).

yeah...ouch is right. i HATE kobe bryant. not as a person, cuz i don't know him, just as a player. he's good, i respect his skills, but he's killin' me with the last second heroics that he does with such ease. arghhh....

anyhow, at least my bulls won. yeah kirk heinrich (go jayhawks!!!).

on to a different subject
has anyone ever been to puerta vallarta, the virgin islands or st. barts. i am looking for a nice all-inclusive vacation before residency starts. suggestions???? must be warm, beachy, all-inclusive. i do not want aruba or the bahamas.

also, do you need a passport to go to mexico. one of my best friends traveled to cancun several years ago (before 9.11) and didn't have a passport. is this still the case?

Haven't done Mexico in a few years but it also depends on whether you fly or drive in as to whether you need a passport. You can drive/walk over without one but not sure about the flying. I found the same for Canada recently. I needed a passport to fly to and fro but you can just drive in without one (or at least a few years ago you didn't need one). That said, I would definitely want a passport regardless when traveling further than Tiauana or Chihuahua just in case thinks get a bit "funny" over the border. Though probably won't happen in the touristy parts. Just me though.

Actually for Canada I flew there with a friend who didnt have a passport and he did not need a passport. I believe a drivers license and his birth cert were all he needed. I know for a fact he didnt have a passport. This was in 2003.

I'm from Euless ("Useless"), which is in Tarrant county right next to the airport. Without traffic, it's about 25 minutes from Parkland.

Kbrown are you a jayhawk? When did you graduate? I was '04.

😡 They told me I had to go home and get it after forgetting it. Damn Gainesville Airport. Got back with 15 mins before flight and they still let me on though. Fair enough I guess. Maybe the fetus' friend was quite a looker. Big lady at the door wasn't as impressed by me.

Today is May Day - a worldwide Communist holiday, but, ironically, from the Haymarket Riots of Chicago ~120 years ago. It actually started as a labor day of sorts. Regardless, I wore my red t-shirt (red being the color of labor) today.

My sister went to Waldorf (aka crunchy granola) school and they had May Day. They had to dance around the pole (ack! that sounds bad) and everything. Well, her 8th grade year i was doing a service project at her school and they were one "pole dancer 😛" short...so guess who got volunteered?

The real issue is for illegals but clearly if they only asked illegals to show up the INS would round them up. I wont go off on this topic...

You are kidding right? Communism blows..

I am 100% NOT kidding - it was "International Worker's Day". I remember as a kid seeing the military parades from Moscow on the evening news, and the goose-stepping troops. It's just that we have our Labor Day in September.

I know about may day. I guess my question is were you wearing red because of the workers day or because its a communist holiday.. If it is to support workers then Im 100% for it, if its for some communist show of support... 👎

Im guessing it was the latter so thats cool.🙂

Yeah, alright, I have nothing to say. Soo....

I take it back. I do have something to say. This whole medical school thing is taking away from my study time. I should study for, and take step 2 sometime in the near future but they always expect me at the hospital. 🙄

Lol.. wait until residency.. then you are always there. Everyday as I suffer through my sub-i i thank god I had the wisdom to do EM..

I take it your school doesn't allow an EM sub-I?? Mine doesn't, just curious why that is...very frustrating.

Interestingly, my school is now allowing a Peds EM sub-I. I went to the peds meeting just a couple weeks ago, as it is a secondary interest of mine and the course director mentioned it. It's at this amazing children's hospital too!!!

socute, is there a regular EM sub -I?
I'm curious why schools don't seem to embrace EM as a sub-I experience. i thought it was just my school and the primary care push, but maybe not...ideas?

NO it doesnt.. it is old fashioned so you can ONLY get your official sub-i out of the way with peds and IM. I think they want to let all of us know how awful the life of an IM resident is and how you can spend all day banging your head against a wall..

I literally spent about 5 hours today convincing my very competent patient to get a upper extremity doppler, an MRI and a pelvic Xray.. all very much needed... 5 hours.. i wish i was kidding.. so that led to a 14 hour day...Of course getting called by nurses and getting yelled at also happened.. oh well..

Honestly I think it is because medicine is still old school. to the powers that be there is nothing more than Surgery and Medicine.. everything else doesnt matter.

read on as i +pad+ it up.

To be clear I did an intramural EM sub-i it just doesnt count toward my requirement of a sub-i which can only be done in Peds and IM..

Socute are you sure that the Peds EM sub-i counts as a required 4th yr sub-i?

As far as I know there is no regular EM Sub-I. I think the reason there is a Peds EM sub-i is that Peds EM can actually be a subspecialty of peds if you approach it that way, whereas EM is not a subspecialty of IM (CHORUS: THANK GOODNESS!).

As I said, we have a pretty amazing children's hospital at my school, so I think they like to encourage us to spend as much time there as possible. Adding some of the interesting/more attractive subspecialties on as sub-i possibilities was probably an easy way to do so because they have the staff to do so. Due to geography, I get the feeling that the hospital is underutilized by 3rd and 4th years at my school - so adding more interesting sub-i options at that site may have also been a "recruiting" effort.

Those are my educated guesses. I am working closely with the director of the ED at a different hospital associated with my school this summer and I'm hoping that maybe he and I can push for some changes in making EM experiences more available to students.

Almost 100%, the sub-i director told us in as many words. He listed some of the possibilities: cardiology, oncology, pulmonology, emergency medicine, and a few others. I think I actually recall him listing other rotations that were available, but did not fulfill the sub-i requirement. I've got to go over to the dean's office this week, though, so I will check through the book she keeps out just to make sure.

lucky....i suffer alone...

You're not alone. The situation is similar at my school. We have to do 2 AIs, one from either medicine or peds and one from surgery. Options for the med/peds requirement included medicine, FP (wards), peds (wards), PICU, PM&R, and high-risk Ob clinic (I don't know why). When I was setting up my schedule, I chose medicine (the hardest / most time-consuming) for the presumed educational value, but by the time the end of the year rolled around, I was wishing I had picked PM&R (the easiest). In retrospect, I'm kind of glad I chose medicine because I think it went farther toward preparing me for intern year than any of the other options, but boy was I glad when the month was over!

Actually, it's the former (worker support) (I think you got your latter and former mixed up). Communism is an f'n dud (and the Communists in 50 years have ruined 6000 years of Chinese culture), and the broken hearts and broken lives left by the Polit Buros are tragedies.

I've always been a big union backer, and have always been irked by anti-union people that have no idea or experience in what they are talking about.

Who watches Lost?
WOW is all I can say and it's an hour later. My jaw still hasn't managed to fully close yet.

Waiting for that... My option is basically med wards or ped wards but you cant do peds unless you are applying for peds.. yucky..
